Victoria Racing Club (VRC) Chairman Michael Burn paid tribute to former VRC Chairman Andrew Ramsden who sadly passed away today.
“The Victoria Racing Club is deeply saddened by the sudden death of former VRC Chairman Andrew Ramsden,” said Mr Burn.
“Andrew made an enormous contribution at Flemington, as well as the broader racing industry. He was pivotal to the structural and administrative change in Victoria, which led to the formation of the body now known as Racing Victoria Limited (RVL). Upon his retirement from the VRC, he took up the reins as Chairman of the Australian Racing Board.
“Andrew was a man with an absolute passion for thoroughbred racing, particularly staying races. The VRC acknowledged his commitment to that by renaming the time honoured Duke of Norfolk Stakes, the Andrew Ramsden Stakes, which to his great joy, he won in 2011.
“Amongst his many triumphs over the years on the track, he won two Melbourne Cups with Gurner’s Lane and Brew. At this time he had interests in a number of horses that will participate in this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.
“Above all, Andrew Ramsden was a man of great integrity who had an unwavering commitment to the betterment of racing.
“He will be deeply missed by all his friends and colleagues; we mourn his loss. Our deepest sympathies are with Andrew’s wife, Anne, son, Michael, daughters, Jenny and Rebecca and the entire Ramsden family.”
