Quick Questions – Getting to know trainer Rebecca Waymouth

Trainer Rebecca Waymouth certainly has a racing pedigree with her family associated with many a talented horse. We caught up with her in our latest edition of QUICK QUESTIONS…

What is your first racing memory?

Going to the races with mum and my nan and watching mum ride.

Tell us a bit about your family racing background.

Both sides of the family are in racing. Dad’s side is Waymouth and mum’s side is Londregan so we have a good mix of flat and jumping racing.

Who is your favourite horse and why?

I’d have to say Serengetti Blaze, the first horse I trained. Nothing was straightforward with him and he taught me a lot. He won a stack of picnic races and a professional race along the way. He’s 28 years old now and is enjoying his retired life babysitting the younger horses we have coming through.

Who is the best horse you’ve been involved with?

Dad and mum use to pre-train for Mick Price and we were lucky enough to have Lankan Rupee as a pre-trainer.

And the best horse you have seen?

It’s a dead-heat between Winx and Black Caviar.

Who do you admire most in racing?

Anyone that keeps showing up and having a go, my grandfather always said to me “you’ll get more kicks in the guts than pats on the back in this game” and he was soo right, it’s a tough game!

What is one change/improvement you’d love to see in racing?

I think we could increase prize money for the lower grade races and restructure the benchmark system.

Which horse currently racing would you love to train?

Observer had a impressive spring and I can’t wait to see him in autumn.

What’s the funniest moment you’ve experienced in racing?

There’s no shortage of funny moments particularly over the summer period and attending the picnic races, I’ve seen it all from the weirdest dress ups, nudey runs after the last to a bucks party asking a jockey to smack him on the butt as hard as she could with the padded whip!

What is your favourite racing moment/biggest thrill?

I think my favourite racing moment is any winner with family; that is special. Rowan and I were born the same day three years apart and he won on our birthday at Traralgon on Shag On A Rock who I trained so that was a special day.

What is your favourite pastime outside of racing?

I really enjoy boxing.

What is your favourite T.V show?

I’m right into The Lincoln Lawyer at the moment.

Best concert you’ve seen?

It’s a dead-heat between Pink and Ed Sheeran. Two very different performances, Pink show is a production whereas Ed is just him and a guitar, both captivating just in different ways.

What slogan summarizes your outlook on life?

“Enjoy the highs, learn from the lows but most importantly have a laugh along the way.”

Favourite food?

Chocolate.

Favourite racecourse?

Cranbourne.

Something to do with equine myotherapy and equine biomechanics.
