We recently learned a bit about Victorian jockey Christine Puls – this time around we get her husband and fellow rider Dean Yendall to open up to us with our Quick Questions..
Do you come from a horse/racing family?
No.
Did you always want to be a jockey?
I didn’t like school and can’t recall really as I was only at the age of 14 when I left school to go and learn how to ride a horse really and start an apprenticeship. My Uncle rode and trained quarter horses.
What is your first racing memory?
A horse my Dad part owned racing against a motorcycle and greyhound.
Who is your favourite horse and why?
Our ponies Princess and Scout as I never had a horse or pony as a child.
Who is the best horse you’ve ridden?
I have ridden a few nice ones but I think Yankee Rose as I won my first Gr.1 on her and ran third on her in the W.S Cox Plate.
And the best horse you have seen?
Black Caviar, Makybe Diva and Winx are hard to separate.
Your favourite racing moment?
My first Gr.1, mainly because Christine and (daughter) Mia were both there to see it.
Is there a ride you wish you could do again?
No I don’t think so as it would just hurt my brain!
Which horse currently racing would you love to be riding?
Any sit and steer job that Jmac gets to ride!
Who do you admire most in racing?
Christine Puls – not only was she once named the Wakeful Lady In Racing, she does more than expected and I’d like to see her get rewarded more often than not.
What is one change/improvement you’d love to see in racing?
Not so much racing every day of the week I’m guessing we all would love to have more time to spend with our family and friends.
What is your favourite pastime outside of racing?
Spending time with the family camping out at the property with the ponies, playing golf and a little fishing.
What is your favourite T.V show/movie/book?
All the drug gang related series such as Breaking Bad, Narcos, MobLand, etc.
Best concert you’ve seen?
Pink.
What slogan summarizes your outlook on life?
Move it or lose it.
Favourite food?
Japanese.
Favourite racecourse?
Warrnambool.
If you had not been a jockey what would you have done?
Like to try and be a pro golfer.
