The Caulfield Guineas is a traditional Group 1 race for three year old horses, held annually at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne. This 1600 metre race is held under set weight conditions, as an important lead-up race to the Caulfield Cup. However, with prize money of $1,000,000 on offer, the Caulfield Guineas is an important and prestigious event in its own right.
The Caulfield Guineas has been around for a very long time, first being run way back in 1881. Traditionally run on the second Saturday of October, this event normally happens one week before the Caulfield Cup. This year’s edition of the race takes place on Saturday October 13, 2012.

The Caulfield Guineas is part of the Caulfield Carnival, which runs over consecutive Saturdays with the inclusion of a midweek event. The Caulfield Guineas kicks off the carnival, with the Yalumba Stakes and Toorak Handicap also run on the same day. The second day of the festival is held midweek on Wednesday, with the Group 1 Thousand Guineas for fillies being the highlight.
On the following weekend, the Caulfield Cup is run, in what is the major highlight of the entire carnival. However, the Caulfield Guineas also attracts a lot of attention, and is one of the classic races of the entire Spring racing carnival for three year old gallopers.
