A small but select field has been assembled for the Tancred Stakes (2400m) this Saturday at Rosehill.

2024 Tancred Stakes Runner Preview:
1. Buckaroo: He is flying this horse. Horrendous set up into the Ranvet last Saturday but he ran an absolute blinder in defeat I thought given the prep and race shape. He’s ready to win a Group l and IMO, it could easily come here.
2. Military Mission: Race shape was against him in the Ranvet last Saturday but I did like the way he finished his race off. He has looked like a horse wanting more ground, which he gets here, and I am convinced he is racing very well. Leading contender.
3. Ashrun: Ashrun is a beauty for Ciaron Maher and looks to be ticking along beautifully. He got his confidence up in the Pakenham Cup where he ate up the fast run 2500m and was quite impressive the way he put them away late in the piece. Not sure how he’ll go at WFA but to be fair, this is a very thin race, so for mine, off that win, he commands respect.
4. More Felons: More Felons can put his hand properly up for the Sydney Cup with a forward showing here. Didn’t disgrace himself in the Melbourne Cup but looks to have returned in super order with a Parramatta Cup win a few weeks back where he got better as the race went on and was impressive in winning. Natural improvement, 2400m…all points to him running well. Only knock is second up flat run, potentially, off a first up beauty.
5. Post Impressionist: I am a big fan of Post Impressionist and it’s hard to get away from him. He was an arrogant winner of the Manion Cup last Saturday, sitting back and giving them a beating, letting down with impressive change up speed. That race wasn’t a gutbuster and this isn’t a strong edition of the Tancred. Keen.
6. Gear Up: He won a barrier trial at Caulfield last time, and didn’t beat much. Different gravy here and can’t entertain him.
7. Kalapour: I thought he stayed on well enough in the Sky High last time but was simply no match for Lindermann. He’ll love the rise in trip and his best is certainly good enough to be dangerous at odds.
8. Bois D’Argent: He did more than enough first up in the Randwick City Stakes behind a solid stayer in Serpentine. He is one horse who I think could slide forward…I just don’t think he’s good enough and am surprised he is as short as he is.
9. Athabascan: Athabascan looks to be ticking along nicely towards the Sydney Cup. Did more than enough fresh in the Verry Elleegant before going to Sky High where the track was a touch shifty and while he struggled, he was simply not at the level of Lindermann. Not sure he wins, but a must for exotics now he gets a rise in trip.
10. Little Mix: They rode her cold in the Epona last Saturday and she was very good late. Ticking along really nicely is this mare…but she’s not up to these.
11. Tom Kitten: My patience has just about worn thin with him. I thought he had every chance last Saturday in the Guineas and was very one paced. He’ll love 2400m, gets J Kah…but I am not 100% convinced he is going well as he was in the Spring. Not for me.

They rode Military Mission forward last week in the Ranvet so I suspect they will again, as will they on Buckaroo I’d suggest. Bois D’Argent will be handy, as will stablemate Gear Up, while Post Impressionist maps perfect from the gate.
