ROSEHILL

RACE ONE

Accession defied the betting drift in the Countdown To Golden Slipper Sprint (1100 metres).

Starting the day at $2.50 equal top pick with Igniting, Accession blew out to $3.10 while the latter started a $2.60 favourite.

James McDonald found clear running on the Brazen Beau colt on straightening and he did the rest, sprinting sharply to swallow the leaders and put paid to the rest of the field in impressive fashion.

Avon River ($3.80) ran only fairly to finish second but was totally outpointed by the winner, while the leader Giselle Anne ($19) held third.

Igniting, which accounted for over half the market, could only finish fourth.

BETS: Accession $1,000 @ $3.10, $1,500 @ $2.90

BETS: Igniting $3,808 @ $2.70, $3,500 @ $2.70, $2,000 @ $2.60

BETS: Avon River $5,000 @ $4, $2,000 @ $4, $1,400 @ $4

RACE TWO

Favourite backers were left empty handed after Ljungberg went down as a short-priced favourite in the Doug Carroll Handicap (1300 metres).

Ljungberg was smashed in betting and started a hot $1.65 favourite. The Ron Quinton runner was nearly 30 times as popular as anything else.

Forced to sit three-wide the journey, the gelding battled on to finish second but couldn’t overhaul Vegadaze ($5.50) which led throughout of Tim Clark.

Above And Beyond, which raced outside the leader, battled on tenaciously to finish third at $11.

BETS: Vegadaze $900 @ $6, $800 @ $5.50, $500 @ $5.50, $800 @ $5

BETS: Ljungberg $4,000 @ $1.75, $8,000 @ $1.65

RACE THREE

Alassio did the right thing by her backers by scoring an impressive win in the Maurice Rolfe Handicap (1100 metres).

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained runner powered down the Rosehill straight over the concluding stages with James McDonald, sweeping to the lead inside the final stages to score comfortably over In Good Time ($6) and the early leader Witherspoon ($7).

Alassio jumped a $3 favourite after bottoming out $2.90 and held twice as much money as In Good Time, which was next best tried.

BETS: Alassio $3,000 @ $3.10, $1,500 @ $3, $1,000 @ $3 TWICE, $1,800 @ $2.90

RACE FOUR

It was a big upset for this week’s TAB Highway Handicap (1400 metres) with A Snip Of Cyndy scoring for jockey Shaun Guymer.

Jumping as a $34 chance, A Snip Of Cyndy was one of the least favoured runners in the race but showed a sensational turn of foot down the straight to mow down Embezzlement ($26) over the final stages, with race favourite Nicconita ($5.50 flashing home from the ear.

Andys A Star ($6), which was planted wide the trip, held the most money in front of Nicconita with Lacey Lynx Pack ($6) next best supported.

RACE FIVE

One of the best backed runners all day was Bon Amis.

The Jason Deamer-trained runner was $2.50-$2.30 in the JHB Syndications Sprint (1100 metres) and was easily the best backed runner in the race, commanding 66 percent of the total investment.

Kerrin McEvoy had to get everything out of the gelding as he struggled to get past Junglized ($11) but on the line, he had a narrow margin in his favour.

Paret ($3.40-$5) didn’t have a great deal of luck in winding up third.

BETS: Bon Amis $2,000 @ $2.50, $2,000 @ $2.40, $5,000 @ $2.30, $2,300 @ $2.30 MULTIPLE TIMES, $2,000 @ $2.30, $5,000 @ $2.20

BETS: Paret $2,000 @ $5

RACE SIX

Sweet Scandal did the right thing by favourite backers in leading throughout to win the Roger Hawke Handicap (1350 metres).

Hammered all week, Sweet Scandal was as low as $1.90 before getting out to $2.10 at the jump. It had started the day as a $2 favourite.

Rated perfectly by Robbie Dolan, Sweet Scandal booted clear midway down the straight and had too much in the tank for Schubert ($5.50-$4.80) and Mapmaker ($8-$12).

Such was the amount of money riding on the winner that she accounted for 62 percent of the market.

BETS: Sweet Scandal $2,728 @ $2.10, $2,000 @ $2.10 MULTIPLE TIMES, $2,000 @ $2 TWICE, $2,110 @ $1.95

RACE SEVEN

All Too Royal was the one punters wanted in the Eric ‘Mo’ Conlon Handicap (1200 metres).

Holding over 40 percent of the money, All Too Royal was supported from $2.70 on Wednesday to be $2.40-$2.20 today, however, it would eventually jump a $2.30 clear cut pick.

Jean Van Overmeire gave the Maher and Eustace runner a great run in front with the pair holding off Poetic Charmer ($3.50) which had good backing to beat it.

Kool Vinnie ($13) was popular once again and ran on strongly down the outside to grab third.

BETS: All Too Royal $2,308 @ $2.30, $1,740 @ $2.30, $1,500 @ $2.30, $1,300 @ $2.25, $1,000 @ $2.25, $1,500 @ $2.20, $1,150 @ $2.20, $1,000 @ $2.20

RACE EIGHT

A sensational betting move for So You Win paid dividends in the Bookmaker Recognition Race Day Trophy (2000 metres).

The Chris Waller runner opened up at $7 this morning and was a constant firmer throughout the day, eventually jumping at $3.80 which didn’t put it too far behind equal favs Asterius and Creedence at $3.40.

Jockey Brenton Avdulla didn’t have a great deal to do as the son of So You Think hit the front midway down the straight and powered away to an impressive win.

Asterius ran on fairly for second while Creedence ($3.10-$2.70-$3.40) only plodded in the run home for third.

BETS: So You Win $1,000 @ $4, $3,000 @ $3.80, $2,500 @ $3.80, $1,000 @ $3.80

RACE NINE

Harmattan gave favourite backers a few scares but ultimately landed the money in the Richard Hutt Handicap (1500 metres).

The James Cummings runner had been very well supported since Wednesday. At that point, $5 was available but the price kept shortening on Thursday and Friday. This morning it was as low as $2.60.

Jumping a $3.10 favourite, James McDonald pulled her out to make her run at the top of the straight and after appearing flat footed, picked herself up to nose out Zidane ($16-$9) which had been tried at a price.

Shock Alert ($61-$19) was massive odds this morning and ran right up to the eachway money that came for it, finishing third after racing outside the leader.

Harmattan was nearly twice as popular as Reflectivity ($7-$4.80) which finished fourth after looming up in the straight.

BETS: Harmattan $5,000 @ $3, $4,000 @ $3, $3,000 @ $3, $4,300 @ $2.80

FLEMINGTON

RACE ONE

Punters got off to the wrong start at headquarters when Viking Warrior went down as a heavily supported favourite in the VRC Member Duane Rogers Plate (1200 metres).

The David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained runner was $2 earlier in the week and smashed in to $1.70 on raceday, controlling 77 percent of the total investment.

Viking Warrior could only manage second though as he sat outside the leader and winner Free Of Debt ($8) for the majority of the trip.

The Chris Bieg runner, ridden by Jake Toreroek, was $12 in the early morning and led throughout and although a little wayward in the final 200 metres, had enough in the tank to knock off the hot pot.

Maozi ($7) filled the minor end of the prize.

Such was the popularity of Viking Warrior that it held more than 12 times the amount of money riding on the winner.

BETS: Free Of Debt $500 @ $10, $500 @ $8.50, $500 @ $8

BETS: Viking Warrior $6,000 @ $1.70, $5,000 @ $1.70, $3,500 @ $1.70, $25,000 @ $1.26 PLACE

RACE TWO

Punters were none from two after the opening two events at Flemington with Lycurgus letting down his backers.

The Danny O’Brien runner was $2.10 on Wednesday and was backed in to $1.80 today, however, the gelding got the blows late in betting and started $2.30 favourite.

Leading and getting a cheap run in front didn’t help because Lycurgus was gone at the 200 metre mark, with rank outsiders Khezerabad ($23) getting the money after dropping out of it at the top of the straight.

The Michael Dee-ridden runner knocked off One For Later ($17), while Pedro Ximenez ($7.50-$4.60) was the big market mover and ran third after sitting fourth in the run.

Lycurgus finished out of the placings after holding nearly 70 percent of the total investment.

Khezerabad was the least popular runner in the race and held less than one percent of the total hold.

BETS: Lycurgus $6,000 @ $2.30, $2,500 @ $2.20, $4,000 @ $2, $3,000 @ $2, $1,000 @ $1.90

RACE THREE

The VRC Member Michael Nicolson Handicap (1400 metres) was one of the best betting races of the day, with support for several runners.

In the end it was Rox The Castle ($3.60-$4.60) which defied a slight drift to lead throughout and win for Jack Martin over Sacred Theme ($23) and Battlecamp ($19).

English Gambler, $7.50 on Wednesday, went $5-$4.40 fav today and held more than three times the amount that the winner did.

Others to have had good backing included Abyssinian ($7), Weapon ($13) and Sabotage ($15).

BETS: Abyssinian $7,000 @ $7

RACE FOUR

Oceanex was a notable drifter in the Flemington Event Staff Handicap (2000 metres) but it didn’t matter as the Mick Price filly stormed home to score a strong win.

Ridden a treat by Lachie King who bided his time in the second half of the field, the pair made a sweeping run on the turn and overpowered the heavily tried Royal Performance ($4) in the shadows of the post.

Necessitas ($7) made it a popular trifecta. Of the others, Make Me Shiver ($4.40-$3.70) was the notable mover in betting and actually went around as favourite.

Royal Performance was the most popular runner though and accounted for nearly 30 percent of the money.

BETS: Royal Performance $3,000 @ $4, $10,000 @ $3.90

RACE FIVE

Tropezina ($8) handled the Flemington straight best to lead throughout in the Inglis Dash (1100 metres).

The Henry Dwyer-trained runner was kept safe in the market while most of the attention focused on Du Well ($5) and Thorondor ($3.10).

In a driving finish, Tropezina got over the line thanks to the urgings of Ben Melham to hold off Beerz With Clint ($6.50) and Prairie Fire ($19).

Du Well, which had been $3.90 favourite earlier in the day, got out to $5 and was the most popular runner while Thorondor jumped $3.10 favourite.

BETS: Du Well $36,400 @ $1.75 PLACE

RACE SIX

This one turned out to be one of the best betting races on the program.

There was a strong move for Set To Sparkle which was $6.50 in the morning, bottomed out at $3.80 before starting a $4.20 equal favourite with Mastering ($2.80-$4.20).

Mount Kilcoy ($7.50) was one of the most popular runners in terms of money held and was well tried eachway.

Mastering, although a drifter, still attracted a number of big bets while Kings Command had specking at the eachway quote too.

It was another runner that was tried at odds in Bad Wolf ($18-$12) which got the chocolates in a stirring finish over Heptagon ($9.50-$12-$9.50) and King’s Command ($14), which led.

BETS: Mastering $5,000 @ $4.40

BETS: Set To Sparkle $2,777 @ $4.60, $2,808 @ $3.80

RACE SEVEN

A long range betting move came off thanks to a gun ride by Jamie Kah in the Kensington Stakes (1000 metres).

Belwazi had been $61 on Wednesday and was specked in to $26 by the start of today. The five-year-old was then the subject of a further move which saw her jump a $16 chance.

Kah positioned the mare perfectly in the run and Belwazi hit the front at the 300 metre mark, before holding off the two fancied runners in Glenall ($$4-$3.20) and Champagne Cuddles ($2-$3.30).

Champagne Cuddles was the most popular runner even though she was a drifter in betting, with TAB traders preparing to take a stand against her. Such was the drift that she lost favouritism to Glenall.

BETS: Belwazi $300 e/w @ $19/$4.20, $300 @ $16, $200 @ $16

BETS: Glenall $17,500 @ $3.20

BETS: Champagne Cuddles $4,378 @ $3.30

RACE EIGHT

Laure Me In landed some serious bets in winning the eighth event on the card at Flemington.

One of the better supported runners on the day, Laure Me In held five times as much as Five Kingdom, which was the best tried to beat it.

Coming with a sweeping run down the straight, the Tony McEvoy runner won easily over the fast-finishing The Mighty Jrod ($151) and Amadeus ($26), with the placegetters adding plenty of value in the exotics.

Five Kingdom and Kentucky Breeze ($10-$5.50) began equal second picks while Black Sail ($11) had good eachway support.

The tale of the tape though sat with the winner which was responsible for over half the total investment.

BETS: Laure Me In $10,000 @ $2.40, $6,000 @ $2.30, $5,000 @ $2.30, $3,000 @ $2.30 MULTIPLE TIMES

RACE NINE

Just Hifalutin delivered a hammer blow for TAB in the final event – the Victorian Owner Gold Card Handicap (1200 metres).

The Enver Jusufovic-trained runner was the most popular horse in terms of money taken and had been backed ever since the market opened on Wednesday. At that stage, $12 was available but today she was $5-$7.50.

Liam Riordan timed his run perfectly on the mare as the pair flew home to nail roughie Well Sprung ($81) right on the line. Favourite Langhro ($4.40), which led, was close up in third.

The win by Just Hifalutin represented a huge loss for TAB.

BETS: Just Hifalutin $2,000 @ $7.50, $1,500 e/w @ $7.50/$2.40, $1,000 @ $7
