A competitive bunch of three year old colts and geldings will face the starter for this Saturday’s Group 3 C. S. Hayes Stakes. The market has local hope The Quarterback ($4.60) as the main danger to interstate visitor and favourite Hucklebuck ($3.60) With most of the field resuming or just have resumed from a spell, it can be a hard race for punters to gauge with the last favourite to win this race being Innovation Girl in 2003 (when run as the Debonair Stakes).

1. POLANSKI – D Yendall (9) 57.5kgs

The winner of last year’s VRC Derby, his fourth win from only nine starts, the Robbie Laing trained runner resumes here off a fourteen week spell. He looked in good order when running third of six in a Cranbourne Trial (800m) just over a week ago, a heat that included sprinters the calibre of Lankan Rupee, Unpretentious and Bel Sprinter. Has a 1400m to his name as a 2yo and the trial looked good. Would prefer to wait for him to have this run but at the same time, a forward showing would not surprise.

Odds: $8.50

2. CRITERION – N Rawiller (11) 57.5kgs

Winner of the G2 Todman Stakes as a 2yo last season, the David Payne trained galloper took a few runs when returning as a 3yo to hit form. When he did, he ran second in both the G2 Stan Fox (1500m) and G1 Champion Stakes (2000m) before rounding out his spring prep by finishing fourth in the VRC Derby (2500m) behind Polanski. The Sebring colt has had two trials since early January, with the latest behind a nose second to stable-mate Centennial Park. Will get back from his wide gate and whilst expecting a better performance than first up last time, would think he’ll be better again for the run and looking for or beyond, a mile.

Odds: $21.00

3. SURGE AHEAD – C Symons (3) 56.5kgs

The well bred son of Danehill Dancer (half to Smart Missile, Kiss From A Rose) has won three of his four starts including his most recent outing, the Listed Connoisseur (1800m) on VRC Oaks Day. Will take up a forward position from his draw but first up over 1400m, just might not have the zip of some of his competitors here. He’ll be better again after this run and contesting something longer.

Odds: $51.00

4. HUCKLEBUCK – D Tourneur 55.5kgs

Highly promising gelding from Phillip Stokes’ Adelaide stables, the son of Elvstroem won the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield during the spring in good style before running home well in the G3 Carbine Club Stakes, finishing a long neck to Paximadia who had controlled the race from the front. He was spelled after the Carbine Club and returned to racing a fortnight ago in a Morphettville Open 3yo race (1200m). Under 59.5kgs, he did what he had to do in registering a ¾ length win over his five rivals. Drawn to get the ideal run here and should prove hard to beat.

Odds: $3.70

5. SAN DIEGO – S Arnold (2) 55.5kgs

Darley’s Excel And Excel colt returns to racing after failing to see out the 2500m of the VRC Derby. His form in the lead up to the Derby was solid though and included a head second to Polanski in the G3 Norman Robinson when the 7/2 favourite. First up last prep he ran home well (under 58.5kgs) to claim third behind subsequent Caulfield Guineas winner Long John in the Listed Henry Buck (1400m). He’ll get back from the inside gate but will warm to his task late and at $13.00, is a good choice for any multiples.

Odds: $15.00

6. THE QUARTERBACK – M Allen (8)

Robbie Griffith’s 4yo recorded two wins back in October and whilst they were only in a Maiden and a Sale BM 70, they were impressive enough for Griffiths to know that better races were within his reach and he was spelled. His first run back from that break, last fortnight’s G3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield, suggests he is certainly on track for good things judging by his fast-finishing third, 1 ¾ lengths behind Bull Point.  The Street Boss gelding was last with 300m to go before easing off heels and extending well late. Can only be better for that run and Bull Point rates highly.

Odds: $4.50

7. PRINCE HARADA – C Williams (12)

He returned from a sixteen week spell as the 7/4 favourite in the G3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) a fortnight ago. The Tony Vasil trained runner tracked Bull Point, the eventual winner, into the straight and had his chance to do better than his 1 ¾ length fourth. Won his first two races – both on slow tracks – and whilst he has performed well in good races since, just quite hasn’t yet lived up to the expectations put on him early in his career. Fitter and did give the impression a longer journey will suit but drawing the widest gate not ideal.

Odds: $6.00

8. TERONADO – C Newitt (6) 54kgs

Gold Coast trainer Bruce Hill has been clocking up the miles with his son of Testa Rossa. After a fast-finishing effort in the G3 Ming Dynasty (1400m) behind Aussies Love Sport, he was spelled and returned to racing a fortnight ago in a BM 74 (1200m) at Rosehill. He had to carry 59kgs and in a small field of only four, which wasn’t a truly run race, he finished third, 3.2 lengths behind the winner Woodbine. Lighter weight and a genuine tempo are both advantages for him here and he is capable of running a race better than his current $21 would suggest.

Odds: $21.00

9. EPIC SAGA – D Lane (7) 54kgs

Despite not being able to record a win, the Real Saga gelding put together a very strong campaign last spring and recorded places in the Listed Uci Stakes (2nd) and G3 Norman Robinson (3rd), behind Polanski and San Diego. He was spelled after failing in the VRC Derby and returns here having had no public trials. Showed potential over middle distances last time in and would think he’ll be better off for having his run and be better suited at and over a mile.

Odds: $51.00

10. MONKSTONE – D Oliver (5) 54kgs

Made a good impression in his first two starts, both 2yo Open class races at Caulfield but after failing when taking on the better grade of horse in the Listed Henry Bucks at his third start, the son of Fastnet Rock was spelled. He returned in the G3 Manfred Stakes a fortnight ago but steadily drifted in betting from when markets first opened and started a 14/1 chance. The Peter Moody runner was never in the hunt and finished last, almost eight lengths from winner Bull Point. He has to make a huge form reversal in the space of a fortnight to be winning here.

Odds: $12.00

11. KUSHADASI – P Gatt (10)

Adelaide’s Richard Jolly trains this Choisir gelding who won two of his first three starts last year before a spell of eighteen weeks. He returned a fortnight ago by running second to Hucklebuck in a 3yo Open class race over 1200m, beaten ¾ of a length. Jolly is never far from the mark when he brings is horses across to Victoria and worth noting two things here – Gatt has made the trip with the horse and has ridden him every start and trial he has had, and that after opening up at $21.00, he was quickly wound into $13.00. Creates a bit of interest.

Odds: $13.00

12. WORTH A RANSOM – G Boss (13)

Resumed in the G3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) as a 20/1 shot but ran a much bolder race then his pride would have suggested. The Red Ransom gelding from Mick Price’s yard led the field and gave plenty in the straight with Bull Point only getting the better of him inside the final 100m. Well beaten his only other attempt over 1400m but that was at the end of his initial prep. Likely to cross from his wide gate but the final furlong will test.

Odds: $15.00

13. MAHICAN – V Duric (2)

The well bred More Than Ready gelding cracked his maiden status, at start number four, with a comprehensive four length win in a Sale Maiden three weeks ago, his first run back from a spell. Will be able to take up a handy position here from an inside draw but will find this test much tougher than his last start.

Odds: $26.00

RACE OVERVIEW

Hucklebuck and The Quarterback stand out here, with a leaning toward The Quarterback. Hucklebuck has drawn ideally in gate one for the 1400m at Flemington and will only need a touch of luck at the top of the straight to be winning here. The replays of The Quarterback’s first up run though don’t lie and fancy he’ll be the one steaming home. 1400m at Flemington looks ideal and the patience shown by Griffiths with this horse last year, looks set to pay dividends. Criterion, San Diego, Teronado and Kushadasi are the ones to watch for steaming home.

  1. THE QUARTERBACK
  2. HUCKLEBUCK
  3. TERONADO
  4. SAN DIEGO
