1. PIERRO
The champion 2yo returns as a three year old and will be looking to make it seven wins, from seven starts. He was bomb-proof as a 2yo winning races from a 1000m to 1600m including the 2yo Triple Crown. He has been lumped with 60kg first up here and, strangely for a Waterhouse representative, hasn’t been put through a barrier trial for his return.
Odds: $2.10
2. ALL TOO HARD
Returned to racing a fortnight ago where he finished third (beaten 2.8 lengths) as 10/9 favourite behind smart filly Snitzerland. He had to give the filly 3kg and a start in that race and fancy the conditions of that race weren’t in his favourite. With that run now under his belt and the distance increased to 1200m, we should see a better effort today.
Odds: $2.70
3. ASHOKAN
Won the Group 3 Skyline Stakes at his second career start followed by a twelfth of sixteen in the Golden Slipper (beaten 4.6) and a sixth of seven in the Sire’s Produce before being spelled. The son of More than Ready has had two barrier trials in preparation for his return to racing, performing well in both with today’s rider Glynn Schofield putting him through his paces. From a good draw, he should be prominent but whether he has improved enough over the break to hold of the top two remains to be seen.
Odds: $21.00
4. EPAULETTE
Won the Black Opal Stakes and ran Pierro to a nose in the Group 2 Todman Stakes before having little luck and finishing down the track in the Golden Slipper. Returns to racing here with the benefit of a winning barrier trial under his belt and a repeat performance of the Todmas Stakes run, would make him a contender here.
Odds: $6.50
5. YOUR SONG
The first of two Anthony Cummings’ runners who has won two races from three starts thus far. Produce late in the 2yo old season, Cummings has given the son of Fastnet Rock plenty of time and it’s paid dividends with a win at Warwick Farm and Rosehill both in Open company. A different kettle of fish here today but may be way that could blossom as 3yo.
Odds: $17.00
6. NINTH LEGION
Won on debut at Canterbury and backed that immediately with a win in Open Company at Warwick Farm in June before Cummings took him north for a tilt at the Group 1 TJ Smith. He finished fifth (beaten 2.6) and returned to racing a fortnight ago with a fourth of six (beaten 3.3) behind Snitzerland. From the outside draw, picture him giving most of these a start as they turn and will have the job ahead of him to run them down.
Odds: $21.00
OVERVIEW
Pierro and Ashokan to lead the way in running from Epaulette and Your Song. Pierro has been nominated for some of the big races later in the spring so just how wound up will Waterhouse have him here for his first run back – under the steady of 60kg will be interesting to see. He opened up $2.30 Sportsbet and as of Thursday (pm) had tightened into $2.20. All Too Hard will improve here and has been rock solid at $2.50. He’ll be stalking the leaders as they turn and with the benefit of a run this campaign, presents a big danger. Epaulette should get the run of the race and was out-bobbed by Pierro in the Todman at level weights. He gets 2.5kg off that horse today and at $7.00 is worth a saver.
