1. EAGLE FALLS
The 7yo’s last two wins have come at this course and were the 2011 Oakleigh Plate and more recently the Group Three Rubiton Stakes. His first up run over a slick Moonee Valley 1000m, was what most expected under the impost of 60kg. He has been allotted the same weight here today but being second up and the extra 200m will help – but any wet weather will not.
2. LAUNAY
Lonhro gelding who hasn’t been seen at the races since finishing fourth in the Group 3 Sandown Stakes back in November of last year.Would expect that he’ll need this run first up.
3. PREVAILING
Another returning from a spell after finishing his last campaign with three successive wins, all at a distance greater than 2000m.He’s another that will need this run possibly a few more before we start to see the best of him.
4. FREERETURN
The Rubiton gelding is in good form and two starts back ran second to Golden Archer (good last week) and then went one better next start, finishing hard to score by a length at Moonee Valley over 1000m.He’s drawn the inside and whilst he has gotten back in the field at the above two starts, can be ridden closer and may have to be from fence.
5. MOMENT OF CHANGE
Burst onto the scene this time last year with two emphatic wins before being spelled.Returned to compete in leading 3yo races in Sydney and registered a third in the Royal Sovereign and Hobartville Stakes before returning home to Melbourne and winning an Open Handicap under 60kg by two.Has well above average ability this bloke and is the early favourite at $2.05.
6. BLISS STREET
Enjoyed a very successful Spring last year but form was not as strong in her five start Autumn campaign. She’s yet to miss a place in three first up runs (1 win and 2 thirds) but her form suggests that she does produce her better efforts over a bit further.
7. BY THE WAY
Hasn’t raced since finishing fourth over 1400m in a Open Class event here at Caulfield in February. He’ll get back from his wider draw and should be doing best work last but hard to see him figuring here.
8. INSTINCTION
4yo by Exceed and Excel who was produced first up last campaign to win the Listed Zedative Stakes carrying 57.5kg. He backed that up with a further Listed win in the C S Hayes Stakes before failing in the Group 1 Australian Guineas and being spelled.Trainer and Jockey combination is a formidable one and from a good draw, would think he could be one of the better chances but all is form is on Good surfaces so the forecast of wet weather and track conditions will not please connections.
9. SIERRA NEVADA
A former New Zealander who has since crossing the Tasman in 2011, has only had the one start in Australia – a second first up over 1500m in a Restricted 78 event at Sandown. Later.
OVERVIEW
Peter Moody’s Moment of Change really does seem to justify his odds of nearer enough to even money. From six, Nolen should be able to keep him out of trouble early and position him right on the speed as they turn for home. From there, it is hard to see any of today’s opponents being able to run him down. Freereturn ($4.80) and Instinction ($8.60) for the placings.
