Very rarely would a jockey travel across the ditch for just one ride, especially if it was no chance. Kiwi Opie Bosson will again take the Steer on Mongolianconqueror, his only ride of the day in the 7th event, the Group 1 Australian Derby over 2400m.
Bosson will be hoping for an improvement from the star New-Zealand 3-year-old, his 8th placing in the Rosehill Guineas just the 3rd time the gelding in the Mongolian Khan colours has missed a place in his 9-start career.
The group 1 runner up finished 3.2L off winner D’argento back on March 24, making ground from deep in the field in his Australian debut. The Ocean Park gelding gets out to his favourable distance of 2400 after a very strong performance in the Group 1 NZ Derby to miss by just 0.1L.
Mongolianconqueror will be aided by one of the best ever in Bosson, a 45-time Group 1 winner who is no stranger to tracks down under, in fact taking rides at Doomben, Eagle Farm, Flemington, Gold Coast, Ipswich and Rosehill in the last 12 months.
