The night racing season at Moonee Valley kicks off on Friday night, where it is Moir Stakes Night, the 1000m Group l potentially being a chance for runners to force Everest slot holders to stand up and take notice. The rail is our four metres, and in two meetings at the track to start the season, it has played quite fairly.
Down below is a speed map, runner preview and $100 betting strategy for the 2021 Moir Stakes.
2021 Moir Stakes Speed Map
With the low weight, Profiteer looks the likely leader given what he showed as a juvenile. Miss Albania was tardy away but can slide forward as well, along with Portland Sky. Wild Ruler should lob into a lovely spot from the gate, likewise Shaquero. September Run could get buried back on the fence and be in a nasty spot.

2021 Moir Stakes Runner Preview
1. Trekking: He’s just reliable at this level at this track. Close up in this race a couple of times, close up in the Manikato, William Reid…yet to win here, but he enjoys it. He won’t be far away from the gate and will be strong at the end off a good speed. He’s one of the hardest to beat.
Odds: $12.00
2. Wild Runer: Handed up to Nature Strip in the Concorde and that was the end of the race. No match for the gun sprinter but still a good effort in second. He should just about get run of the race stuff and from there, he’ll get his chance. I think he is the one they have to beat.
Odds: $7.50
3. The Inferno: Win here and he’s all but secured an Everest slot. Bit of dominance about his win in the McEwen at this track/distance last time. My concern is how strong is that form compared to above and Nature Strip? That’s the knock, but everything else is a tick. He’s a winning threat for sure.
Odds: $5.00
4. Portland Sky: I thought he had every chance in the McEwen. Race was set up ideally from him and he failed to finish it off when second to The Inferno. Unless there is an on speed bias, I can’t see him turning the tables on that horse here, so happy to look at others.
Odds: $11.00
5. September Run: I think she has come back really well. No chance from where she was fresh in the McEwen but her finale was outstanding. Gate one is the big concern. Has no early speed and likely to get buried on the fence, so she will need luck. But, if she gets it, she can win.
Odds: $9.00
6. Swats That: Somewhat of a bridesmaid and is 3-0 against September Run when they have clashed. She’s a good, honest mare that has run well at the Valley previously. She will be honest, but doubt she’s good enough to win, especially from a tricky gate.
Odds: $18.00
7. Brooklyn Hustle: Lovely ride from Lane saw her win the Carlyon fresh and has been kept on ice with this race in mind. I’d say she lacks the class of some of these, but she’s proven here, has tactical speed and McDougall has a very good strike rate when he combines with Joe Pride runners. Wouldn’t be shocked if she won.
Odds: $13.00
8. Ballistic Lover: Chris Waller is a trainer of habit. He follows his tried and proven formulas and that is what he is doing with this guy. The Autumn Sun won a 1500m lead up into winning the Golden Rose and that is what Giannis is trying to do. Strong win in the Dulcify beating Tiger Of Malay and loved the way he kept finding when required. If he is to threaten, he wants this to be a truly run 1500m.
Odds: $10.00
9: Miss Albania: Talented mare that blew the start in the Carlyon and that sealed her fate, but I didn’t think she was too bad in defeat behind Ballistic Lover. That said, I don’t think she is up to this grade at this stage of her career.
Odds: $34.00
10: Shaquero: This is a throw at the stumps to get a Group l win for a colt and his CV for stud. He’s already a Group lll winner so his future at stud is sealed, but a Group l win will increase his value towards $10 Million+. He will get a cheap run from the gate and at his best, he’s in with a shot, but I do have others ahead of him.
Odds: $27.00
11. Profiteer: Sustained speed from the front gets him home? Potentially. He’s a smart three year old that resumes. Similar to Shaquero. This prep is all about a Group l win and IMO he only has two legitimate chances to do that. Here and the Coolmore Stud. So I’m expecting handle bars down at the start, jump, run, catch me if you can. Last 100m will be the test.
Odds: $3.80
2021 Moir Stakes $100 Betting Strategy:
This is a very tricky race with a host of winning chances. I have it down to five so I will have $20 Win (Top Tote/Fluc) on each of those, those being Trekking, Wild Ruler, The Inferno, September Run and Brooklyn Hustle.
Group l Strategy Outlay: $500
Group l Strategy Return: $310
