There was class galore at the set of barrier trials run and won at Rosehill Gardens on Tuesday. Here is our horses to watch from the session:
Flemington- Friday, February 6:
Heat One- Deep Field (1st):
Couple of weeks ago he was retired according to some sources, but thankfully he isn’t, because he looked awesome in winning this jump out, sitting on speed before being given a little niggle by Dwayne Dunn and the colt accelerated beautifully to win and win comfortably. He is going to give the Group l sprints a major shake.
Heat Two- Nozomi (1st):
The Derby placegetter looks to have come back in fantastic order judging by how he went here, showing good speed to lead, and then quicken nicely when asked by Dwayne Dunn to race away and score a most impressive win. From the Derby, he is clearly the horse who has improved most from then to now. Definitely the horse I want to be on come the Sydney Autumn and the three year old Classics.
Heat Three- Chautaqua (1st):
Hard not to be impressed by the effort of this star sprinter here, sitting on speed most of the way before drawing clear late and winning under a good hold from Dwayne Dunn. He didn’t beat home pluggers either, with the second horse being Wandjina, a Caulfield Guineas placegetter and was only two lengths away in the Cox Plate. Chautaqua went so close to Group l glory in the Spring, but I think he win a major this Autumn, perhaps more.
Heat Six- Magicool (1st):
This Mark Kavanagh three year old wasn’t far away from them in the Derby, and he has also come back in good order after a slick jump out win here, where he jumped well, sat on speed, railed up and broke clear to win under no real pressure from the rider. He is probably just a length or two off being a serious Derby contender, but he will be more than competitive.
Heat Seven- Suavito (3rd):
The Matriarch winner looks to be in for a great prep judging by how she went here. She sat in the box seat behind the two leaders and stayed there throughout, but looked very good in the straight under Ollie, gliding home and going to the post under a good hold. She won’t be far away in the mares Group l’s and could even maybe win one.
Heat Ten- Melag Verra (1st):
This Team Freedman runner looked pretty impressive in winning here, showing good speed to lead, kick clear on the turn and pretty ran down the straight under a good hold, in fact easing up with 50m to go yet still won by a length, and ran good time compared to others that morning. Keen to see this horse on raceday.
