The star quality might not have been on display, but there were some pretty solid performances at the Caulfield jump outs on February 24. So who caught our eye? Find out who down below.
Caulfield- Tuesday, February 24: Weather Fine, Track Soft 5.
Heat One- Jack’s Choice (2nd):
Unraced Reset filly for John Salanatri who looked pretty sharp here. She jumped well from the gates to lead, and appeared to travel very comfortably throughout, eventually running second under a really good hold. Where ever she debuts, she’ll be more than competitive, because there looks to be good ability here.
Heat Two- True Connection (4th):
This filly is unraced by Bernadini for Robert Smerdon. She jumped well to sit on speed, and looked to travel sweetly, going about her business in impressive fashion. She eventually ran fourth but was under no pressure from the rider, whereas the three that beat her home were under riding. Bred to be handy, so it’ll be interesting to see where and when she debuts.
Heat Three- Quayside (1st) and Reframe (2nd):
This pair controlled the four horse heat from the front, both travelling sweetly with Quayside just getting the win, but both were under good holds from their hoops. The other pair, Kenjorwood and Rodway, are stayers, and were under pressure late, so it might not look strong, but they did run good time.
Heat Four- American Maid (1st):
Best of the morning by a decent margin. Trained by Andrew Noblet and has only had the one career start, back in August last year when running third. She jumped brilliantly from the gates in this trial, leading quite comfortably and appeared to be going very easily throughout, going to the line under a big grip and winning narrowly, but did run the second quickest time of the morning. Very impressive trial and I’ll be keen to back her first up.
