A capacity field has been assembled for the Bunbury Cup (2019m) this Saturday in what looks a ripping contest on paper.
Down below is a speed map, runner preview and $100 betting strategy for the 2025 Bunbury Cup.
2025 Bunbury Cup Runner Preview:
1. Alaskan God: Alaskan God has class on his side and that will carry him a long way. He ran in the Detonator and given the race shape, he was never really a factor, but did close off quite well late in the piece without threatening. Class will take him a fair way.
2. Currimundi: Didn’t do a bad job in the Detonator against the race shape. The rise in trip I like…but I just feel his best chance would be if the rain comes. It’s not coming.
3. Antique Miss: Had things on an absolute platter in the Detonator and duly saluted. Won’t get it as easy this time around…she’s flying and can win, but does seem on the short side.
4. Blazing Away: Sneaky flying I think this guy. Luckless in the Detonator. If this was 2200m+, would declare him an each way moral. Just prefer to watch.
5. Red Sun Sensation: Red Sun Sensation will jump on the speed and give his all, which was the case two weeks ago in the Detonator and tried hard but couldn’t quite see it through when a narrow second to Antique Miss. Like him up in trip and with a more patient steer, I think he’ll be more effective.
6. Captain Pluto: Captain Pluto has won up to 2200m so rising to 2000m here looks ideal off the back of a placing last Saturday at Ascot over the mile where he got back off the moderate speed so the race shape wasn’t to his liking but he did close off strongly. Up to 2000m, hard fit, more genuine tempo, he’s the one to beat.
7. Demolish: Ridden with a sit in the Detonator and against the race shape, was good late. Lands on speed with a positive ride and is a knockout hope.
8. Fat Roy Slim: Looked in need of the run in the Detonator and suspect he needs more racing.
9. Fear The Wind: Plain in the Detonator and can’t see him improving enough.
10. Flower In The Wind: She’ll stay all day. Trip is no issue. Class is the issue.
11. I Love Your Smile: On the seven day back up after a good effort last Saturday without much luck at Ascot. Not sure she wins, but can pinch first four.
12. Magic Whistle: Strong all the way winner last Saturday in the race mentioned above. But, this is much harder. Pass.
13. Own The Queen: Had every possible in the Detonator when leading and couldn’t see it through. That was her chance. Not here.
14. Sensessional: Nice horse but 2000m has to be a query. Comes through the Detonator when off speed and closed well enough in defeat. He’s way too short for mine.
15. Sowar: Outclassed in the Detonator and will be outclassed here.
16. Weeraechoux: Was good late behind Magic Whistle. Hard to beat in a benchmark race. Not here.
17. Brave Commander (First Emergency): Not up to these.

There doesn’t seem to be much front end pressure here. Demolish and Magic Whistle could slide across from out wide maybe? Red Sun Sensation should land in a good spot from the inside gate. Antique Miss could be given a dig in the ribs and be handy.
