Albury
$30 Win Terminal R1 @ $4.8 (BetEasy)
$70 Win California Concord R5 @ $3.3 (BetEasy)
Albury Overview:
I think there’s a bit of value in the first. The short odds on offer for Sky Call seems very risky given she was given absolutely every chance last time at Benalla and still couldn’t get the job done. Terminal debuted at Wagga and was unlucky not to finish closer when second in a race where the form has been franked. Glyn takes over, soft gate, she looks value. California Concord looks really hard to beat in the Guineas. Had good specking when resuming at the Rosehill midweeks and was one of the better runs of the meeting when a closing second to Sheriff, who ran well in a feature sprint at Kembla Grange, so the form reads well back to his own age, gate one and a little bit of juice in the track will be no issue. Think he’s a great bet.
Terang
$100 Win Killarney Kid R2 @ $1.7 (Sportsbet)
Terang Overview:
No prizes for finding a $1.70 pop…but really, he should be $1.10. Getting Leggie is a progressive jumper, but the flat speed of Killarney Kid should see him get home pretty comfortably en route to potentially Oakbank then Warrnambool. Resumed in the Stony Creek Cup a tick under two weeks ago and gee wasn’t he an eye catcher, finishing off quite strongly to run fifth to Prince Ziggy. He’s a high class jumper and a borderline Stakes class horse on the flat. The Payne/Pateman combo has been lethal for a number of years and they should continue their winning ways here.
Moonee Valley
$20 Yulong January R1 @ $7 (BetEasy)
$20 Win Cheer Leader R2 @ $3.7 (Sportsbet)
$5 Win/$25 Place Oberland R5 @ $15/$4.2 (Sportsbet)
$30 Win Naantali R8 @ $5 (BetEasy)
Moonee Valley Overview:
The Maher/Eustace stable trains Yulong January, who hasn’t really set the world on fire in two runs back from a break, the latest in the Canberra Guineas when a disappointing sixth to Final Award. Think he’ll lead for fun here from gate one and rail true, dry track, I think on speed will be no disadvantage. Cheer Leader is a Team Snowden trained filly who has placed in two career outings from as many starts, the latest being down the Flemington straight when wandering about under pressure and losing second on protest behind Mockery. Draws gate one, so she’ll have the rail to follow and straighten her up, hopefully, in what does look a competitive race. Really keen to see what Oberland does here. Former Darren Weir galloper that is now with Jarrod McLean and he has shown good sprinting ability throughout his career. 955m not really his pet trip but gee he looked sharp in a recent Camperdown jumpout when closing off under little pressure. He’ll get back and launch late off a likely brutal early speed. The Maher/Eustace stable trains Naantali, who comes through the Matron at Flemington where she seemingly had every chance of beating Spanish Reef but the Kenny Keys mare packed plenty when challenged and held off Naantali. Naantali does like racing at the Valley and for mine, I’d like to see her ridden on speed and rolling, like Spanish Reef.
