The rain wreaked havoc at Caulfield on Saturday but it didn’t stop what ended up being a ripping edition of the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m), which was taken out by Callsign Mav in a driving finish.

1: Callsign Mav: Enough people around to suggest that the ‘Good Bloke Card’ is well and truly allowed for Jamie Mott winning his maiden Group l. Him and his strength to lift this horse late in a driving go was the difference between winning and losing. He’s a strong 1400/1600m horse so it was no shock to see him bounce back.

2: I Am Superman: Back, wide with cover, got wider in the straight and launched late to just miss out on picking up Callsign Mav. A remarkable effort really given he is a pure dry tracker so the fact he ran so well is a big tick.

3: Tuvalu: Hunted forward, dragged up by Buffalo River, loomed to win and fought on very hard, just getting nabbed late by the race fit Callsign Mav. That should be a lovely first up clean out in readiness for the Toorak.

4: Laws Of Indices: Gee he was bolting behind the speed. Johnny Allen asked for an effort but the wheels were seemingly spinning in the ground. Had his chance overall, but the first up run was a beauty.

5: Buffalo River: Did plenty of work to lead and gave a strong kick on the turn, and in the straight, but he couldn’t quite finish the job, which has been the story of his life. Flattered perhaps as well given the track conditions.

6: Dalasan: His run was an a beauty. Got tight between runners but picked up and was pretty good late in the piece. That’s him though. Just a length or two off the top level.

7: Bankers Choice: Snagged back to near last in the run and came the widest on the turn. Flat footed when asked but the last little bit, he found the line nicely. The thought pre race was that he’d be the flashing light run for the Toorak. It wasn’t quite a flashing light run, but a run that indicates that he’s on target.

8: Red Can Man: He was given a peach ride by Nolen and on the turn, he looked the winner when presented, but 1400m at this level on bottomless ground just found him out and he paddled late. But, given his SP, the run was very good.

9: Aysar: He had a good run in transit near the eventual winner. In restricted room but he had his chance late and just whacked away. The run was still a pass mark for him.

10: Just Folk: He had an economical run in transit on the fence off the good speed. That wasn’t the best ground to be, but that said, he was still plain late in conditions he usually laps up. Perhaps the weight got to him?

11: Chaillot: As she has done since day one, she got back to last, showing little gate speed. Moor was forced to make his run nearer the inside, which was not ideal, and she just plodded late.

12: Hilal: Wide throughout and seemingly struggled in the conditions. Surprised they let him go around given his historical form suggests he hates wet ground. Jury is well and truly out.

13: Showmanship: Got into a nasty spot after just a fair beginning. Olly decided to stay towards the inside and it just didn’t eventuate for him. I’d be very much forgiving of his effort because he had excuses.

14: Graceful Girl: Tardy away, again, and that sealed her fate, plus she seemingly lost the plot in the conditions. Forgive and forget she went around.
