The Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield will have some added importance with Group 1 contests approaching.

The Ciaron Maher stable is considering options for Light Infantry Man who is expected to step out at Caulfield.

The Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) on Saturday is favoured to be Light Infantry Man’s next assignment after a first-up win over 1600m at Caulfield last month.

Following Saturday’s outing, Light Infantry Man has the option of going to the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington or the Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) at Rosehill.

Both races are set to be run on March 28, while Light Infantry Man was successful in the Australian Cup last year.

Maher had considered starting Light Infantry Man in last Saturday’s Group 1 All-Star Mile (1600m) at Flemington.

The French import is one stayer that enjoys a solid tempo, something he got in winning the Australian Cup last year.

“He is one horse that does enjoy (Pride Of) Jenni’s speed,” Maher said.

“In the Australian Cup when she was ripping along, he was one of the few horses that had a smile on his face during the run.

“(Ethan) Brownie (Brown) put him into the race off a hot speed, so you know he loves a true gallop and the 1800 metres at this stage of his preparation should suit him.

“After Saturday we’re looking at the Tancred Stakes potentially with him. The 2400 metres at weight-for-age looks like it will suit him.”

The Maher team is likely to also head to the Peter Young Stakes with Berkshire Breeze who hasn’t raced since finishing second last in the Sandown Classic (2400m) in November.

Berkshire Breeze is being set for the Mornington Cup (2400m) in April which carries with it a ballot exemption into the Caulfield Cup (2400m) in October.

Joining Light Infantry Man and Berkshire Breeze in the Peter Young Stakes are likely to be the Chris Waller pair of Buckaroo and Birdman.

Buckaroo was found to have mucus when scoped on Saturday morning and was withdrawn from the All-Star Mile at Flemington.

Waller said the intention was to start the gelding on Saturday in the Peter Young Stakes with a view to contesting the Australian Cup.

Both Waller gallopers are likely to head to Caulfield on Tuesday for a gallop.

Also featuring among nominations for the Peter Young Stakes are Apulia, Astral Flame, Banker’s Choice, Chief Little Rock, Gregolimo and Whisky On The Hill
