Popular Hong Kong born jockey Christopher Pang – recently seen in a Chinatown photo shoot with Silent Witness – took time out from his busy schedule to answer our QUICK QUESTIONS…
Did you always want to be a jockey?
Not always, but once I got into racing, I knew this was what I wanted to do. The competitive side and the bond with horses really drew me in.
Do you come from a horse/racing family?
I didn’t grow up in a racing family, so everything I’ve learned came from experience and the people who have been willing to teach me along the way.
What is your first racing memory?
The time I started track work in Hong Kong. That excitement stuck with me. And I met a lot of great horsemen in the stable.
Who is your favourite horse and why?
Every horse who tries its heart out is special, but I really like horses who are tough and honest – they make a jockey look good!
Who is the best horse you’ve ridden?
At track work, Mr Brightside; he is one who gives me confidence and responds to everything you ask.
At the races, Golden Prophet. You would not think that he’d be an apprentice’s horse but I get along with him well. I’ve been lucky to win a few races on him.
And the best horse you have seen?
Recently Ka Ying Rising, but I am always with Winx!
Your favourite racing moment?
Any win where the plan comes together perfectly. Those rides remind me why I love racing. And the moment we siting in jockey room and share our daily stories.
Your best ride?
Golden Prophet. I judged the pace right and timed the run well. When everything clicks, it feels effortless.
Which horse currently racing would you love to be riding?
Any consistent metro class horse; I just want the opportunity to prove myself at that level.
Who do you admire most in racing?
Every jockey who stays disciplined and builds long careers. Racing isn’t easy, so longevity earns respect.
What is one change/improvement you’d love to see in racing?
More support and opportunities for young riders coming through the ranks.
What’s the funniest moment you’ve experienced in racing?
Probably the unexpected things horses do in the mounting yard, learn to laugh and stay calm.
What is your favourite pastime outside of racing?
Keeping fit and relaxing with family.
What is your favourite movie?
Spiderman.
Best concert you’ve seen?
Every live show with my partner.
What slogan summarizes your outlook on life?
Never the best, always can do better.
Favourite food?
Anything cooked by my mum.
Favourite racecourse?
Flemington.
