Toowoomba Turf Club has scrapped the slot-race model for the King Of The Mountain, with the event set to be run as a $150,000 Open Handicap over 1200 metres.
The King Of The Mountain previously operated under a slot-race structure that delivered a $750,000 prize pool, with the race first staged on New Year’s Eve in 2022.
The feature was later shifted to the Toowoomba Show Holiday in late March, however the club has confirmed the slot concept will be dropped for 2026, when the race will be conducted on Friday, March 27.
The meeting will also include the Pat O’Shea Plate for two-year-olds, which will be run for $125,000, while the eight-race program will offer more than $550,000 in total prizemoney.
Meanwhile, the Weetwood Handicap will be boosted to $200,000 in 2026, an increase of $40,000, retaining its standing as Toowoomba’s premier race.
The Weetwood raceday will continue to be staged during Toowoomba’s Carnival of Flowers in late September and will also feature the Toowoomba Cup and Toowoomba Guineas.
