Peter Moody is excited by the prospects of Millane but is wary of running the three-year-old on significantly wet ground.
Millane is due to make his third racetrack appearance in the Inglis Ready2Race Sale October 11 Plate (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday, but Moody may hold him back a week if the track does not dry out sufficiently.
The Moonee Valley circuit was rated a Soft 6 on Friday morning after heavy rain earlier in the week.
Millane scored a debut 1000m win at Flemington on soft ground in March and returned from a break to finish third behind Giga Kick, on a good track, in the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield last month.
Moody is aiming Millane at the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill on September 24 and next month’s Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
The trainer would like to get another run into Millane before the Golden Rose and has the back-up option of the Exford Plate (1400m) at Flemington on Saturday week.
“He’s in good order but he’s waiting for a good track,” Moody said.
“We’re trying to get him ready for the Golden Rose, so if he doesn’t run this week, he’ll probably have to run the week after, or he could trial at home and go straight to the Golden Rose.
“But my preference would be to give him a run.”
Moody said Millane was already looking for further than the 1200m of Saturday’s race, but he also noted the toughness of the 1200m trip at The Valley.
“I don’t want to drive him made in sprints as he’s wanting 1400 (metres) now,” Moody said.
“But I consider the six (1200m) furlongs at The Valley, outside of the Flemington straight, as the hardest six in the country.
“It’s a good test for them.”
