Trainer David Vandyke’s decision to geld promising Let’s Party Marty proved a winning move at Ipswich.
Let’s Party Marty, a prohibitive $1.28 favourite, gave Vandyke the second leg of a winning double.
An impressive winner at his first start in a good quality Doomben three-year-old race, Let’s Party Marty was a shock second at $1.45 in an Ipswich restricted event in late August.
Vandyke, who was at the Karaka Sales in New Zealand on Wednesday, ordered Let’s Party Marty be spelled and gelded to help him mature.
Stable foreman Myles Plumb said Vandyke had a big opinion of Let’s Party Marty who he believed would get to distances as far as 1600m.
“He had a trial and a jump out before today but he will be better for the run,” Plumb said.
Let’s Party Marty ran a slick overall time of 1.9.55 but the impressive part was his final sectional of 33.88 when not fully extended.
Vandyke earlier won with Delawar ($1.55) who posted his first victory in nearly three years.
Delawar was hailed as a possible black-type horse when he won his first start at Kembla Grange in March, 2015.
He had only one other run for the Peter and Paul Snowden partnership when sixth in the Listed Ballieu Stakes at Rosehill in the same month.
After a series of problems, Delawar was sent to Vandyke at Caloundra and had run two thirds before Wednesday’s win.
Delawar is well bred being by top sire More Than Ready out of Ringa Ringa Rosie who ran second to Pressday in the Group One 2010 JJ Atkins.
Winning jockey Jeff Lloyd said Delawar would get better as the distances got longer.
“He really isn’t a 1000-metre horse,” Lloyd said.
