Australian mare Ortensia has finished a gallant fourth in the July Cup won on a waterlogged Newmarket track by Mayson who led all the way.

Ridden by dual champion jockey Paul Hanagan for trainer Richard Fahey, Mayson was never in danger, going to the line five lengths clear of The Cheka.

Society Rock, who started favourite following the withdrawal of Bated Breath, finished third in the testing ground.

“When the conditions are like this, I think you are just grateful they have run well,” Society Rock’s trainer James Fanshawe said.

Ortensia’s trainer Paul Messara was proud of the mare’s effort.

“She hated the track. She’d never run on ground anything like that before,” he said.

Last season’s champion Australian juvenile Sepoy, struggled in the going and beat just one runner home at what was his final race start.

He will now go into quarantine before returning to Australia to stand at Darley stud in the spring.

His former Peter Snowden-trained stablemate Soul had better fortune, winning a Group Three race at Newbury.

After finishing fourth behind Black Caviar in the Diamond Jubilee last time, the Godolphin-owned Soul was ridden with plenty of confidence by Silvestre de Sousa.

The five-year-old, who was a winner at Meydan in March, was in front some way out and while Firebeam tried to challenge in the final furlong (200m), Soul battled it out in style.

He had four lengths to spare at the line with Firebeam holding off Maarek by a length and a quarter for minor honours.

“Soul ran very well today on ground that took a lot of effort,” winning trainer Saeed bin Suroor said on Godolphin’s website.

“He improved on his run at Royal Ascot and I am very happy to see him win. We will see how he comes out of this race before making any plans.”
