While some of us (including myself) who may still be feeling the effects from Tuesday, it’s time to bounce back here with Oaks Day. The $1 Million Crown Oaks (2500m) has attracted a strong line up and it is an open betting race due to the fact that superstar Atlantic Jewel isn’t here. The nine race card promises to be a good one.
Race One: La Vie En Rose Vase (89) 1800m
Back Me: Dead End saw plenty of them at Geelong last start. He should have won clearly and on the bigger track here, he should make amends.
Don’t Back Me: Elusive King is a money muncher that has a lone win from 10 starts. Cannot trust him.
Big Danger: Fawkner took a while to get the job done last Friday night, but he did it well enough to be a threat.
Roughie: Ulundi didn’t have much in the David Jones Cup at Caulfield behind Foreteller and can improve on a track where he races best.
Race Two: Crown Promenade Trophy 1700m
Back Me: Princess Rock was very strong in winning at Ballarat last start and she has plenty of scope compared to a few of her main rivals.
Don’t Back Me: Vintedge whacked it away nicely at Rosehill, but she is dropping back in distance which is a concern.
Big Danger: Foxstar had the charmed run and won like a good thing last start. She might go on with it now she has got that win.
Roughie: Tantrum has been excellent in four aussie runs since coming from NZ. Won like a good horse at Terang and can take the next step.
Race Three: G.H. Mumm Stakes 1100m
Back Me: $6 for Ortenisa? Gee that’s great value for a high class mare. Trial form indicates she is ready to win first up.
Don’t Back Me: Hard to say because it just appears to be a two horse race.
Big Danger: Valentine Miss is crying out to win a race this prep and she just about gets her chance here. Price is short though.
Roughie: Status Symbol is paying $7+ for the place, which is great value considering she wasn’t far behind Sister Madly and Valentine Miss last start.
Race Four: Gucci Stakes 1200m
Back Me: Belisimo Miss blew the start and her chances first up. Back to Flemington down the straight will see her prove hard to beat.
Don’t Back Me: Satin Shoes ran a cracking race behind Sepoy on Saturday but barrier one is a big concern with the way the track is playing.
Big Danger: Anise is one of the better fillies from Sydney and the freshen up will see her come out all guns blazing here for the Snowden camp.
Roughie: Saint Belle didn’t beat much on debut but the time was ok. She has the good barrier and the premier trainer/jockey combination.
Race Five: T C L Electronics Plate (89) 1400m
Back Me: Translation made up good ground last start at Caulfield behind Facile Tigre with that horse winning again on Tuesday. Step up to 1400m suits.
Don’t Back Me: Chosen To Fly does drop in class, but the rise in weight does concern me for the favourite. Happy to pass.
Big Danger: Dashalot has run two cracking races in town recently. Freshened, trialled sensationally at Tatura in quick time and can surprise.
Roughie: Jungle Ruler found his best form on a bog track last start and you know you’ll get a run for your money with him.
Race Six: Crown Oaks 2500m
Back Me: The money keeps coming for Dowager Queen and it’s hard to argue with that. She looks the one to beat.
Don’t Back Me: Gliding hasn’t done much. Yes she is trained by Bart and yes she won the Ethereal, but that was only cause of the Beadman ride.
Big Danger: Rahveel ran a super race on Saturday behind Atlantic Jewel. Has the bad draw, but the 2500m won’t be an issue.
Roughie: Toss up between Vittoria and Pentimento. Both ran eye catching races behind Gliding and look the blowout horses.
Race Seven: Myer Spring Fashion Stakes 1800m
Back Me: Now You Know, little brother to So You Think, showed he has a bit of his siblings ability with a thumping win at Sale. Hard to beat here.
Don’t Back Me: I am a fan of Torah, but the weight puts a line through her for me.
Big Danger: Eurayle does have the weight pull on Torah and is racing like the 1800 will suit on her home track.
Roughie: Vincente is getting better with each run and Dale Sutton horses fire always at this time of the year.
Race Eight: Swisse Vitamins Stakes 1200m
Back Me: Perturbo was scratched on Tuesday for this. Straight course specialist and Melham jumps back on.
Don’t Back Me: Master Harry is a good horse, particularly down the straight, but gee he is short in betting.
Big Danger: Canali only knows one way to run and that is fast. He’ll lead and look the winner at some part of the race.
Roughie: Cascabel was super when resuming behind Facile Tigre. Form has been franked and he loves Flemington.
Race Nine: Grazia Ultimate Style Guide 1600m
Back Me: Very ordinary race to end the day, but Face Off, with luck, will be winning this. Had no luck at Geelong and should have threatened to win.
Don’t Back Me: Cosmic Causeway ran well in the Sale Cup, but the two runs prior were even, despite winning both. He looks a risk from the barrier.
Big Danger: Belgieto is fitter, has Oliver on board and he loves Flemington. Should get the perfect run and prove hard to beat.
Roughie: Stroemsky is one of the better maidens racing at the moment and although this is a steep rise in grade, he looks capable of filling the placings.
