Paul Hanagan heads into the penultimate day of the Flat season seven winners ahead of Silvestre de Sousa in the race for the jockeys’ championship.
Hanagan began the day on 164 winners with De Sousa sitting on 156 despite missing Monday’s action through suspension and skipping Tuesday’s meetings for a ride in the Melbourne Cup.
The pair had a winner apiece at Kempton on Wednesday evening and with six booked rides at Southwell on Thursday afternoon, the Brazilian would have been hoping to make some inroads with the season finishing at Doncaster on Saturday.
However, he had to be content with just one win aboard the Mark Johnston-trained Kinloch Castle (4-11 favourite) in the Visit attheraces.com/breederscup Median Auction Maiden Stakes.
Hanagan failed to strike in Nottinghamshire and headed to Wolverhampton with eight rides while De Sousa had one less to look forward to.
Their respective number of rides proved irrelevant on the night though, as neither managed to get a winner on the board.
Hanagan is booked to partner seven horses at Wolverhampton on Friday while De Sousa has a total of 14 mounts, seven at Ffos Las and the same again back at Dunstall Park.
