Emotions ran high after improving filly Fusil De Eve won the Bruce McLachlan Classic at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.
Fusil De Eve ($5) is trained by Jason McLachlan, who wiped away tears after dedicating the filly’s win in the race named in honour of his late father Bruce.
“I said I wanted to win it for Dad and we’ve done it,” McLachlan said.
“To win the race for the second time in only three years since Dad died has been something to really celebrate.
“And believe me, we’ll be doing some celebrating tonight.”
Bruce McLachlan was leading trainer in Brisbane for several decades.
He died within months of achieving his greatest moment in racing when Phelan Ready won the 2009 Golden Slipper.
Fusil De Eve, ridden by Justin Stanley, hit the lead at the 200m and held off the $3 favourite Holey Gadoley to win by 1-1/2 lengths.
“We won this race with Gentle Giant and I really rate this filly,” McLachlan said.
“She’s kept improving every start I’ve given her and I thought this race would be ideal for her.”
