Trainer Angela Davies built on an impressive strike rate and is optimistic about the future following the stylish win from two-year-old She’s A Stalker at Canterbury on Wednesday.
Davies, who only prepares a small team at Gosford on the NSW central coast, notched her 17th win from 40 starters on all tracks so far this season when She’s A Stalker chased down Secret Sham to win the Tabsportsbet Plate (1200m) by 2-3/4 lengths in heavy conditions.
“I picked her out at the Magic Millions Sale last year. She was the only one I wanted to come home with and I was thrilled when we got her,” Davies said.
The filly by Ferocity was knocked down to Ronstel Thoroughbreds for $70,000 at the sales and claimed her maiden win at her third start on Wednesday.
“We’ve always had a huge opinion of her and that’s why I took her to Scone for the $140,000 race last start but she had no luck (finishing eighth),” Davies said.
“I was worried sick today about the wet track and she really didn’t handle it that well, but class got her home.”
Davies said she would monitor the weather but would like to give the filly the chance at a Saturday city win before the end of the season.
However, the biggest aim for Davies with She’s A Stalker is in January next year.
“I would like to target the Magic Millions three-year-old race. That’s the one I’m aiming at,” she said.
She’s A Stalker’s jockey Corey Brown was one of three hoops who rode a winning double on the seven-race card along with Glyn Schofield and Peter Robl.
Brown believes there is plenty of upside to She’s A Stalker.
“You’re going to have a lot of fun with her,” Brown told the filly’s connections.
Hugh Bowman also got on the board to extend his lead over Nash Rawiller to 11-1/2 in the Sydney premiership with an all-the-way on the Chris Waller-trained Ridotto in the Canterbury Park Handicap (1550m).
Ridotto’s success brought up a treble for premier trainer Waller after earlier wins to Hydropower and More More More.
It took Waller’s season haul in Sydney to 104-1/2, 9-1/2 in front of Gai Waterhouse who didn’t have a runner at the meeting.
