Gai Waterhouse has another unbeaten three-year-old looking to make a spring carnival impact after Proisir was a contemptuous winner of Wednesday’s Spring Stakes at Newcastle.

The champion trainer and stable jockey Nash Rawiller were left stunned by the colt’s 5-3/4 length victory as the short-priced favourite in the Group Three 1600m race.

“I think you saw an unbelievable animal here today,” Rawiller said at the race presentation.

“Just keep following him.”

A short time later Rawiller said, “he surprised me, surprised everyone how he let go” while adding, “I think he is an exceptional horse”.

“Wasn’t that fantastic,” Waterhouse said.

“He can win the Spring Champion Stakes.

“I might take him to Melbourne after that, he might go for a spell, he could win anything in the autumn.”

Of course Waterhouse and Rawiller have the unbeaten juvenile triple crown winner of last season, Pierro, heading south and the colt is favourite for the Group One Caulfield Guineas at Caulfield on October 13.

That is a week after the Group One Spring Champion at Randwick.

“I’m still shaking,” said Mario Falcone who along with his brother Tony bred Proisir who is now three wins from as many outings.

“We’ll take it one step at a time, do whatever the boss lady wants. We appreciate Gai’s knowledge.”

Proisir easily accounted for Patinack Farm’s colt Trophies while Darley Stud’s Proverb was a half head away in third place.

His victory gave the Waterhouse-Rawiller combination a double after the earlier victory by Deralon, who atoned for his loss at Wyong last start when he was first past the post but relegated to second on protest.

Proisir is by Choisir who was the first of the Australian horses to triumph at Royal Ascot. Choisir was prepared by Newcastle horseman Paul Perry who won the first race on Wednesday when Rawiller scored on Hidden Warrior.

Perry also won the Hurricane Stakes (900m) with Social Rank although his victory was soured after the grey was found to have bled.

Racing NSW stewards banned Social Rank for an automatic three months.

Rawiller made it four winners on the day when successful aboard the Darren Smith-trained Savage Blaze in the final event.
