The Mick Smith-trained Money Never Sleeps gets an ideal opportunity to atone for an unlucky last-start defeat at the same track when she runs at Goulburn on Thursday.

The five-year-old mare lines up in the Cherokee Rose Stud Class 3 Hcp (1400m).

Queanbeyan-based Smith rued a lost chance when Money Never Sleeps was narrowly beaten by Teutonic over the same trip on July 29.

The mare scored over 1400m at Wagga at her previous start on July 4.

“She was unlucky not to get the chocolates last start,” Smith said.

“After being trapped wide early she had to do a bit of work to push forward then got on the fence which probably wasn’t the best part of the track to be that day.

“They only just got her on the line.

“Money Never Sleeps has come through the run well. I’m pretty confident she can go close tomorrow.”

Money Never Sleeps has drawn perfectly in barrier one with Mathew Cahill retaining the mount.

The daughter of Delago Brom, with two wins and eight placings from 14 starts, is a third generation home-bred.

“We raced her mother (Greed Is Good) and grandmother (Mercenary). They relate back to the Alinghi family,” Smith said.

“Money Never Sleeps has been a good mare to us, probably should have won more races.

“Let’s hope she can add another one tomorrow.

“She’s a tall mare, lightly-framed, but right from day one she’s always had a lovely action.”

Last preparation the mare trained off and lost all form, frustrating Smith.

“She started missing the start, getting her tongue over the bit, all sorts of problems so we turned her out, fiddled around with different things and this time up she’s come good,” he said.

A barrier blanket appears to have fixed her slow getaways, Smith added.

“I’ve been very happy with the horse,” he said.

“We’re hoping she can win tomorrow then I’ll take her to Sydney.

“We don’t get many opportunities with horses good enough to race in Sydney.”
