Suspended jockey Ben Melham has until close of business on Friday to lodge an appeal against a careless riding penalty.
Melham, who is booked to partner Mid Summer Music in the Group One Tattersall’s Tiara at Eagle Farm on Saturday, was earlier this week outed for his part in the Flemington fall on May 19 which sidelined apprentice Katelyn Mallyon with a spinal injury.
His suspension takes effect on Friday and expires on July 11 meaning he will need to lodge an appeal and be granted a stay of proceedings in order to ride the Stradbroke Handicap winner.
The Peter Moody-trained mare, the $6.50 third favourite with TAB Sportsbet, is his only ride at the meeting.
Racing Victoria officials said Melham had until 5pm (AEST) Friday to lodge an appeal but none had been received as of Thursday afternoon.
Jockey Garry Murphy was also suspended for his part in the fall in which Mallyon fractured a T6 vertebra.
She is making a good recovery but is expected to be sidelined for the next couple of months.
