Big names Chris Waller and Gai Waterhouse have dominated the year’s racing in Sydney but on the final day of the 2011/12 season, honours went to the biggest name of all.
A double to master trainer Bart Cummings with Dragonzone and Blazing Dragon gave him bragging rights at the Australian Turf Club’s meeting held at Kembla Grange on Tuesday.
Both sported Dato Tan Chin Nam’s yellow with black and white checks, most recently carried to Group One glory in Australia by dual Cox Plate winner So You Think.
The Group Three winning Pendragon, the sire of both Tuesday’s winners, stands at Dato Tan’s Think Big Stud in the NSW Southern Highlands.
Dragonzone, who won the 2400m race on the program, is a half sister to Oaks winner Faint Perfume, while Blazing Dragons showed his staying potential winning over 2000 metres.
Visiting New Zealand apprentice Alysha Collett continued her good form with a double at the meeting.
In Australia on a scholarship sponsored by Waller, she edged out her mentor’s horse Oogy Sun to win aboard Debelle for Clarry Conners.
Collett had to survive a protest after winning on the Kris Lees-trained At All Costs to secure the double.
She is due to return home next week.
Waller was winless at the kembla meeting but secured his second Sydney premiership with 124-1/2 metropolitan winners.
