Boom colt Didntcostalot has come back stronger and smarter as he prepares for his biggest test at Warwick Farm on Saturday.
The undefeated three-year-old will aptly resume in a race sponsored by his trainer Marc Conners – the MC Conners Racing Pty Ltd Handicap (1100m).
It will mark Didntcostalot’s first test in Saturday company and he will meet a sharp field, including stakes winner Aeronautical and Group placegetters Aerobatics and Detours, although the latter is a dual nominee.
Conners is looking forward to seeing how Didntcostalot handles the challenge.
“It’s a stronger race, no doubt,” Conners said.
“A few of them have been in a lot stronger races than this as well. It’s a good test for him to see where we’re at.”
Didntcostalot, bought for just $3000, signalled his ability on debut when he won by 5-1/2 lengths and set an 1100 metre track record at Wyong.
He backed it up with victory at Gosford before coming to town and comfortably accounting for Safusa, who subsequently won the Wyong 3YO Magic Millions.
Conners said the colt was still raw and on a steep learning curve last preparation but had returned to work a more mature horse.
“He’s learning what it’s all about and hopefully he’s come on a bit more than last time,” Conners said.
“He’s always been a horse that just loves racing and wants to go a hundred miles an hour all the time.
“He has started to realise he doesn’t have to do that so hopefully he’s turned the corner in that regard.”
Didntcostalot has led all the way at his three runs and Conners describes his natural speed as his biggest asset.
But he hopes by learning to harness it, Didntcostalot can take the next step in his career.
“He’s a very fast horse and that’s his biggest attribute,” Conners said.
“If he can still run at that high speed and be relaxed within himself, it’s going to help him at the end of the race.”
Jeff Penza, who has ridden Didntcostalot in two of his three starts, is back aboard on Saturday and the colt has drawn well in barrier two.
Provided he measures up, Conners has pencilled in the Listed Fireball Quality (1100m) at Rosehill on March 3 as his target.
Given that race is a month away, Conners has ensured Didntcostalot is well conditioned for Saturday.
“If all goes well and he does win, he won’t run again for another month so we’ve done a fair bit of work with him,” Conners said.
“He had the nice trial and he’s had a couple of solid hitouts since then so he’s pretty forward.”
