Bjorn Baker’s summer streak shows no sign of abating after up-and-coming filly Quick’s The Word kept an unbeaten record at Canterbury on Wednesday.
Quick’s The Word’s win in the Tab.com.au Handicap took her sequence to three victories from as many starts for Baker’s in-form Warwick Farm stable.
She had to dig deep to hold off challenges from the fast-finishing runner-up Spellbinding and the minor placegetter Lisa Lost It.
There was drama at the start when the Kris Lees-trained I’m Mary Too threw herself against the gate, suffering a suspected broken nose.
She was declared a non-runner but the race belonged to Quick’s The Word and a delighted Baker was impressed by the way the filly managed to hold despite giving away her tiny stature.
“She’s not very big, but it was a strong, gutsy win,” Baker said. “She just kept trying and that’s we like.
“We like horses who give 110 per cent.”
Winning jockey Peter Robl agreed with Baker’s sentiments.
“It was a very good effort and a tough win,” Robl said. “She did a good job to dig deep.”
