The final field for the $3m Tatts Cox Plate (2040m) was announced at a function at Moonee Valley this morning.
Much of the discussion prior to the barrier draw centred around the makeup of the field, with five horses – Avienus, Efficient, Pinker Pinker, Wall Street and Yosei – expected to vie for the final three positions.
In the end, the committee decided that Efficient, a winner of the Victoria Derby, Melbourne Cup and Turnbull Stakes but barely raced over the last two years, deserved a position in the nation’s weight for age championship.
It would have been a travesty if he didn’t gain a start.
Avienus and Yosei were made the emergencies.
