It has taken a long time but Glyn Schofield was delighted to finally get back aboard outstanding sprinter Hay List in a pleasing workout at Gosford on Tuesday.
“It was the first time I’ve ridden him this preparation since he was injured up in Brisbane (last May) and I couldn’t be happier with the way he feels,” Schofield said.
“Obviously he’s not as fit as he was the last time I rode him because he’s on the comeback trail but he feels good.”
Hay List will take another step forward in his comeback to top level racing when he lines up in a Randwick barrier trial over 1000m later this week.
“He trials on Friday and that will give us a lot more of an indication but I’m very happy with the horse,” Schofield said.
The dual Group One-winning sprinter hasn’t raced since his second to Black Caviar in the BTC Cup at Doomben on May 14.
The powerhouse gelding was set to start a short-priced favourite in the Group One Doomben 10,000 (1350m) two weeks later but was scratched on the eve of the event with what turned out to be a life-threatening leg infection.
Hay List is being aimed at a return in the Group One Lightning Stakes (1000m) in Melbourne on February 18 and Schofield is excited to have him back.
“I’m like a dog with two tails at the moment,” Schofield said.
“These are the horses that make you jump up out of bed in the morning to get out and ride them.
“It’s great to have him back and at this stage everything is going great.”
