Blacktype racing in Adelaide returns to Morphettville this Saturday where it is Morphettville Guineas Day. The weather is overcast, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out a metre for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:11) Seymour Bloodstock Maiden Plate 1050m
1 Cobber (Bet Now: $5.00) is a frustrating horse…well he has to be for the Balfour camp because he sure is for punters. Still, I liked the way he finished off his race first up at Balaklava when making up a stack of ground late to run second to Equidame. Think he might want further, but if they go hard in front, he’s the one.
11 Mondo Magic (Bet Now: $3.10) was backed off the map when racing over 1100m here a fortnight back and halfway down the straight, the move looked set to come off but she paddled late and was bloused by Unscopeable. I think the slight drop back will suit, Kah on, should lead and take some beating.
7 Desxiri (Bet Now: $23.00) is a Pluck mare first up for the Kennewell yard. She ran twice during the early part of the Spring in a couple of strong maidens won by My Snip and Gogo Grace, with both of those having hot city form next to their names. Trial leading in was very good and stable is firing with their first up runners at the moment.
Race 2. (13:51) Quayclean & Cleanaway Handicap (64) 1100m
Going to take the chance with 3 Counterplay (Bet Now: $2.00). Smart looking filly for Phillip Stokes who is first up here after winning two for two in the latter part of the Autumn, including a dominant win over the 1000m here before being tipped out. Trialled here a couple of weeks back and looked very good in winning and ran good time. First up at 1100m looks ideal and she should be leading/box seat and proving hard to beat.
1 Tabbing (Bet Now: $7.50) is a smart Your Song gelding that resumes for the Jon O’Connor yard. He is a nippy customer who will bowl long in front at a high speed and look to hold on. 1100m fresh is interesting but he did look very in a recent trial here behind Counterplay despite running last of four. Think he will give a great sight.
5 Secret Reward (Bet Now: $7.00) was five weeks between runs when racing at Sandown on August 16 where he had a suck run behind the speed and tried hard all the way behind Esperance in what looks to be a good form race for this event. I also think back to 1100m is a big tick because 1200m does seem a stretch.
Race 3. (14:26) Hyland Race Colours Handicap (82) 2500m
2 Kellstorm (Bet Now: $1.65) should be taking care of this lot. He has been low flying in recent times for the Weir camp over the staying trips here, and has been quite dominant against near identical fields, the latest coming a fortnight back where he justified the $1.80 quote and gapped them. Should do something similar.
3 Flying Casino (Bet Now: $15.00) is a beauty for the Hickmott camp who is never far away from the action and always tries hard. Whether he can beat Kellstorm is another matter but his effort behind that horse two weeks ago was pretty good after being held up at a vital stage. Should run a place all things being equal.
7 Duquessa (Bet Now: $34.00) isn’t the most reliable mare for the Dodson stable but she can produce a decent finish on her and sneak a place. She just got too far back in the Kellstorm race mentioned above in a race that really was dominated by those nearer the speed. If she can sit a tad closer and get the suck run, she can pull out a decent sectional.
Race 4. (15:01) Goldin Farms Morphettville Guineas 1600m
2 Mutamayel (Bet Now: $2.50) for me here. Handy looking Hayes/Dabernig trained colt who is two for two to kick off his career. Got the job done on debut at Pakenham on the Synthetic before going to Sandown where he took on some really nice types and burnt the candle at both ends to win. No issues with the mile and this is a thin race.
10 Bring Me Roses (Bet Now: $3.60) is the fascinating runner here. Tony McEvoy trained filly who hasn’t raced since July 22 in the Oaklands where she charged home from the back to run third to the above average Victorian galloper Terry. Fresh at the mile tells me she’s ready to go and stable rider steers.
3 Dobell (Bet Now: $17.00) was the rank outsider when debuting in a 1300m race on the Parks track on August 12 but he was pretty good in winning to the eye. Settled last in the run before Hurdle eased him the widest on the turn and he finished best in a driving go. He can only improve off that again and is a knockout chance.
Race 5. (15:41) LUCRF Supports Jockeys Handicap (80) 1100m
6 Nodoubtaboutit (Bet Now: $4.80) can be a tough mare to trust/follow but she showed here a fortnight back that she is quite capable of picking up some blacktype if placed right. The win was just electric, Cuddled all the way and didn’t see clear air until 200m out when she burst through and savaged the line. If she reproduces that here, she just about wins.
2 Quilista (Bet Now: $1.95) is a talented mare for the Weir yard. She had her first run for the stable three weeks back at Caulfield where she was confidently backed off some nice jump outs and she didn’t let the punters down in a race where the form stood up really well last week. Maps well again and has the form on the board.
1 Ample On Offa (Bet Now: $31.00) is a Chris Bieg trained mare that is first up here. Her efforts during the Autumn were good without setting the world on fire, which did include a couple of unlucky efforts in Melbourne. Can sprint well fresh and her trials leading in have been quite encouraging. Keen to see what the market does.
Race 6. (16:21) National Jockeys Trust Handicap (70) 1200m
5 Pound Sterling (Bet Now: $13.00) represents really good value for mine here. He comes through the Magnus Knight race here a fortnight back and just did a bit too much work on speed I thought when five lengths off in running seventh. Wong takes over now, should ping from the wide draw and take some beating at a price.
2 Hussybay (Bet Now: $3.30) is an above average gelding for Mick Huxtable who is first up here. He produced some really good efforts during the Autumn, most notably a fast finishing fourth in the Port Adelaide Guineas. Resumes with no trials, and better suited over slightly further, but there is a bit of quality about him and he is unbeaten in two fresh runs.
1 Wasabi Bob (Bet Now: $6.50) is a talented Macdonald/Gluyas trained four year old that resumes. He contested some nice races during the Carnival here, including the Port Adelaide Guineas where he was ridden upside down yet stuck on really well to run fifth. Resumes with no trials, but sprints well fresh, likes the track and is proven on wet ground.
Race 7. (17:01) Fleurieu Milk Company (90) 1200m
Keen on 8 Oberland (Bet Now: $3.50) here. Darren Weir trained galloper who has had a couple of runs for the stable and has been excellent. No luck first up at Caulfield when bolting but no clear run. Then went to the Valley where he was given a peach by Lane and he looked home but the class of Oak Door kicked in to nab him. Third up, 1200m, big track…yes.
11 Counter Spin (Bet Now: $7.50) deserves a crack at this kind of race. He ran over this track/distance a fortnight back and he looked like Black Caviar 400m out. He was absolutely jogging and it was just a matter of Raquel Clark pushing the button and careering away, which is what happened. Harder here, but very fit and in form.
Enormous respect to 3 Go The Journey (Bet Now: $7.00). He has been outstanding in recent times, winning two on the bounce before a narrow and gutsy second to Chamois Road four weeks back at this track. Should ping from the gate to lead/be on speed I feel, and given he is hard fit/in form, he might take some catching.
Race 8. (17:40) UBET Handicap (70) 1600m
3 Night’s Watch (Bet Now: $1.80) is a very interesting runner here. Darren Weir trained galloper who was backed as if he was Winx last Wednesday at Sandown and while he didn’t win as impressively as she did, the win was still outstanding for a midweek event. Looks to have a bright future, enormous upside and looks the one for me here.
11 Von Costa Glass (Bet Now: $5.50) was pretty disappointing I thought fresh on the Parks track behind Vieira but the gelding bounced back in a big way at Gawler when careering away under Finnegan to win by nearly six, running time, doing it easily. Showing good promise this gelding is so I am happy to give him another look in town.
16 Sagaab (Bet Now: $35.00) is a model of consistency for the Travis Doudle yard in recent times. Running fourths, but they are very good fourths in strong races, the latest coming a fortnight back here behind Danouli. Back to the mile with a cold ride, he can launch late and ambush these for sure.
