A nine race card has been assembled for Randwick this Saturday where it is June Stakes Day. The weather is overcast, the track is heavy (9) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:25) Spring On Sale Handicap 1000m
There looks to be a bit to like about 2 Beidi (Bet Now: $3.70) for Chris Waller. Unwanted in betting when debuting at Canterbury a couple of Wednesdays back but he got the lovely sit off the speed and once Angland popped him into clear air, he lengthened nicely and scored a good debut win. Has enormous upside and will be strong late compared to some engaged here.
8 God of Thunder (Bet Now: $3.20) is the real unknown. He was well backed in the Beidi race at Canterbury but was a drunk it seemed around the turns and looked all at sea. Ordered to trial and he lit up the Warwick Farm track on Monday when bolting up by nearly five. He looks smart so give him another chance.
3 Beware (Bet Now: $9.00) is one horse who will be suspect at the end of a hard 1000m at Randwick but there was a stack of merit in his debut win at Gosford. Penza burnt the candle both ends on debut and he toughed it out strongly for a narrow but impressive win. More depth here, but big tick for that first up triumph.
Race 2. (12:00) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1100m
I think each way, 7 Got Nothing (Bet Now: $5.50) can run well. George Wright has this horse going really well at the moment. Toughed it out strongly to win first up at Parkes before going to Dubbo where he ran a close up third to the well performed Tiara Star. Gets massive weight relief this time around and I think the Randwick 1100m with a bit of give in the track is ideal.
3 Rumba Queen (Bet Now: $2.50) is on the quick back up for Danny Williams after leading all the way to win on Tuesday at Goulburn. Nick Heywood rode the mare nicely in front and though tired late, she clung on to win. I think back to 1100m is perfect for her and she is hard fit, which is what you need in these conditions.
4 Go The Gantry (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Gayna Williams trained galloper who resumed in the She Knows Highway here two weeks ago and was first up without a trial, so there was always going to be improvement. He ran well I thought without much luck and should have finished closer. Very good second up record and the extra trip is a big tick.
Race 3. (12:35) #theraces Handicap (77) 1100m
2 Revenire (Bet Now: $3.00) gets the nod. James Cummings has this horse going really well at the moment. Thought the gate would be a bit sticky last time out at Warwick Farm but Tye Angland rode him a treat and once he got clear air, it was game over and showed a nice turn of foot to win. Tick over trial last week here was quite good and handles all conditions.
1 She Knows…(Bet Now: $3.00) well Danny Williams has done a remarkable job with this filly. She has seemingly been in work forever but continues to race at a really good level. Bolted up in a Highway at Randwick a fortnight back, lumping 62.5kg with Blake Shinn steering her superbly. If this was 1000m, big tick…just not sure about her at 1100m on a bog.
9 You Make Me Smile (Bet Now: $8.50) is a well bred So You Think colt who resumes for Jason Coyle. Formerly trained by Steve O’Dea but his first prep for Coyle last time in was a beauty, winning two races over the Nowra 1200m before being close up at Kembla. Like what I have seen from him at the trials and is a definite for exotics.
Race 4. (13:10) Winter Racing Handicap (87) 2000m
I think the value lies with 3 Oklahoma Girl (Bet Now: $6.50). Chris Waller trains this mare, who has been ticking over okay this time in but has been crying out for a bog track, and she gets that here this afternoon. Her run behind The Getaway was pretty good on a relatively firm surface. Gets a decent weight pull on Araaja here and is hard fit.
2 Araaja looks (Bet Now: $2.00) to be going really well for the Chris Waller team. She ran over 2000m at Rosehill three weeks back in what was a strongly run race and you could make a little case that she should have won, but just didn’t get clear running at the right time. Has the upside, in the right stable and will be strong late.
9 Ashkannd (Bet Now: $21.00) is a swimmer so he’ll get conditions to suit. He has only had one run back this prep, which came over 1550m at Canterbury when down the track behind Gresham. Up to 2000m is ideal for him, three time winner on heavy going and does drop 6kg in weight. Doubt he wins, but I think a definite contender for a first four.
Race 5. (13:50) ATC Owners Benefit Card Mile (90) 1600m
4 I Am Serious (Bet Now: $2.30) should be winning provided she has backed up and Chris Waller rarely gets it wrong when backing up a horse in seven days or less. Her run last Saturday over 1500m at Rosehill was unbelievable. Had no right to get as close as she did given the tempo and how far back she was, but she got very close to nabbing Volpe. If she has recovered from that, she’ll just about be winning up to the Randwick mile.
5 Bastia (Bet Now: $3.30) is a mile specialist so he looks an obvious threat. Avdulla gave him a peach at this track/distance a fortnight back, settling off the pace before he got the split between runners and his turn of foot came to the fore, spanking his rivals. He is better when the track has give in it so I’ll be respecting.
3 Our Gravano (Bet Now: $6.00) comes through the Volpe race mentioned above. He was a little unlucky in the run, not really getting clear air at any stage when appearing to be going well. His NZ form is very good on wet tracks and he gets that here on the seven day back up, so he ticks a few boxes for mine.
Race 6. (14:30) Tab.com.au Handicap (72) 2000m
2 Jolly Honour (Bet Now: $5.00) on top in a race I’m not that confident about. He ran over the 1550m at Canterbury last time out where he got back in an on pace dominated affair but he worked to the line pretty well when third behind stablemates Gresham and Revolver. That form has obviously been franked and being by Reliable Man, he should swim.
9 Britannicus (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Roman Emperor gelding for John Thompson who is starting to build up a good little profile. Toughed it out strongly to place two back over 2100m at Wyong before stepping back to 1850m at Newcastle where he was absolutely bolting in the run and won accordingly. Back up to 2000m, he can prove hard to beat.
13 Subban (Bet Now: $13.00) is a progressive three year old for Bryce Heys who comes through the Live And Free race at this track/distance two weeks ago. He was near the speed throughout and like he has done most times this prep, he hits a flat spot and seemingly is going nowhere, but he picked up and in the end his effort was sound. Doubt he wins, but one for exotics.
Race 7. (15:10) Stayers Cup 3200m
I think each way, you can’t go wrong with 8 Red Dream (Bet Now: $8.00). He looked gone last time out over 2600m at Gosford, but under hard riding from Layt he found and in the end, he really attacked the line with purpose to score a decisive win. Handles a track with give in it and he gives the impression that two miles will be no issue.
1 Destiny’s Kiss (Bet Now: $2.60) is just an absolute beauty for Joe Pride and no reason to see why he can’t race on into next season. McKell Cup win last start was great. He looked gone 300m out after making a searching run down the side but he kept finding and lifted late to nab Naval Warfare. Is a previous winner of this race and is the class.
11 Thunder Road (Bet Now: $26.00) is on the seven day back up for the Longmire sisters after scoring a gritty win last Saturday over 2400m at Kembla Grange. He settled out the back and never really looked likely but once Robbie Dolan got fair dinkum, he surged and got the win, admittedly in the far superior ground. Class probably says no but the low weight and wet track brings him right into the mix.
Race 8. (15:50) June Stakes 1100m
Impossible race. I’ll have a throw at the stumps each way with 12 Machinegun Jubs (Bet Now: $26.00). She had good market support when resuming in the Ortensia but just did a bit too much work in the run from the draw when finishing midfield behind To Excess. She does go very well on a track with give in it and looks to get a good run off a hot speed.
6 I Thought So (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Team Snowden trained sprinter who I was keen on when resuming for the new stable a fortnight back here and though a little unlucky early on in the straight, I thought he got out in time to win but was bloused in the last hop by Dreamforce. He’s a tough bugger to trust, but has to be included because the stable have got him going well.
Happy to have something each way on 11 Highly Geared (Bet Now: $31.00). She drops a fair bit in depth after running in the Ortensia during the Scone Carnival where she was near the speed and it was a day where being on pace was a tough ask. Has run well here before and this race, overall, isn’t overly strong, so I think she can run well at odds.
Race 9. (16:30) ATC Sprint (85) 1200m
9 Star Reflection (Bet Now: $5.50) isn’t one of mine. Hard to trust but the form reads well for her to go close against this bunch. Took on the boys over 1200m at Rosehill last time out and worked home strongly nearer the inside to run third to dominant winner Missile Coda. 1200m at Randwick looks ideal for her and she should take some beating.
Happy to give 2 Noire (Bet Now: $2.80) another look here. Chris Waller trains this mare, who was off the map when resuming over 1200m at Rosehill three weeks back and on face value, I thought she was ordinary behind Missile Coda, but breaking down the splits, she was very good. Think she wants further, but 1200m on the wet track will feel like further.
6 Powerline (Bet Now: $9.00) is a talented grey that resumes for Kris Lees. He can be hot and cold at times, but the talent is certainly there and he’s more than capable of beating up this field. Hasn’t raced since finishing down the track in the Magic Millions Cup behind Care To Think. Good fresh horse, likes Randwick and his two trials leading in have been encouraging.
