Bunbury Cup 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Bunbury Cup
Race 1. (15:29) BTC 150Th Anniversary Plate 1000m
1 Blue Rocket (Bet Now: $SP.00) for me. He debuted two weeks ago at Ascot where he produced sustained speed from the front, leading throughout and giving nothing else a look in to win quite comfortably. Looks a good type and with his racing pattern, he’ll press forward and in not an overly strong race, he’s the one to beat for mine.
6 Mean Machine (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a colt that I think has an engine under the hood. This guy has had two trials this prep to get ready for start one, both over 400m at Lark Hill, and each time has won impressively. It is hard to get a real guide on those short course trials but from what I saw, he moved quite well, enough to say he’ll take beating here.
9 Divine Impact (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a daughter of Playing God for Neville Parnham that is on debut. This girl hasn’t moved too bad in trial, her latest trial being over 1000m at Belmont when placing and moving well enough to my eye. Potentially a tricky gate, but stable has done well with their juveniles so watch the market.
Race 2. (16:04) Bunbury Brighter Hcp 1000m
1 Tycoon Harry (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an absolute beauty for Jim Taylor and rates as one of the hardest to beat. He took on the older horses at Ascot two weeks ago where he had the dream run in transit behind the speed before angling clear and he knuckled down strongly in the straight to win and win well. Returns to his own age, track/distance winner two back, he’s clearly the one to beat.
Good test here for 2 Insyde Success (Bet Now: $SP.00) but he has earned a crack after a spank job first up win at Albany, producing sustained speed from the front and giving nothing else a look in, winning by a space and running good time. Tricky gate, but presses forward and will take running down.
6 Close Talker (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Simon Miller trained filly that comes here off a first up maiden win, which came at Pinjarra when leading throughout down the straight and showed good ticker late to fend them off and win. Think she has an engine under the hood, certainly enough to take this out I’d suggest.
Race 3. (16:39) Westspeed Platinum (Rs0ly) 1200m
3 Ultimate Command (Bet Now: $SP.00) on top. Neville Parnham trained mare that resumed at this track/distance last week where she was near the speed throughout and she tried her guts out but couldn’t quite get the win when a narrow second to Boots Like Bruce. The depth here isn’t overly deep and gets an ideal map from the gate so she rates highly for me.
4 No Dice (Bet Now: $SP.00) is third up from a spell and should just about be at peak fitness. This mare just looked in need of the run fresh behind Antique Miss before going to Ascot several weeks back when back and failed to make up any real headway behind Indie Ruler, who is flying. Her best is good enough, just needs to show it on race day.
2 Desert Vixen (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an improver for Simon Miller. This mare resumed at Ascot two weeks back over 1000m where she looked in need of the run and that’s how it panned out when down the track behind Halatorian. Better suited here I feel and with good upside to come, she rates highly.
Race 4. (17:19) Summit Realty South West (Rs1mw) 1200m
7 Simple Logic (Bet Now: $SP.00) on top but not really a race I want to get involved in. Meryl Hayley trains this former Neville Parnham gelding, with his last run being a win at Ascot just over two weeks ago when getting the suck run in transit before angling clear and finished best. Racing really well and despite the stable change, he rates highly.
6 Playing Rio (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes here with fresh legs for Paul Hunter, having not raced since Jan 17 when a narrow but strong winner at Pinjarra over 1400m, just finishing best but was impressive after sitting on speed. Fresh legs into this but he’s genuine, maps ideally and should be strong at the end.
1 Boots Like Bruce (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks to have returned in really good order for Anne King. He resumed at this track/distance last week where led throughout and was impressive. Credit to him, he was there to be run down but he found under pressure to fend them off and was strong in winning. Good test here, but think he measures up.
Race 5. (18:00) William Barrett & Sons Vase (Rs1mw) 1675m
8 Forever Boy (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes straight to Saturday metro level from a maiden but he is progressive and certainly heading in the right direction. Michael Grantham trained three year old that was a maiden winner last time at Pinjarra, giving them a start and a beating in an impressive display. He was only second up there so he has room for improvement and more upside than most.
4 Nero King (Bet Now: $SP.00) is knocking on the door. He ran over the mile three weeks ago at Pinjarra where he got back to near last in the run and rocketed to the line late, just missing out on the win when a narrow second to Premium Girl. If he can settle closer in the run and be within range, he’ll take holding out I am sure.
1 Snazzler (Bet Now: $SP.00) is three weeks between runs for Jason Pateman since racing at Pinjarra when attempting to lead throughout over the mile and giving a strong kick but couldn’t quite see it through when a tiring fifth to Premium Girl. I think with a more conservative steer, a bunny to chase, he’ll be more effective and can take this out.
Race 6. (18:35) Mgib (Bm66+) 2200m
5 Filthy Habits (Bet Now: $SP.00) on top for me. He is on the seven day back up after racing over 1800m last Saturday, back from 2200m, where he attempted to lead throughout and gave a strong kick but couldn’t quite see it through when nabbed on the peg by Icebergs. Back up to 2200m, hard fit, in form, good racing style, he’s likeable.
3 Captain Pluto (Bet Now: $SP.00) has been a bit hit and miss since joining Team Williams but for the most part, he has done a solid job and commands respect. He ran three weeks ago over 2000m at Pinjarra when just off the speed and he tried his guts out but couldn’t quite get the win when fourth to Tiff’s Lad, beaten 1.4L. He rises back up in trip, he maps ideally and should be strong late. Definite threat.
10 Flower In The Wind (Bet Now: $SP.00) is racing well but is finding it very hard to win. Neville Parnham trained mare that ran three weeks back at Pinjarra in the Tiff’s Lad race mentioned above. She got a fair way out of her ground and did make up headway without a great deal of room to move. If the breaks go her way, she can win…just finding it hard to trust.
Race 7. (19:15) Bunbury Stakes 1400m
I want to give 13 Red Fifty Three (Bet Now: $SP.00) another look. I was keen on him running well in the Pinjarra Classic last time and I thought he was going to be in the finish but he copped a bad check and was lucky to stay on his feet, eventually finishing down the track behind River Rubicon. Gets Chris Parnham on and drawn out, he’ll get clear air, room to move, he’ll take holding out.
4 Searchin’ Rocs (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one of the key threats. Jim Taylor trained mare that resumed in the Pinjarra Classic when wide no cover for the trip but credit to her, she kept on and looked the winner but had to settle for a narrow second to River Rubicon. If she can get a more economical run in transit this time around, she has the class to take this race.
10 Crescent City (Bet Now: $SP.00) has a good second up record and can be an improver at odds. He resumed in the Pinjarra Classic where he got back to near last in the run and was never a winning factor, but he wasn’t too bad late in the piece behind River Rubicon. Might want one more and a rise in trip, but he is talented and will be strong at the end.
Race 8. (19:47) Bunbury Cup 2000m
I think class gets 2 Marocchino (Bet Now: $SP.00) home. He was too good for them in the Detonator two weeks ago, leading throughout and despite being strongly challenged by Black Fantasy, he drew clear late and was dominant in the run to the line. Fitter, proven big weight carrier, lands in front and will be tough to get past once again.
1 Casino Seventeen (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a big improver for Team Williams. Perth Cup winner that ran a fortnight back in the Detonator and he was very good against the race shape when a closing third to Marocchino. Better set up this time around, he has class and if he can settle closer, he’s dangerous.
7 Currimundi (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a knockout hope at odds. He ran in the Detonator two weeks back where he was back near last in the run in a race suited to those on speed and while he was never a winning threat, I really liked the way he finished his race off, clocking some of the better late splits. He comes right into play if he doesn’t get too far back.
Race 9. (20:32) City & Regional Fuels (Bm72+) 1400m
3 Sisu Warrior (Bet Now: $SP.00) has a bit on these IMO. Team Williams trained gelding that resumed at Ascot two weeks ago where he got into the 1/1 before angling clear and knuckled down strongly late in the piece, just failing to get the win when a narrow second to former Victorian Ice Pick Nick. Fitter and up to 1400m, he’ll take a power of beating against these.
4 Brooklyn Pier (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an improver for Neville Parnham. This gelding ran in the Ice Pick Nick race and while on face value, he was plain, the race shape was clearly against him so be forgiving. Think with a more genuine tempo here and up in trip, he can be a definite improver at odds.
1 Rokanori (Bet Now: $SP.00) finds himself with Stephen Miller after formerly being with Team Williams. He had one run on Jan 27 when back near last in the run and failed to make up any ground behind a good horse, Real Danger. Better set up here and his best is clearly good enough to be dangerous.
