A bumper ten race card has been assembled for Hobart this Sunday where it is Hobart Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Hobart Cup 🏆: View the Field for the Hobart Cup
Race 1. (11:50) Silk Laser Clinics Maiden 1400m
4 Gee Gee Flash Too (Bet Now: $2.90) on top for me in the opener on Cup Day. Son of Clangalang for Stuart Gandy who comes here off the back of what I thought was a very good effort at Launceston, easing back from the wide gate, and was forced wide for the second half of the race, but still found the line well in defeat. Has had a few weeks off since that run and up to 1400m looks ideal.
5 Gee Gee Manpower (Bet Now: $4.40) is a stablemate of the top tip who was a month between runs when attempting to lead all the way over 1400m at Launceston last time out. Gave a good kick under Muchu but couldn’t quite see it out, tiring late to run third. Big ticks are that he’s fitter and he gets the state’s leading rider Craig Newitt in the saddle.
Have always had a bit of time for 3 Dinga’s Delight (Bet Now: $5.00). Ability wise, I think he’s the best horse in the race, but he’s starting to get this nasty habit of hitting a flat spot, which pretty much puts pay to his winning chances. Comes through the 1400m maiden from Launceston mentioned above, finishing fifth after sitting near last in the run and finding the line strongly. If this was 1600m, he’d be a good thing.
Race 2. (12:25) Ladbrokes Handicap (66) 2100m
3 Banca Nip (Bet Now: $5.50) looks the safe option here. Scott Brunton trains this son of Ustinov, who won impressively over 1800m at Longford two back before stepping back to the mile at Launceston and found the line with purpose from the back when second to Banstead. Racing as if 2100m will be ideal for him and Newitt remains on.
8 Geegees First Lady (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Dean/Wells trained mare who is racing pretty consistently this time in. Ran over 2100m at Launceston last time out when getting a good run in transit just off the speed and tried hard, but was no match late when third to Our Declaration. Interesting the blinkers come off and Visors go on, but she gets the claim and an inside gate, so think she runs well.
4 Lemon Splice (Bet Now: $51.00) could be a sneaky blowout at massive odds. This mare hasn’t done a great deal since coming to Tasmania, but this is the first time she’s getting to 2000m+ since arriving and that is when she raced best when racing in Victoria. On current form, couldn’t back her to win, but for multiples, certainly would be including her.
Race 3. (13:00) AWM Electrical Maiden/Class One Plate 2100m
These Maiden/Class One races are always fraught with danger, but 9 Olympic Honour (Bet Now: $4.80) is the one on the up and I think barring bad luck, he just about wins. He comes through the Launceston Guineas where it looked pretty much a barrier trial for him with next to no initiative shown from the rider. Serious drop in depth here, and the runs prior suggested a win wasn’t far away.
8 Rhode Away (Bet Now: $4.80) should be suited up to 2100m for the Ian Hay team. Son of All American who has raced 16 times for several placings, the latest coming over the mile at Launceston when a closing second to Kel’s Star, getting pipped right on the peg. Few runs prior ran at this trip and was sound in defeat. Pires on from a good draw, think he runs well.
10 Speed Angel (Bet Now: $11.00) drops a fair bit in overall grade/depth after contesting the Tasmanian Guineas and Thousand Guineas at her past couple of runs, both times being outclassed but for the most part, far from disgraced behind a couple of high quality fillies. Jumps to 2100m and should handle it okay. Knockout chance.
Race 4. (13:35) StrathAyr Handicap (66) 1400m
6 Rough Road (Bet Now: $4.00) is unknown at 1400m, but the way he’s racing at the moment, he should be suited up to the trip. He ran over 1200m at Launceston last time out where he got back off the speed and probing for clear air. Had to go back towards the inside, which wasn’t the A1 ground, but found the line well enough in defeat. Think up to 1400m suits and like the booking of Harry Coffey.
7 Heaven’s Delight (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Gary White trained mare who is having a super prep at the moment. Ran over 1400m at Launceston back on January 18 when off the speed before peeling wider and showing a good turn of foot, despite laying in, looking home, but was bloused near the line. If she does everything right, she can clearly win.
The unknown here is 3 Malmas (Bet Now: $13.00) for Scott Brunton. Had his first run for the stable over the mile at Launceston where I thought it was an odd ride from Pires. Kicked up big time to hold the lead, burn plenty of petrol, and the horse was gone on the turn. Forget he went around there. Victorian form is good enough to take this out.
Race 5. (14:10) Elise Archer Handicap (Class 3) 1200m
2 Easy Road (Bet Now: $4.20) on top. Adam Trinder trains this son of Super Easy, who ran over 1200m at Launceston last time out where he got badly held up at a vital stage when looking to build the revs. Did eventually get out, but the race was over. Should have gone close to winning and what I like here is a senior jock taking over. From the gate as well, should get clear air from the outset.
Good little test here for the Leanne Gaffney trained 1 Cabarrus (Bet Now: $2.60). Progressive three year old who has won two of his three career outings, the latest coming over 1200m at Launceston when outside a slow speed before Froggy got stuck in on the turn to build full momentum and got the verdict, just. Has to improve off that here, but that was his first run since September.
10 Kepta (Bet Now: $31.00) had good specking at longer odds when racing over this trip at Launceston last time out and while she didn’t win, she found the line pretty well late when third to Windrider. Off her recent runs, I think she wants 1400m, but has a soft gate and with the claim, gets down to 51kg. Knockout chance at odds.
Race 6. (14:45) Strutt Stakes 2100m
Hard to get away from 2 Still A Star (Bet Now: $1.65). She’s the best 3YO filly in Tasmania as it stands, having spanked the boys last time out in the Launceston Guineas by a space and was just so impressive. Was down to run last week, but was scratched due to not quite being 100%, but she’s ready to go now and against her own age/sex, she’s very likeable.
6 Zoulah (Bet Now: $8.00) is the unknown. Team McEvoy trains this filly, who comes to Tassie off the back of a maiden win over the mile at Sale when overcoming a slow speed. Her class came to the fore late and she was too good. Off that, 2100m should be fine for her. The knock is the form out of that maiden does look very suspect.
7 Sacred Valley (Bet Now: $14.00) lacks the class of some of these, but she will see out the trip for the Hayes/Dabernig stable. Broke her maiden status last time out at Ararat where she was on speed before taking the front on the turn and showing good ticker in the straight when challenged to fend them off and win. Like the booking of McDougall and a win wouldn’t shock at all.
Race 7. (15:20) Thomas Lyons Stakes 1400m
I think the old boy 1 Hellova Street (Bet Now: $2.70) has gone one great win left in him, hopefully here. He’s been an absolute ripper for connections for a number of seasons and comes here off the back of a tough on speed win in the Sky Stakes at Launceston. Tends to save his best for Hobart, he’ll lead and give a great kick I’m sure.
The one that he’ll have to fend off will be the stablemate 3 Mandela Effect (Bet Now: $2.20), who will use this and the George Adams as the lead ups towards a potential start in the All Star Mile. Hasn’t raced for a few weeks since taking out the Tasmanian Stakes over the mile, beating Hellova Street. Better at the mile than 1400m, but has more upside.
5 Zatacla (Bet Now: $16.00), if you’re looking for value outside the top two, is clearly the one. He was beaten less than a length in the Tasmanian Stakes before not having much luck next time out, sitting wide in the run. Gets the blinkers back on from a good draw and is another that tends to race better at Hobart than Launceston.
Race 8. (15:55) Bow Mistress Stakes 1200m
Going for a bit of value here in the shape of the Kevin Corstens trained mare 12 Street Icon (Bet Now: $17.00). Had her first run for the stable at Caulfield just over two weeks ago and was far from disgraced in defeat behind News Girl after doing work early from a wide gate. Like that Prebble remains on and from gate two, she gets run of the race. $20+, she’ll do me each way.
14 Deroche (Bet Now: $2.60) has been so well placed by Leanne Gaffney but no place to hide now as she takes on the big girls. Won over this track/distance last week against her own age and it was pretty much a barrier trial for her. Either she’s a high class filly or she’s been beating camels. Do I want to find out at $3? No, but just can’t ignore the way she’s been beating them up.
Was ready to charge into 3 Platinum Angel (Bet Now: $7.00) until the gear change came through that the Bar Plates are on, the worst gear change a punter wants to read. She’s got these covered if she ran up to her best, and we know the record Lindsey Smith has with these older horses and getting them to find their best. Huge market watch.
Race 9. (16:35) Hobert Cup 2400m
1 Home By Midnight (Bet Now: $7.50) on top for me in the Cup. I think Patrick Payne has this bloke flying and a bit surprised that $8/thereabouts is on offer. Bob of the head beat him two back at Caulfield behind Vaucluse Bay before that same set up happened again last Saturday, this time Vaucluse Bay won over 2400m and won by two lengths. The thing to note there is that the winner walked in front and nothing from behind was a chance. Good tempo here, firmer footing, Billy Egan back on…just can’t see him running poorly.
He’s a bit hit and miss is 9 Dogmatic (Bet Now: $5.50), but off what he produced last start, he’s right in the game. He ran third to Vaucluse Bay and Home By Midnight over 2000m at Caulfield and really found the line with purpose, suggesting 2400m will be fine. The stable is very hard to catch, so for mine, watch the market and see what it does. If he remains firm or is backed in, I’d be backing him too as a saver.
In terms of the locals, I think the one at odds to keep an eye on is the Scott Brunton mare 10 Glass Warrior (Bet Now: $15.00). Yes, she was well held by Toorak Affair last week, but the winner did have a 2100m lead in run, while this mare was a few weeks between runs. Think there is more upside with her and she’ll likely get to $20+.
Race 10. (17:15) Schweppes Handicap (66) 1400m
8 Ivoryman (Bet Now: $3.90) gets the nod in the get out. Son of Pins for Scott Brunton that comes here off the back of a super effort over 1400m at Launceston when back, spotting them a decent start, and finishing off his race with real purpose to run third. Just where he gets to from the gate is unknown but love the booking of McDougall.
7 Mr Tindall (Bet Now: $4.20) is racing very consistently at the moment for Siggy Carr, who takes the ride. Attempted to lead throughout over 1200m at Launceston last time out and gave a good kick but couldn’t quite see it through when third to Words Of Pride. Little query at 1400m, but has the gate to get run of the race.
11 Jack’s Choice (Bet Now: $13.00) is the knockout chance here I feel. Gary White has this mare going super and back onto the turf, she’s a big improver at odds. Last couple have come on the Devonport Synthetic and worked home strongly each time. Has a really good record at Hobart and drawn out, should get good cover and launch late.
