Eight races will be run and won on the course proper at Morphettville this Saturday. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out fourteen metres from the 1200m-400m; Out twelve metres from the 400m-Winning Post; Out nine metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:56) AAMI Handicap (82) 2500m
2 Azurite (Bet Now: $2.40) does look the one to beat. Good placement by Archie Alexander in finding a very thin staying race for this gelding, who ran over 2500m at Flkemington last time where he just didn’t have the turn of foot and probably class to go with them in a race won by Khezerabad. With the claim for Zac Spain, gee he looks a near good thing if he runs to anywhere near his best.
1 Olympic Academy (Bet Now: $1.95) is an absolute beauty for the Grant Young stable and I can only see him running well. He ran over the 2250m on the Parks track a fortnight ago and I thought he did a good job in defeat when second to Wasabi Bob, with that horse just getting an absolute picnic in front and simply outsprinting them late. Hopefully a more genuine tempo this time around and 2500m should be fine.
The race really does fall away from this pair. The bolter 4 Marman (Bet Now: $41.00) you could make the smallest of cases for. Formerly trained by David Atkins in NSW, he’s had a few runs now for John Hickmott and was going okay prior to last start, where he was ridden upside down on speed and just forget he went around. 51kg after the claim, not the worst $51 shot I’ve seen.
Race 2. (14:31) Fleurieu Milk Company Handicap (70) 1543m
I’ve been impressed with the way 1 Blue Hope (Bet Now: $3.70) has gone about his business in recent times. John McArdle trains this colt, who has won his past two, both coming at Geelong. Dominant win two back in a race which has produced two winners before stepping up to 1500m where he was short odds and ran up to those expectations with a commanding performance. Harder here, but like him against this lot.
6 Stolen Away (Bet Now: $2.45) is a Will Clarken trained filly that has showed good promise in a short space of time. Good on debut when beaten narrowly at Gawler before racing on the Parks track where he was probably left in front too early but was still too good, beating Grabbing Glory, who I’m keen on in the last, so the form looks alright…just a tricky gate to overcome.
5 City Beats (Bet Now: $26.00) took a fair while to greet the judge for Gordon Richards but the maiden win finally came on the board last start at Gawler when on speed and despite being under pressure on the turn, he kept finding and proved too good. That was his first look at this trip and he looked to handle it okay. Not sure he beats these but I think he should run well.
Race 3. (15:06) Adelaide Cup March 11 Handicap (70) 1600m
Banking on 2 Naseeb (Bet Now: $2.90) bouncing back into the winners list. Sue Murphy trains this son of More Than Ready, who won two on the bounce, including a win at this track/distance, before racing at the same scenario where he got back and just took too long to wind up but was good late. Hopefully can sit a touch closer in the run and prove hard to beat.
6 Exalted Lauretta (Bet Now: $7.00) is a ripping mare for Grant Young who has been in work forever it seems but gee she’s consistent and tough. Good effort at this track/distance two back behind Lynch Mob, who won last Saturday to frank the form. Exalted Lauretta backed up four days later at Murray Bridge where she was well backed and was an impressive winner. Harder here, but she’s just so honest.
Expecting more improvement from 1 Lieder (Bet Now: $26.00). Just a run first up at Murray Bridge before being freshened up, racing there again and he was better, working home okay late behind Tahnee Tiara. Good record at this track, third up at the mile on the big track should suit him. If he goes around silly odds, say $20+, I could definitely have something each way on him.
Race 4. (15:41) Holdfast Insurance Handicap (90) 1600m
This does look a really good race for the Peter Jolly trained 4 Morvada (Bet Now: $2.25). He has had three runs back from a spell and has definitely gotten better with each outing. Ran over 1400m on the Parks track where he settled back off the pace but worked home strongly to run second to Over And Above, closing off with purpose. Lovely placed for mine up to the mile on the bigger track.
2 Royal Rumble (Bet Now: $2.70) is a model of consistency for the Macdonald/Gluyas team. Had a stack of placings next to his name before getting such a well deserved win over 1800m here three weeks, outstaying them in a really strong effort, beating Strategic Demand, who went on to win the Great Western Cup, so the form reads alright and back to 1600m suits.
An improver at odds could well be the Stuart Gower trained 6 Silent Warrior (Bet Now: $14.00), who resumed in the Over And Above race from two weeks ago where he got back to near last in the run and was never really in the hunt in a slowly run 1400m contest. Think he wants further than this, but has had showed enough quality to bounce back hard against this lot.
Race 5. (16:21) Winning Edge Presentations Handicap (75) 1200m
Little query at 1200m but happy to side with the race fit/in form 4 Crown Fontein (Bet Now: $3.60). Just failed to run the six furlongs out two back at Gawler (Metro) before stepping back to 1000m a fortnight ago on the Parks track where he was on speed and that won him the race, beating Everyday Lady, who won last Saturday to frank the form. Just has to tick the 1200m box.
1 Holy Command (Bet Now: $4.50) is a talented son of Smart Missile for Mick Price who resumes. He had good success when racing in Adelaide last prep, placing and winning in a couple of runs on the Parks track. Last run was October 6, 2/3 first up and did trial up really well to the eye at Geelong behind a good one in Zebulon. Market will be the guide but suspect he’ll be forward enough.
3 Amberdi (Bet Now: $5.00) is the huge query here. Handy mare for Sue Jaensch that resumes, having not raced since November 17 when fourth on the Parks track behind Karlovasi in what was a deep race. Scored a massive win first up last prep in town so the stable aren’t afraid to resume them away from home and when they do, their strike rate is as good as anyone in South Australia.
Race 6. (17:01) Nutella Palooza April 20 Handicap (Class 2) 1200m
1 Danger Deal (Bet Now: $2.05) looks extremely hard to beat. This Macdonald/Gluyas trained gelding has been around the mark of late in some decent races, his last run coming a fortnight back when a close up second to the in form Kemalpasa. Suited back on the course proper I think and he’s bursting to win another race despite being somewhat costly for punters. Think he can get the job done.
4 Surreal Image (Bet Now: $6.50) looks suited back to the sprinting trip. He ran over 1500m last time here where he was on speed all the way and tried hard but just didn’t see the trip when down the track behind Yankee Eyes. Back to 1200m is ideal I think, he can land somewhere near the speed and with the hard runs under the belt, I think he’ll be strong at the end.
9 Datura (Bet Now: $12.00) looks a knockout chance. Ryan Balfour trains this gelding, who resumed at Gawler and looked somewhat unlucky for mine when held up and should have nearly won when a close up fourth to Fay’s Joy. Placed in both career second up runs and has placed in his lone run at the track, plus the speed looks as if it’ll be genuine, so he’ll get his chance.
Race 7. (17:41) Happy 60th Peter Graetz Handicap (70) 1050m
5 French Rock (Bet Now: $6.00) on top for me in a tricky race. The Francis/Kent stable trains this gelding, who hasn’t raced since December 8 when down the track behind France’s Boy in a race which has turned out to be a good form reference. He saves his best for when he’s produced first up and this is a winnable race, so I’m banking on him being somewhere around the mark.
4 Domination (Bet Now: $6.00) is a former Tony McEvoy runner who is having his second run for Grant Young. First run came a fortnight back on the Parks track where he ran an enormous race, sitting wide no cover throughout and fighting hard when a close up third to Crown Fontein, and that form was franked last Saturday via Everyday Lady. With better luck this time around, he’ll take some beating.
6 Bris Vegas (Bet Now: $11.00) is a son of Ilovethiscity for Ryan Balfour who is first up. This four year old hasn’t raced since October 13 where he ran down the track behind Miss Jane, a race which has produced five winners, so the form reads well. Resumes without a trial, normally needs a run…but his best is certainly good enough to figure in the finish and I’d include him in multiples.
Race 8. (18:20) Killer Queen Experience Feb 9 Handicap (64) 1800m
14 Grabbing Glory (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Macdonald/Gluyas trained filly by Bernadini who is still a maiden but the depth here is thin so it’ll be interesting to see how she goes. Ran in a 1400m maiden on the Parks track a fortnight ago and it was her racing pattern that beat her, getting too far back and flashing late when second to Stolen Away. 1800m, bigger track, she appeals big time.
5 Seattle Sound (Bet Now: $11.00) is a son of Americain for Tony McEvoy who had trialled up just fair prior to resuming over the mile at Murray Bridge in a maiden and he was a most impressive winner, charging away from off the pace for a dominant maiden win. Finds a very thin 64 to step up to town in, and the stable are enjoying a really good run in SA at the moment.
9 Lostarc (Bet Now: $19.00) is a Rebel Raider gelding for Ryan Balfour who has a horrible winning strike rate, but has been around the mark of late and he does strike a winnable assignment. Ran over 1500m at Gawler last time and was close up in defeat when third to the in form Outinthestreet. 0/4 on the track, but he hasn’t faced a field as easy as this in those runs.
