Brisbane metro racing this Saturday returns to Doomben where nine races have been set down. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:37) Mount Franklin Handicap 1200m
Keen on 2 Bigboyroy (Bet Now: $1.80). Chris Waller trains this juvenile, who debuted over 1000m at Eagle Farm where he probably found them a bit sharp but stuck on and was good late behind the handy youngster Epaumada. Looks a 1200m+ horse so like that he steps up in trip immediately and the depth here clearly not as strong as what he faced on debut. Happy to be in his corner.
6 Raay Of Dreams (Bet Now: $5.50) is a daughter of Dream Ahead for Kris Lees who has placed in both career outings, the last run coming at the Sunny Coast a fortnight back where she settled back off the pace and closed off well when third to the progressive Vandyke youngster Alligator Blood. I reckon this girl wants a touch further, but has the runs on the board and in the right stable.
7 Concealed Dynamite (Bet Now: $16.00) is a Les Ross trained daughter of Rothesay who has placed in three of her four starts. Last run was at this track/distance on January 23 where she was on speed all the way and tried hard but just found Sizzling Babe too good. Harder here, and seems a bit one dimensional, but has hard race fitness on her side and could fill a minor spot.
Race 2. (14:12) Coca Cola Plate (Class 3) 1600m
Going to butter up on 3 Saxton Rock (Bet Now: $3.80) for Matty Dunn. He attempted to lead all the way over the Sunny Coast mile a fortnight ago and I thought Clayton Gallagher gave him a lovely ride in front. Just found Le Juge too good. Perhaps better suited at Doomben and I think with a bit of cover, he’ll be much better off and he does have the form on the board.
2 Reckless Choice (Bet Now: $2.40) looks one of the leading contenders. Steve O’Dea trains this bloke, who was very good first up on Magic Millions Day before going to Randwick where he ran well and wasn’t beaten far behind Brazen in a race which looked to have depth to it. Up to the mile, third up at Doomben, it does look an ideal recipe and he has to rate highly.
11 Tatcee (Bet Now: $5.50) is just lacking the killer punch to put wins on the board but I think she will run alright. Ran over the mile at the Sunny Coast a fortnight ago against her own age and she ran okay without really threatening when fifth to Dawson Diva. Not sure she’s got upside left in the tank, but she’s in the right stable and she has shown promise in her career to date.
Race 3. (14:47) Canadian Club Handicap (75) 2200m
1 Mutaraken (Bet Now: $8.50) is the interesting runner. Chris Waller trains this bloke, who makes his Queensland debut after several runs in Sydney where he has run well for the most part but hasn’t greeted the judge and lately has been outclassed, so I like him back to this level and I think at his best, he would be winning this. Just depends if he does decide to bring his best.
4 Naked (Bet Now: $6.50) looks one of the hardest to beat. Barry Lockwood trains this bloke, who is three weeks between runs since racing over 2200m at Eagle Farm where he tried hard but just found Art Attack a touch too good on the day. That was his first run at the trip and he seemed to pass with flying colours, so back to this level, he will take a power of beating.
6 Red Phantom (Bet Now: $8.50) is a threat in a pretty thin race. Tony Gollan trains this gelding, who ran over the mile at the Sunny Coast a fortnight back where he never really looked like winning but he made ground and was okay late behind Le Juge. Is 0/2 at the trip, but that was as a three year old and he seems a better horse this time around, so happy to include him.
Race 4. (15:22) Jim Beam Handicap 1050m
Last chance for 1 Mishani Hustler (Bet Now: $2.80). He’s third up, against his own age and back to Doomben. Just sets up for him to win. He ran over 1200m at Eagle Farm last time where he seemed to have his chance but perhaps the six furlongs on the bigger track saw him out when fourth to Magic Fox. Back to the short course, hopefully the tactics are to jump and run.
4 Sanglier (Bet Now: $3.40) is an interesting runner. Son of Albrecht that was formerly with Godolphin but is now with Matty Dunn. He hasn’t raced since September 19 when down the track at Warwick Farm behind former stablemate Esperance. The Gold Coast trial win looked very sharp to my eye and at his best, he’s probably better than these, so interesting to see what the market does.
7 Cailini (Bet Now: $14.00) looks capable of bouncing back hard. Tony Gollan trains this filly, who resumed at the Sunny Coast a couple of weeks ago where she settled near the speed all the way and just couldn’t quite finish it off behind Archer’s Paradox. She can be hit and miss at times but at her best she’s capable of running well and the stable is absolutely flying at the moment.
Race 5. (16:02) Cascade Handicap (70) 1050m
6 Kid Flash (Bet Now: $5.00) on top. Toby Edmonds trains this four year old gelding, who has placed in both runs this time in, each race being over 1110m here, the latest when second to meet Mr Taylor, an outstanding winner at Eagle Farm last Saturday. That form reads well, suited back to 1050m and being third up, he should be hard fit, ready to go. Happy to be with him.
11 Bright Idea (Bet Now: $9.50) is the interesting runner. Tony Gollan trains this handy mare, who hasn’t raced since December 22 over 1200m at Eagle Farm when midfield behind Desert Man in a race where the form has been okay, mainly via La Scopa. I think the key to her is keeping her to the short course and keeping her fresh. Trialled well last week at Doomben and if she can land on speed without spending too many petrol tickets, she’ll be in it for a long way.
I think back to the sprinting is going to suit the Tony Golllan trained 1 Jetsonic (Bet Now: $12.00), who hasn’t won in a while but does run an honest race and will be flashing at them late. Tried to do that over 1200m last start at Eagle Farm but didn’t quite see the trip out when running sixth. Been kept on ice and trialled nicely at Doomben to my eye. Good record here also.
Race 6. (16:42) Canadian Club Handicap (Class 6) 1200m
12 Quick Ketch (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Stephen Kirkwood trained gelding who resumed without a trial at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago and I thought his run was full of merit, closing off well off a moderate speed and running an eye catching third to Pole Volter. Has run well in town before and is 3/4 when produced second up so there is a bit to like about him, hopefully at odds too.
3 Curdled (Bet Now: $4.20) has been a bit of an enigma for a while but he has been showing positive signs for Toby Edmonds and they came to fruition at Ipswich last Wednesday when proving too good for the in form stablemate Dream Master. That was his first run in five weeks so should be plenty of upside and now he’s won a race again, he could well go on with it.
2 My Girl Hayley (Bet Now: $10.00) gets one last chance. She’s been quite poor in a couple of runs this time in for the Tony Gollan stable, the latest coming at Eagle Farm three weeks back when finishing down the track behind Mishani Electra. Has had a tick over trial at Doomben behind Manaya and doesn’t mind a track with give, and she should lead, so she gets one more chance.
Race 7. (17:22) Coca Cola Handicap 1350m
I’ll side with 7 Spending My Time (Bet Now: $12.00). Paul Nolan Jr trains this three year old, who hasn’t raced since January 5 at the Gold Coast when back and making ground late behind a good one in Snow Valley. Has had a break between runs and has been kept on ice…I think the 1350m will be okay for him and he has shown enough in the past to suggest he can run well.
Back to 1350m should suit the Rex Lipp trained 5 Red Stina (Bet Now: $5.50). Brilliant win from the back to win over 1200m here two back before going to the mile at the Sunny Coast where she got back and was never really in the hunt behind Dawson Diva. Back to 1350m and back to Doomben should help her cause and I think the depth here is nowhere near as strong IMO.
3 Enterprise Prince (Bet Now: $8.50) is a son of Rothesay for Michael Lakey who is 2/2 this time in, both at Ipswich. Resumed with a maiden win over 1200m before stepping up to 1350m where he led all the way and despite being challenged late, he fought hard and was very impressive in toughing it out to get the win. Harder here, but have to like the way he’s going about it.
Race 8. (18:00) Cascade Handicap 1350m
6 Star Reflection (Bet Now: $2.60) is a Kris Lees trained mare who has been in work a little while but continues to race very well. Won a couple of races on the bounce before racing at Eagle Farm three weeks ago where she tried hard but was no match for Snoopy, who was on his game and very impressive. 1350m at Doomben is a little query, but she’s a mare in near career best form.
We’ve had So Si Bon, we had Tom Melbourne on Saturday…can the trifecta lob with 10 Oink (Bet Now: $7.00)? He hasn’t really run a bad race in a long time…but he hasn’t won in a long time either. Last run came five weeks at the Gold Coast when a narrow fourth to Star Reflection, an in form mare. That reads well…does he have the desire to win? Time will tell with him.
I think 7 Stella Ombra (Bet Now: $20.00) could be an improver at odds. He resumed over 1000m at the Sunny Coast a couple of weeks ago where the race was completely dominated by those on speed. He was back in the run and was never in the hunt in a race won by Spurcraft. Up to 1350m and back to Doomben, where he runs his best, he can be a definite improver.
Race 9. (18:40) TAB Handicap (Class 6) 1600m
Tricky race but I like 6 Shadal (Bet Now: $4.60) for Chris Waller, who has won his past two. Gutsy win over this track/distance two back before going to Beaudesert where he took on an average field and made them look average with a pretty comprehensive win. Looks to be in a real purple patch at the moment and I see no reason why he can’t make it three on the bounce.
3 Le Juge (Bet Now: $3.60) looks a key threat. OTI gelding for Chris Waller who comes here off the back of a pretty good win over the mile at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago where he was giving away a start on the turn but once Fradd got fair dinkum, he surged hard late and proved too good for Saxton Rock. That was his first run in three weeks so I’m hoping there is upside left in the tank.
I reckon with a track with give in it will really suit 1 Mishani Bullitt (Bet Now: $2.90), trained by Les Kelly who has contested some decent races in recent times, the latest being the Sunshine Coast Cup a fortnight ago when close up behind Balboa Rocks. Good record at Doomben somewhat but I think the key is getting a track with some juice, and he can win for sure. Not a long shot, but they look the only three chances IMO.
