Sydney racing continues at Rosehill this Saturday for a strong nine race card. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:35) Merry Christmas ATC Members Handicap 1100m
2 Charge (Bet Now: $7.50) is the big watch for me. Zoustar colt on debut for the Chris Waller team and has only had the one trial, which came here on November 24, and I thought he went very good to the eye. Looked to go very easily behind the front and went to the line under triple wraps from McEvoy. Looks above average and I am keen to see what he does.
1 Gongs (Bet Now: $1.55) is a Godolphin filly who is high in the market for the Slipper after she crushed her rivals on debut at Canterbury, spacing them by nearly six lengths and ran brilliant time, beating Perfect Pitch, who of course won last Saturday, so she has plenty going for her and I think she is a safe option.
6 Carnina (Bet Now: $10.00) is an All Too Hard filly on debut for the Mark Newnham team. This girl has trialled twice leading up to her first start and has won them both quite impressively in okay time. She should be able to take advantage of the inside draw and Koby Jennings does ride on pace horses quite well.
Race 2. (13:15) Golden Slipper Trophy Tour Plate 1400m
2 Heliosphere (Bet Now: $2.70) looks a good bet for mine. Talented type for the Gerald Ryan who resumed over 1200m here three weeks back where he looked as if he’d need the run but he was a real eye catcher, working home with real purpose to run third to Pretty Fast, who bolted up last week in a Listed race to frank the form. Has the upside and class to beat these.
6 Poetic Charmer (Bet Now: $4.80) was kept very safe in betting when racing at this track/distance two weeks ago and I thought he was given every chance in the run by McEvoy, but Bull Market had last say on him and got the stride in. The blinkers have really switched this horse and I’m expecting him to go close again.
3 Sparky Lad (Bet Now: $6.00) is a fortnight between runs for the Waller team after racing here last Saturday where he was hard in the market despite a break between runs and it looked as if he needed the run when fourth to Pretty Fast. That should bring him right on for this and up to the 1400m does look ideal for this progressive type. Definite threat.
Race 3. (13:50) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1400m
4 Divine Unicorn (Bet Now: $3.80 ODDS BOOST) is a horse I am very intrigued about. Lightly raced galloper for Matty Dunn who has a Hong Kong based owner so his future might be there but what he has shown so far suggests he will more than hold his own in this part of the world. Lot to like about his win last Wednesday at the Gold Coast. Did a bit wrong, wandered about but class/brilliance got him home. Keen to see what he does.
3 Volpe (Bet Now: $4.80) is on the seven day back up for the Danny Williams team who was given a sweet steer by Overmiere to win a 1200m Highway here last Saturday. Would have been a tragedy beaten had he not go out but the apprentice waited before shoving into the clear and dashing away. Up to 1400m looks perfect.
8 Annecy (Bet Now: $20.00) is a handy mare for the Ryan Team who has been earmarked as a Highway horse for some time and I am keen to see what she does in what looks a strong Highway. She ran over 1400m at Hawkesbury last time out and was a bit green in the straight but was sound late behind Sharpness. She has a booming finish on her when cuddled, so look out.
Race 4. (14:25) ATC Owners Benefit Card Handicap (83) 1400m
3 Noire (Bet Now: $2.90) is a Foxwedge mare for the Chris Waller team who resumed over the 1100m at Canterbury and despite being a drifter in betting, she let down with a powerful finishing burst to grab them close to home. The form around her does read very well and she is only second up, so there should be room for improvement.
7 Queen Misty (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Les Bridge trained mare who was confidently backed when racing under the lights at Canterbury but she just got too far back in the run and was held up early in the straight while the eventual winner Satirical Magic dashed and stole a march. Can pull out a run second up and overall, this is a thin race.
2 Overstep (Bet Now: $7.00) is getting close to a win I feel and she strikes a very winnable race. Just did a bit too much work in the run here two weeks back yet she stuck on very well and was sound to the line and through it when third to Positive Problems. I think up to 1400m is what she is looking for and rates highly for me.
Race 5. (15:00) National Jockeys Trust Handicap (80) 2000m
6 Gambler’s Blues (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Tim Martin trained seven year old who is racing quite well this prep but just can’t quite crack it for a win. Gave a good kick when racing over 1800m here a fortnight back when getting past Zahspeed but Dagny had last say and nabbed him late. Up to 2000m third up looks an ideal recipe for success.
5 Impavido…(Bet Now: $5.50) I couldn’t touch him with a bad coin, but it’s a race where I am struggling to fins anything with confidence. I think though he can be forgiven for his failure here three weeks back given he had to do a fair bit of work to chase Lead Choreographer and by the time he got there, he was gassed. Lord KIngsley has franked that form, he draws well…surely last chance.
4 Strike Force (Bet Now: $18.00) looks clear overs for mine. Had really good backing last time out in the Wodonga Cup but the bias that day for those leading was clearly evident and he just couldn’t reel in Bel Burgess, but his effort was more than sound. Quickly up to 2000m is the query, but you have to respect the stable.
Race 6. (15:40) Beanie For Brain Cancer Handicap (90) 1400m
9 Flow (Bet Now: $2.45) on top. James Cummings trained gelding who resumed over 1400m at this track three weeks back where he was given every chance by Avdulla but the hard fit Redouble just outgunned him, but his effort was still strong in defeat. Dynamite second up records and finds a very winnable race.
2 Firsthand (Bet Now: $4.00) is going about his business quite nicely at the moment and should take some beating off a closing second to Cabeza De Vaca three weeks ago at this track/distance. Never really looked likely but he kept chasing and was strong to the line and through it. One of the hardest to beat.
6 Maryore (Bet Now: $21.00) is the interesting runner. Joseph Ible trained mare who won the Provincial Championship Final in such dominant fashion is first up in what looks a tricky race. Has a poor first up record but I want to include her because she has looked quite impressive to my eye in a couple of barrier trials, one at Randwick and one at Canberra. Chuck her in exotics.
Race 7. (16:20) Mark Hughes Foundation Handicap (89) 1100m
13 Bon Amis (Bet Now: $2.80) for me. Jason Deamer trained boom sprinter who was outstanding when winning here first up before racing again here at the track/distance where he was wide/no cover throughout yet was very strong late when second to all the way winner Don’t Tease Me. Tough ask against some quality types, but he’s a quality type himself.
11 Test The World (Bet Now: $4.00) is a very good mare for the Bjorn Baker yard who comes through the Don’t Tease Me race here a fortnight back at the track/distance where the market said she’d need the run and to an extent she did, but she did get pretty close to the winner. Has enormous upside and has a lethal second up record.
6 Ziggy Willie (Bet Now: $19.00) hasn’t won for just over 12 months but if we get a track with that little bit of give in it, he could surprise. Had the little freshen up prior to racing at this track/distance a fortnight back where he got back and worked home well when third to Glenall, who franked the form in the Starlight. Should strip fitter and gets McEvoy steering.
Race 8. (17:00) ATC Membership Now Open Sprint (80) 1200m
6 Drachenfels (Bet Now: $4.20) is a real enigma but I will say he has hit the line with purpose at his past two outings. Just missed in a blanket finish two back at Canterbury before racing at Randwick on Cup Day and I thought he was quite impressive in winning. Trialled up well recently at Randwick and I think now he has that winning feeling again, he can go on with it.
10 Torpenhow (Bet Now: $10.00) is a talented son of Street Cry first up for the James Cummings team. This bloke hasn’t raced since July 22 at Randwick when running a game third Kings Of Len in what looked a strong race at Randwick. Been given a really good spell and I like the way he has looked in a couple of barrier trials.
4 Waiwatch (Bet Now: $11.00) is indeed the watch here. Very good sprinter resuming for Angela Davies who hasn’t raced since since early January at Gosford when winning his fourth race on the bounce. He trialled way back in September and went nicely but hasn’t been sighted since so fitness levels are unknown but he has class/quality.
Race 9. (17:40) Longines Golden Slipper March 24 Handicap (83) 1500m
14 Bastia (Bet Now: $3.90) for me. Kris Lees trained gelding who was hard in the market when resuming at Port Macquarie but I don’t think many people expected or anticipated a four length romp of his rivals given he was first up. He normally runs a touch flat second up, but off that resumption, and the upside he has, I can’t ignore.
7 Invicta (Bet Now: $12.00) is a quality gelding for the Ken Parker team who resumed with an okay effort behind Redouble before going to the Cessnock Cup where there was the thought he might need one more run but his class and a RT special got him home. Should be near peak fitness now and up to 1500m on the big track suits.
6 Magical Stance (Bet Now: $9.50) can be a tricky horse to follow with confidence but I think first up, he can run a bold race at odds. He did win impressively first up last prep and the way he trialled behind Dothraki suggests he has come back in really good order. Definite yard/market watch.
