Doomben is where Brisbane racing takes place this Saturday where it is Brisbane Handicap Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:22) Sky Racing Handicap 1200m
1 Blue Book (Bet Now: $2.70) is a very talented gelding for the Kelly Doughty team who is two for two to kick off his career. Bolted up over the 1110m here on debut before stepping up to 1200m and while he wasn’t as dynamic, he was still sharp in winning. Should lead again, he has that hard race experience…happy to be in his corner.
6 Bard Of Armagh (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Chris Munch trained colt who was at prohibitive odds when debuting under the lights at the Sunny Coast but he let the punters down by only managing a second. Was off the bit before the turn and seemingly was going nowhere but to his credit he stuck on when second to King Of The North. Willing to give him another look.
3 King Of The North (Bet Now: $10.00) was very impressive in winning on debut at the Sunny Coast. Led all the way under Mick Cahill and never really looked like getting beat from the home turn onwards. 1200m at this level is a different pain barrier but all you can do is win and he has the right racing pattern.
Race 2. (13:57) Www.BRC.com.au Handicap (70) 1350m
12 Pegapus (Bet Now: $4.80) on top. Matty Dunn trained mare who resumed with a closing third to Fox Force Five at the Gold Coast before going to Ipswich where she got back and was never really a winning chance until the final 150m where she absolutely savaged the line and surged hard to grab them on the peg. Will eat up a fast run 1350m here and third up, she should be near peak fitness.
13 Sornja (Bet Now: $8.00) is a mare who has come back in really good order for the O’Dea camp. Worked home strongly here fresh on Cup Day behind Inspired Estelle before going to the Sunny Coast where the margin was only narrow but I think she won with a bit in hand. Up to the 1350m looks ideal, she has upside and in the right stable.
Watch out for an eye catching resumption from 1 I Feel Good (Bet Now: $34.00). His best form is over further, but he did run very well early on in the prep last campaign in Victoria before coming to Queensland. Resumes with no trials, and draws wide, but he’ll get back, save ground and finish off. Doubt he wins, but one for multiples I’d suggest.
Race 3. (14:32) No Cracks Plumbing Handicap 1600m
4 Boom Boom Epic (Bet Now: $2.50) is a Toby Edmonds trained filly who should take some beating. She ran over the 1350m here a fortnight back where I thought she was huge in defeat. Wide no cover on speed for the trip yet fought on strongly, only to be nabbed near the peg by Magnufighter. Don’t think the mile will be no issue and she’s hard fit.
3 Miss Miao (Bet Now: $4.80) showed a lovely turn of foot to win first up at this track/distance before racing in the Magnufighter race where she didn’t have the greatest amount of luck and should have finished much closer when running fifth, beaten 2.5L. Off her two runs this prep, the rise to the mile is no worries.
2 Zafonic Dancer (Bet Now: $8.00) was six weeks between runs when racing in the Magnufighter race two weeks ago and the market knew he’d need the run because he was $5 to $8.50 and ran accordingly when finishing down the track. Expecting a sharp bounce back now he has the run under the belt and up to a more ideal trip.
Race 4. (15:08) Happy Birthday Monster UBET Origin Jockey Series Plate (Class 2) 1600m
7 Shadow Vision (Bet Now: $17.00) gets the nod for me. Progressive type for Kurt Goldman who ran over the mile on Goulburn CCup Day where Avdulla gave him every chance in the run but he just lacked the killer dash when third to Kurnel Jaxon. This looks a very winnable assignment and always respect the stable when they come north.
2 Chamalu (Bet Now: $2.50) is getting close to D-Day for mine. Blitzed them fresh at the Sunny Coast but has been a bit costly at his past couple, the latest at this track/distance when finishing sixth to Monasterio. Finds a very winnable race here and really, on his best form, he pretty much would put these away.
11 Cushion Pink (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Rob Heathcoate trained mare who looks as if she can a cheeky race. Not much luck first up at the Gold Coast behind the above average Fox Force Five before going to the 1350m at Ipswich where she looked the winner but was bloused late by Pegapus. Got really good form at the mile and appears well placed at odds.
Race 5. (15:48) Monier 'Top Cat' In Roofing Handicap (0MW) 1200m
19 Dapper One (Bet Now: $16.00) is a mare that is in a real purple patch at the moment for the Les Ross yard. She has been ridden a treat by Robbie Fradd her last two starts, both resulting in dominant wins. The latest coming last Wednesday at the Gold Coast where she got back to near last on the rail but Fradd waited for them to drop off, got the splits and burst through. She deserves a crack in town.
10 Ruthless Agent (Bet Now: $7.00) is the best horse in the race by a mile but he has a few loose screws upstairs and sometimes doesn’t put in, but his form is very good. He ran over 1400m three weeks back and worked home quite well late in the piece behind Redouble. Draws horribly, but he has the class factor and the right hoop aboard.
12 Gypsy Secret (Bet Now: $20.00) is another mare that deserves a crack at metro level given she has been racing very well in North Queensland, mainly on her home track at Rockhampton. Ran over 1400m there last time out where she was ridden on speed, against her normal pattern, but she showed really good fight and held off a quality horse in Deconstructed. Would love to see her ridden with a sit, because she can explode if cuddled.
Race 6. (16:28) Multi Systems Electrical UBET Origin Jockey Series Plate (Class 6) 2000m
4 Sheza Lily (Bet Now: $4.80) is one of the more in form horses racing in Queensland as it stands and she deserves a crack in town. Loved the way she attacked to win last time under the lights at the Sunny Coast over 1800m, powering clear with every stride, suggesting that the 2000m here will be no issue, and you can’t ignore the way she is going.
12 Kirini (Bet Now: $5.50) was okay here on Cup Day behind Three Points before racing over the 2200m here a fortnight back where she was given a sweet ride just off the pace but the winning move came on the turn when shoved into the clear, got the momentum up and dashed away to steal a winning margin. Has upside so she can definitely repeat the dose.
7 Zamex (Bet Now: $13.00) is the class horse engaged, but how well he is going, I’m not so sure about. Market said he’d run well in the Country Classic at Rosehill but he just got too far back for mine and he didn’t pull up 100% post race behind stablemate Miss Dubois. I think this is D-Day for him but on his 3YO form, he’d beat these.
Race 7. (17:08) Aqwa Constructions Just Now Quality 1350m
Happy to butter up on 10 Of The Day (Bet Now: $8.50 ODDS BOOST). Was quite keen on her chances when she resumed in the UBET Classic a fortnight back and I thought Toff Brooker rode the mare superbly. Just think the horse ran out of condition late and would improve when fourth to Notonyourlife. Goes very well second up and though unproven beyond 1200m, I think 1350m is no issue.
7 Our Beebee (Bet Now: $5.00 ODDS BOOST) is a Rex Lipp trained mare who comes through the UBET Classic two weeks ago and her effort was outstanding from the back. Loomed large to win the race but she just had no answers for the brilliant finishing burst produced by Notonyourlife. She is one mare who will eat up the 1350m and she should be hard fit now.
2 Denmagic…(Bet Now: $9.00 ODDS BOOST) dear me. She has been a bludger right throughout her career but gee she gets things to suit here. Just thought she got a bit too far back in the UBET Classic but her effort late and finale was strong behind Notonyourlife. Draws to be much closer in the run and gets Michael Rodd steering.
Race 8. (17:48) Green Options Racing Pty Ltd Brisbane Handicap 1600m
Can only see one scenario- 4 Crack Me Up (Bet Now: $2.70 ODDS BOOST) winning. Heading towards the Villiers and should get there via back to back wins, the second victory being this race. The last start win was in the Recognition where he was given such a sweet steer by McGillvray and from the home turn onwards, it was pretty painless. Only gets fitter, the rise to the mile a tick…only bad luck beats him.
12 Zahspeed (Bet Now: $11.00 ODDS BOOST) is an absolute beauty for the Toby Edmonds team. He toughed it out strongly to win at this track/distance two back before racing over 1800m at Rosehill where he ran along in front at a good speed and fought hard when third to Dagny. He has that hard 1800m run under the belt, he’s fit, in form and will give a sight.
1 Rudy (Bet Now: $20.00 ODDS BOOST) trialled up really well prior to resuming in the Recognition where I think he just got a pass mark behind Crack Me Up. It wasn’t a bad run, but by the same token, I did expect a bit more considering how he had trialled leading in. He is an absolute bomb when produced second up and is unbeaten in two runs at the track/distance.
Race 9. (18:25) Become A BRC Member Handicap (0MW) 1350m
5 Privlaka (Bet Now: $3.70) looks the one to beat. Rob Heathcoate trained gelding who ran over 1400m at the Sunny Coast last time out and absolutely walked in under McGillvray, controlling things beautifully from the front and giving nothing else a look in. His overall form just reads so well and I think he will be even better with cover.
14 Manaya (Bet Now: $4.00) is a really good mare for the Michael Costa team who ran over the 1200m here a fortnight back and tried very hard but had to settle for a close up third to the low flying Amanaat. She was three weeks between runs and 1350m-1200m so I think back up to the 1350m will be ideal and she draws to get a sweet run.
7 Londehero (Bet Now: $26.00) is a Matty Dunn trained seven year old that resumes here and I think he is a very interesting runner. Hasn’t raced since September 30 when working home well from the back to run fourth to Supreme Effort after getting a mile back. Goes well fresh and he has been given two trials, sharp ones at that, to prepare. Definite yard/market watch.
