The Brisbane Summer Carnival continues this Saturday at Doomben where it is Brisbane Handicap Day. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:22) Mount Franklin Handicap 1200m
1 Champagne Jet (Bet Now: $1.95) should win this. Toby Edmonds has a really nice filly on his hands here. Surprisingly unwanted in betting when debuting at the Sunny Coast but she ran right up to her trial and was too good for stablemate Betaima, who won the Sizzling last Saturday, so the form has been ticked. Just needs to run a strong 1200m to be winning.
5 Cabochon Lil (Bet Now: $3.90) is a daughter of Sebring for Stuart Kendrick who has had two career outings. She ran in the Sizzling last Saturday where she well back in a leader dominated affair but did make ground late and was far from disgraced behind Betaima. 1200m should be right up her alley, hard fit and has good race experience.
6 Oh Five Glory (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Team Hulbert trained daughter of Unencumbered who debuted three weeks back over 1050m here where she was a near rank outside but despite having no friends in the market, she ran quite well I thought when second to Neptune’s Star. Think the 1200m will be okay and the Unencumbered’s are absolutely flying at the moment.
Race 2. (13:57) Coca Cola Handicap (70) 1350m
I’ll take a chance on 13 Smug Satisfaction (Bet Now: $3.40), a mare that is low flying for Michael Costa. Ran over 1400m at the Gold Coast last Wednesday where she was backed as if unbeatable and that is how it panned out. She went forward, led and absolutely bolted in under Mick Cahill. Toughest test to date, but I’ll be surprised if she doesn’t measure up.
4 All Important (Bet Now: $7.50) is racing in great form this time in for the Tony Gollan stable. Ran over this track/distance a fortnight ago where he copped pressure in front and that just told on him late where he couldn’t finish it off when third to Cadogan. I think with cover and a more conservative steer, I think he’ll be far more effective.
1 Auerbach (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Chris Waller trained gelding who is in a real purple patch and comes to town off the back of a strong win at the midweeks at Ipswich when on speed and kicking hard in the straight under Lloyd to score. Was 1400-1200 that afternoon so back up to 1350m looks ideal and he’s in a winning frame of mind.
Race 3. (14:32) State Of Origin Plate (Class 3) 1600m
Keen on 12 Sofie’s Gold Class (Bet Now: $5.50). This mare was two months between runs when racing at this track/distance two weeks ago where she had to make a sustained run from the back and for the most part looked the winner but the hard fit Mishani Vaidra had the soft trip and finished too good. Now she has the run under the belt, I’m keen on her against these.
8 Al’s Kingdom (Bet Now: $3.80) steps up to the mile for Liam Birchley after leading all the way to win over 1400m at the Sunny Coast last time, dominating proceedings from the front and giving nothing else a look in. If he can stretch that brilliance to 1600m, he’s clearly going to take some beating despite the substantial rise in depth.
11 Kemsrey (Bet Now: $20.00) deserves another crack at metro level. Solid here two back on Cup Day behind Ponytales before going back to Ipswich for the win she was lifted over the line by Lloyd. The mile will be no issue for her, she’s got timing/upside, and the stable is absolutely flying at the moment so hard to ignore her despite the depth increase.
Race 4. (15:08) Cascade Handicap (1MW) 1350m
Hard to get away from the Toby Edmonds trained 11 Cadogan (Bet Now: $4.20). The punters stepped into him when racing at this track/distance a fortnight back and they were rewarded with a dominant win, aided by a fast speed, but he did chase and once he picked up, he drew clear and was impressive. Just has to repeat that effort to win this IMO.
9 I’ve Gotta Nel (Bet Now: $8.00) is racing so well this time in for Barry Lockwood. Ran over 1200m here two weeks ago where he was on speed all the way under Corey Bayliss and he gave a really good kick in the straight but couldn’t quite hold off Bold Chance. 1350m the obvious query, but if he gets on speed without spending the petrol tickets, he’ll take some beating.
3 Time To Torque (Bet Now: $11.00) is five weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where he got a mile off them in the run but finished off okay behind the then in form Tawfiq Boy. Seems to be a really good horse on the fresh side and the Beaudesert trial win could well be the confidence boost he needs to measure up on race day.
Race 5. (15:48) Eagle Way Stayers Heat 2000m
Just have to butter up on 4 Trusty Lad (Bet Now: $3.80). Very unlucky first up over the 1350m here behind Plumaro before being given three weeks off and racing over the mile where he did plenty wrong but was very good late behind Ceol Na Mara. 2000m, upside…he looks the one to beat, clearly. Just hoping he can put it all together.
6 Ceol Na Mara (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Chris Munce trained filly who had specking at longer odds in the mile race from two weeks ago here and despite some unlucky runs in behind, credit to her. She was on speed, out of trouble, doing everything right and on the line she was holding those around her. If she can stretch that to 2000m, clearly the horse to beat.
3 Pierre Bizel (Bet Now: $9.50) is an interesting runner. Stuart Kendrick trains this son of Pierro, who is 2/2 this time in, both wins have come at the Sunny Coast when dominating on speed. The latest came over the mile where he was most impressive and the time he ran was okay relative to the meeting. Harder here, but looks a nice prospect.
Race 6. (16:28) State Of Origin Plate (Class 6) 2000m
3 Savwell (Bet Now: $4.60) is the horse I’m on guard with. I think he’s one of the hardest to beat if he brought his best but the two runs this time in have been somewhat inconclusive. Okay resumption behind Tawfiq Boy before racing at the mile where he didn’t have much luck but didn’t exactly ping when clear behind El Campeador. Up in trip/down in depth may be the key.
6 Galtero (Bet Now: $3.50) is five weeks between runs for the Tony Gollan stable since racing at this track/distance where he was a hard favourite but just copped too much pressure in front and tired late when fifth to Estikhraaj, an in form Waller stayer. I think with cover, he’ll be more effective and ability wise, he’s the best horse in the race.
Andrew Adkins rode 8 Most Exalted (Bet Now: $8.00) an absolute treat last time in the Country Classic at Rosehill over 2000m and at the 300m, he looked the winner. First look at the trip this prep, I think he just died on the turn. Got the run under the belt now, so hopefully will be stronger at the end and he should get a lovely run from the draw with Brad Stewart aboard.
Race 7. (17:08) Brisbane Handicap 1600m
4 Prioritise (Bet Now: $3.30) looks just about the good thing on the program. This horse was once known as a non winner but Steve Tregea has really turned his form around, winning four on the bounce before being freshened up and running in the Recognition a fortnight ago where he was good from the back behind stablemate Niccanova. 3/3 at the mile, good second up record, has upside, keen.
6 Sold For Song (Bet Now: $6.00) is a bit of a non winner but I thought her Recognition effort was full of merit. She got a mile out of her ground and never really looked likely but I thought her last 100m when clear and attacking the line was strong. Has run well at the mile before and if she is within striking range on the turn, she’s good enough. Has she got that wining endeavour still?
The market push for 2 Cantbuybetter (Bet Now: $8.00) should be seriously respected because it started on Wednesday as soon as the markets opened and it’s been constant. His run in the Recognition wasn’t the best run from the race, but it was still very good given he did work in the run from the back yet still made ground. Lloyd is booked to steer and he does ride the horse very well.
Race 8. (17:50) Just Now Quality 1350m
If they overdo it in front, 10 Plumaro (Bet Now: $10.00) is the pony to look out for late. Jag finally got her to the outside when racing over 1350m here two weeks ago and the result was an outstanding win. Was nominated for 1200m last week but has been saved for this. She’ll concede a start but she’ll produce the best late splits by far. A threat if they go hard in front.
6 Femme Fireball (Bet Now: $3.90) is an absolute beauty and deserves another crack at some blacktype. Loved the way she attacked the line to win over this track/distance three weeks, just getting the better of Oink. Getting the better of Oink isn’t a hard task but the two wins prior were outstanding and now she’s back to mares grade.
7 Cellargirl (Bet Now: $18.00) is the unknown. Kelly Schweida trains this mare and we know that at her best, she’s certainly capable of beating these. Hasn’t raced since Glenlogan Park during the Winter Carnival when down the track behind Pedrena. Was heading to the Tatts Tiara but stable pulled the pin. Back now and her trial behind Curdled was solid enough. She’ll get back and launch late.
Race 9. (18:25) Sprite Handicap (0MW) 1200m
He’s getting to last chance territory is 3 Awesome Pluck (Bet Now: $3.50) but normal luck and he’ll be beating these. I thought his effort last time over 1350m here was enormous, doing a power of work from the wide gate to land on speed and he gave a good kick in the straight but Cadogan proved too good. If he can get a more economical run, he’ll be winning.
6 Ahwahneechee (Bet Now: $5.00) deserves another crack at Saturday grade. He ran over 1100m at Toowoomba last time where he was afforded the run of the race off the pace before angling into the clear and despite being challenged, class came to the fore and he edged away late. 1200m the query, but hard to knock a horse going as well as he is.
I think the handle bars will well and truly be down when it comes to Corey Brown aboard 13 Bombarding (Bet Now: $9.00). Her best chance of winning is of she leads so expect fireworks early. David Pfieffer trains this mare, who has been just fair in two runs back from a spell, but each race has carried far more depth than what she faces here and her recent tick over trial was very good, plus Corey rides her better than most.
