A golden ticket into the Cox Plate awaits the winner of the Group ll Feehan Stakes (1600m) this Saturday at Moonee Valley and that is the drawcard for what looks a fab day of racing. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Feehan Stakes π: View the Feehan Stakes Field
Race 1. (12:30) Ladbrokes Odds Boost Exotics Handicap 1500m
2 The Holy One (Bet Now: $3.10 TOP ODDS) looks a progressive galloper for the Busuttin/Young stable and confident he can measure up. Spanked them to win his maiden two back at Echuca before going to Sandown when doing a bit of work out wide in the run before being clicked up by Meech and the colt put them away impressively to record another win. Like the way he’s going about it and he can measure up.
5 Olympic Oath (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) is an interesting one from a Derby perspective. He had two runs in the Winter to start his career. Loved the way he found the line on debut at Bendigo before working hard for the maiden win at Ballarat on the Synthetic but class got him home. Given a little break with the Derby in mind and he does have residual fitness.
I think up to 1500m will suit 6 Skiddaw (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS). He comes through the McKenzie Stakes (1200m) from two weeks ago here where they were just too sharp for him but I thought he was solid enough in defeat behind impressive winner Condo’s Express. There is a bit of depth to this field, but not as much as last start, and I think the extra 300m will be up his alley.
Race 2. (13:05) 1300 Australia Handicap 1600m
3 Five Kingdom (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) for me. The Hayes/Dabernig team trains this guy, who steps up to the mile but drops a bit in depth after racing over 1400m three weeks ago at Caulfield where he wasn’t really suited the by the tempo set by the eventual winner Age Of Chivalry, but loved the way he found the line late behind that runner, who franked the form last Saturday. One of the hardest to beat.
6 Laure Me In (Bet Now: $4.60 TOP ODDS) had been going poorly this prep but he was well supported when racing at this track/distance two weeks ago and the bets were nearly landed, but he was caught wide for the trip and that cost him the race when fourth to Junipal. Draws much better, gets the claim for Kersley…if he runs up to last start, he’s in the mix here for sure.
13 Silent Roar (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) looks a definite improver. Team Hawkes trains this mare, who resumed over 1400m in the Age Of Chivalry race mentioned above where she was off the speed and tried hard but just lacked the turn of foot to match it with them late. Like her dropping back to 78 grade and I think she can get across from the gate and sit near the speed without doing too much work.
Race 3. (13:40) Powerflo Solutions Handicap 2040m
Have to give 5 Al Galayel (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) another look. He was really well tried when racing at this track/distance two weeks ago but just got into a sticky spot near the back and from there, he was just never in the hunt in a total forgive behind Kentucky Breeze. Reckon he’s starting to find his best form Al Galayel and with better luck this time around, he can win.
Hard to knock the way 6 Kentucky Breeze (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS) is racing at the moment. Levi Kavanagh has done a fab job with this guy. He looked a very promising 3YO, but then lost his way for a period of time, but this prep, he’s come back and put it all together, the last start seeing him win at this track/distance under a lovely steer from Jamie Kah. Hard to beat once again.
Up in trip should suit 1 Duretto (Bet Now: $41.00 TOP ODDS). Just found the 1600m a bit sharp when resuming three weeks ago at Caulfield when down the track behind Guizot, his first run since placing in the Caulfield Cup last year. He has got class on his side and is now getting out to a more ideal trip, so if he’s heading down the Cups path again, you’d like to see some improvement from first up.
Race 4. (14:15) PFD Food Services Handicap 1200m
Not sure what to make of the first up run of 12 Tofane (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS). Was the 1000m on a shifty track a bit much for her? Perhaps. All I know is that from a punting perspective, she was most disappointing, but you only have to go back to her form in the Autumn and some of her efforts…they were that of a Stakes winner in waiting, so have to give her another chance.
9 Victory Kingdom (Bet Now: $4.60 TOP ODDS) is popular with most given her excellent first up run at Caulfield behind Grey Shadow where she did a power of work on speed and was entitled to drop away but kept finding and was very good in defeat when third. Provided she has taken no harm from that, she looks hard to beat. My knock is that the stable are having this run like they did earlier in the year when horses hard in the market are struggling to perform well.
There was a bit to like about the first up win of 7 Extreme Bliss (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) at Cranbourne at the midweeks recently. Had trialled up well but was a notable drifter in betting late at Cranbourne, and she paraded like she would need the run, but after a little struggle with Shir, she put that horse away and was dominant late. Has run well in town before so she can measure up.
Race 5. (14:50) Inglis Atlantic Jewel Stakes 1200m
Keen on 2 Pin Sec (Bet Now: $8.00) running well. This filly resumed in the Quezette where she got back to near last in the run over an unsuitable trip and loved the way she found the line late behind Exhilarates. I think 1400m+ is when Pin Sec will come into her own, but if she can take advantage of the gate and hold a spot just off the speed, she’ll take some holding out.
Can 7 Sassy Salitage (Bet Now: $4.00) measure up? She’s 2/2 to start her career for Greg Eurell, winning nicely at the Pakenham Synthetic on debut before going to this track/distance two weeks ago when sitting on speed and when asked for an effort by Ben Allen, she showed good change up speed and was impressive to the line. Harder here, but I think she’ll run well.
Giving respect to 3 Cheer Leader (Bet Now: $9.00). She was just too bad to be true first up in the Quezette behind Exhilarates. Lane said post race her action wasn’t 100%, but the vet found an irregular heart beat, so clear excuses there. Jumped out last Friday at Flemington and ran one of the quicker times of the morning under no pressure, and she’s a Stakes winner at this track/distance, so she’s very likeable.
Race 6. (15:30) Strathmore Community Bendigo Bank Stakes 1200m
Quite keen to see how 6 Deprive (Bet Now: $3.70) goes. James Cummings has placed this horse perfectly in recent times, albeit the Show County two weeks ago had serious depth to it. He was there to be beaten late but he clung on and just got the verdict over Trope in a very deceptive finish. He’s a winner and knows where the post is, which is such a good attribute to have.
1200m should suit 2 Spirit Of Valor (Bet Now: $15.00). He was well fancied first up in the Carlyon here two weeks ago but just found the five furlongs too sharp in a forgive run I think behind Assertive Approach. Did place in the Manikato at this track/distance in the Spring, so have to give him another chance because his best is clearly good enough to beat these.
1200m is short of his best but I think 4 Fastnet Tempest (Bet Now: $71.00) can run a bold race here fresh. He was a bit of an enigma at one stage but put it together at the end of the prep last time in, winning his past two and I’m always a fan of horses that got out for a spell in winning form. Recent Flemington jumpout was quite good and with luck, he could surprise at odds.
Race 7. (16:10) Mittys McEwen Stakes 1000m
Pretty keen here on the David Pfieffer trained 10 Prophet’s Thumb (Bet Now: $8.00), who resumes. This mare has an awful racing pattern, so with that she’ll receive more bad luck than good, but no denying she has talent. I say she has an awful pattern, but she did sit in the 1/1 in her trial win at Rosehill and when clicked up by Bossy, that customary brilliant turn of foot was there. With all this speed engaged, can see her sitting back and having last look.
The race does set up ideally for 3 Bons Away (Bet Now: $4.60) to blouse these given the early pressure engaged. He resumed in the Carlyon at this track/distance two weeks ago where he was back on the rail near last and the race just set up for Assertive Approach to lead/win, which he did, but Bons Away wins in another stride. More pressure in front, he’ll get his chance.
8 Miss Leonidas (Bet Now: $8.50) is a talented mare for Shaun Dwyer that resumes. I think this is about her level, as we saw in the Autumn where she was able to win the Bel Esprit at Caulfield. Has had a nice spell and has been tuned up for her return with a couple of jumpouts at Bendigo, and while she has been up against provincial class horses, she has looked well.
Race 8. (16:50) Ladbrokes Feehan Stakes 1600m
14 The Chosen One (Bet Now: $12.00) on top. The Baker/Forsman have already flexed their muscles via Quick Thinker last Saturday and I think this above average four year old can measure up. He had a fab Autumn prep, highlighted by a gutsy fourth in the Australian Derby, then won the Frank Packer before being spelled. Two trials in NZ have been good and stable rarely get it wrong when they bring one over.
6 Fifty Stars (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained galloper who had trialled well enough prior to resuming in the PB Lawrence where he was solid enough in defeat behind Mystic Journey without jumping up and down. He looks better suited at the mile and has the run under the belt, which should hold him in good stead against most of these who may need the run.
Enormous respect to 8 Surprise Baby (Bet Now: $10.00). A half decent steer and he’s assured a Melbourne Cup start by winning the Andrew Ramsden, instead finishing a narrow second to Steel Prince. Likely heads towards the Bart Cummings to get into the Cup, so may need this run, but gee I was taken by his recent jumpout win at Stawell, running sub 22 for the final 400m without being fully extended. He’ll give this a shake.
Race 9. (17:30) Drummond Golf Handicap 1600m
Happy to have something on 9 Strike Force (Bet Now: $16.00). He was well specked when racing over 1500m here two weeks ago but was just a fraction slow to begin and I think it clearly cost him a place when fourth to Romancer. He races when on speed and rolling, so if that can eventuate here, up to the mile, I think he’ll be quite effective and run a positive race at odds.
12 Lucky For All (Bet Now: $6.00) is a massive query. Formerly with Darren Weir, he’s having his first run for the Price/Kent stable. Hasn’t raced since the Ballarat Cup in November when down the track on a very testing track behind then stablemate Kiwia. He’s had a couple of trials in readiness for his return and though 1600m is short of his best, he has class/quality.
7 Curragh (Bet Now: $12.00) has been very good this time in. Tough winner at Rosehill two back before going to the Coffs Harbour Cup when trying hard from off the speed but Love Shack Baby kicked too strongly in the run to the line and held on, helped by the tempo not being strong, which didn’t help Curragh, so his run had plenty of merit in it. Hard to beat here with fitness on his side.
