Feature racing returns to Randwick this Saturday where it is Missile Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Missile Stakes π: View the Field and Odds for the Missile Stakes
Race 1. (11:15) Clubsnsw Western Metro. (bm72) 1400m
I want to give 3 Black Bolt (Bet Now:Β $6.50 TOP ODDS) another chance. Maher/Eustace trained gelding that I was quite keen on at Rosehill two weeks ago but he was quite flat and seemingly had every chance behind Yiyi in a plain effort. The resumption at Hawkesbury suggested he’s in for a fruitful prep so not sacking off one poor run.
1 Vreneli (Bet Now:Β $4.60 TOP ODDS) is a WaterBott trained four year old that will put himself on speed and try hard. That was the case when racing here two weeks ago and he gave a solid kick. Just couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Tamerlane. Gets Nash to steer, and we know he is a gun on front runners.
8 Vianello (Bet Now:Β $7.00 TOP ODDS) has only won the one race, which came at 900m at Newcastle, but she is racing as if 1400m will suit. Ran over 1200m at Rosehill a fortnight back and worked home with purpose from near last in the run when fourth to Silent Impact. If she can sit a pair or two closer in the run, she’ll be dangerous.
Race 2. (11:50) Cliff Clare (bm78) 2400m
Each way, I don’t think you can go wrong backing 5 Araboilini (Bet Now:Β $7.50 TOP ODDS). He’ll likely be leading, giving cheek and is a tough, honest conveyance. That is what we saw at Rosehill two weeks ago and for a fair chunk of the race, he looked the winner, but just felt the pinch when a close up third. He’ll run such a positive race.
2 Spencer (Bet Now:Β $8.00 TOP ODDS) comes through the No Compromise race from a fortnight back at Rosehill. He landed outside the speed but was a bit keen in the run and I reckon that took something away from his finale behind the Waller stayer. If he can relax in the run, I think he’ll be dangerous.
4 Terwilliker (Bet Now:Β $4.80 TOP ODDS) is racing in solid form at the moment for Anthony Cummings and isn’t far off a win. Ran over 2400m on the Kenso track here last Wednesday when on speed and he gave a decent kick under Bossy, but couldn’t quite finish it off when second to Shuffle Up. Not sure he wins, but one for multiples.
Race 3. (12:25) Tab Highway Plate (c3) 1800m
15 Dream Runner (Bet Now:Β $2.35 TOP ODDS) looks ready to win to my eye. Keith Dryden gelding that has contested Highways his past couple, the latest being at Rosehill two weeks ago when just missing out on the win when second to So Say You. Racing as if he’ll be fine at 1800m and has upside to come.
9 Zoo Station (Bet Now:Β $7.50 TOP ODDS) has been racing 1400m-1500m all prep, so I think now seems an ideal time to step up in trip. Latest run came a fortnight back over the 1500m at Rosehill in a Highway and finished off her race quite nicely behind So Say You. She just needs to show early speed. If she does, she’s hard to beat.
8 Birdonawinningpost (Bet Now:Β $7.50 TOP ODDS) is a Highway winner at this track/distance so you’d say this is a plain from Will Freedman to have her peaking third up. Ridden warm fresh and tired late. Then ridden cold at Rosehill and worked home well without threatening. Hard fit now, up to a suitable trip, she gets her chance.
Race 4. (13:00) Billy Camer (bm78) 1500m
9 Loveplanet (Bet Now:Β $2.90 TOP ODDS) is a progressive Chris Waller galloper that makes his NSW debut. His four career outings to date have come in Victoria and he has made a decent impression racing in that part of the world, winning three of four. Thought he trialled up really well last week at Rosehill. Just whether he needs this run to tune up for something longer, not sure, but he has the engine under the hood to take this out.
I think the talk of 2 Great House (Bet Now:Β $6.50 TOP ODDS) being a Spring Carnival horse needs to stop. He’s not up to that level. This is his level, and I’d say potentially a country cup eg Port Macquarie Cup. He’s racing well without winning, the latest run being a second to the very much in form Steely three weeks back. Hard to beat against this lot.
5 Papal Warrior (Bet Now:Β $10.00 TOP ODDS) should be suited back to 1500m. He ran over the mile here a few weeks back and I thought he was there to win when presented, but couldn’t finish it off and slugged it out when third to Criminal Code. Back to 1500m, a hard fit/in form horse, he has to be respected.
Race 5. (13:35) Midway (bm72) 1800m
10 Savvy Crown (Bet Now:Β $5.50) is flying for Jason Deamer and I’m actually pretty keen on his chances here. Bit of quality about his first up win at Muswellbrook. He then went to the Midway at Rosehill and closed off with real purpose behind Casino Mondial. He’ll eat up 1800m, hard fit now, in form…I think he’s one of the better bets on the card.
1 Casino Mondial (Bet Now:Β $7.50) was a surprise winner of the Midway two weeks back at Rosehill. He was big odds given he was first up off one soft trial but a good tempo and a masterclass from Bowman saw the gelding drive through hard late to nab them. You’d like to think there is upside to come, so he rates highly as a key chance.
9 Bazooka (Bet Now:Β $5.50) is teasing to win one. David Payne trained four year old that doesn’t have the best of winning strike rates but is an honest type that is rarely far away from the thick end of the prize. He chased hard two weeks ago at Rosehill but was just no match for Yiyi, who spanked them. Could I back him to win with confidence? No, but he’ll be around the mark.
Race 6. (14:15) Ray Selkrig (bm78) 1200m
4 More Prophets (Bet Now:Β $4.40) on top for me. John Thompson trains this former David Pfieffer trained mare, who certainly has the engine to be quite explosive here. Hasn’t raced since May 29 here when working home strongly behind Nicci’s Fling. Just one soft trial to get ready but she has an electric finale on her when cuddled.
5 Turnstyle (Bet Now:Β $6.00) is a Bjorn Baker trained mare that will put herself on speed and give her all. That was the case a fortnight back at Rosehill and for the most part, she looked the winner, but was nabbed late by Starla. Just needs to stretch her brilliance out to 1200m and she’s the likely winner. That is the query though.
1 Misteed (Bet Now:Β $23.00) deserves another chance. Kim Waugh trained mare that has had a couple of runs for the camp. Resumed with a narrow second here before going to Rosehill where she continued her normal pattern of a second up flat run. Third up bounce back is on the cards.
Race 7. (14:55) Missile Stakes 1200m
7 Fasika (Bet Now:Β $2.70) is a high class mare for Joe Pride that resumes and I think she can resume a winner. She won the Sapphire at this track/distance first up last prep during the Championships and it’s clear that she saves her best for Randwick. Bomb fresh record, loved her recent Warwick Farm trial, she can dominate from the front and prove hard to get past.
1 Kolding (Bet Now:Β $4.20) is the class runner of the field and that will carry him a long way. Ended a mixed Autumn prep on a high when taking out the All Aged, helped by a 12/10 from Avdulla. He’s a Randwick dry track horse, so he gets that set up here and can pull out a decent run fresh.
2 Viridine (Bet Now:Β $7.00) is the hard fit race horse for James Cummings that is a knockout chance if indeed that race fitness comes to the fore. His recent efforts have come at Caulfield, the latest run being two weeks back in the Bletchingly when back and working home well late behind Sansom. If this does come to race fitness, he has to be respected.
Race 8. (15:35) The Rosebud 1100m
I am anticipating a big first up run from 1 Paulele (Bet Now:Β $6.50). James Cummings trained colt that IMO, I don’t see as a Golden Rose/Guineas horse. I think he’s a sprinter and off the trials, I think he has been trained that way, He absolutely jogged in a recent Hawkesbury trial where J Mac didn’t sneeze on him. He’s ready to rock and roll I’d suggest.
3 Remaruqe (Bet Now:Β $3.30) does look the safe option via the draw. Quality colt for Team Hawkes that resumes after a two run Autumn prep to start his career. Debuted with a win at Rosehill before going to the Todman when far from disgraced behind Anamoe. Trials leading in have been electric and only has to hold a forward spot from the draw to prove hard to beat.
Most would agree that the three best colts are Anamoe, Stay Inside and Artorius. Is 2 Mazu (Bet Now:Β $9.50) ready to join that company? He had a very good first prep in the Autumn. Arguably should have won the Pago Pago and potentially could have given the Slipper a shake. Spelled, trialled up very well and has class.
Race 9. (16:15) Little Wings (bm78) 1100m
Happy to have a throw at the stumps in the shape of 11 Golly I’m Lucky (Bet Now:Β $34.00), who resumes for Terry Robinson. He hasn’t raced since Kembla Grange Classic Day back in March when a closing second after getting a mile back in the run. Resumes without a public trial, but can run well fresh and his form, if you look deep enough, gee it reads well for a 78.
4 Fastconi (Bet Now:Β $5.50) hasn’t really put a foot wrong this time in and commands respect. Lovely rail hugging steer from Avdulla saw him bolt up here three weeks back. He looked in a bit of trouble but once the split came, away he went and he was dominant. Now he has that Saturday win on the board, he could well go on with it.
3 Enfleurage (Bet Now:Β $4.60) is a quality mare for James Cummings that resumes. She hasn’t raced since June 2020, so she missed her entire four year old season. Showed good promise when last in work and has had three trials to prepare for her return, so the grounding is there to suggest she’s ready to go, but watch the market.
Race 10. (16:55) Atc Thank You Jockeys (bm78) 1300m
11 Kingshier (Bet Now:Β $3.80) is a son of Kingman for Team Hawkes that resumes. Hasn’t raced since September 23 at Canterbury when working home strongly from off the speed behind Kirwan’s Lane, who has established himself to be a Saturday class horse. Trials to get ready have been strong, so watch the market.
1 Academy (Bet Now:Β $4.20) is a quality animal for Mark Newnham that resumes. Hasn’t raced since April 3 when running last behind Starspangledrodeo, but looked a tired horse after a couple of hard runs. Usually races well on the fresh side and has trialled well leading in.
3 Handspun (Bet Now:Β $8.50) has returned in good order for James Cummings. Resumed over 1000m here three weeks ago and worked home quite well from the back when third to the very much in form Our Bellagio Miss. Like her up in trip and can sit closer in the run to be dangerous.
