Toowoomba will host their biggest race day this Saturday where it is Weetwood Handicap Day. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:17) Spirit Of Boom Handicap 1100m
6 Sienna Rose (Bet Now: $19.00) is a More Than Ready filly resuming for the Steve O’Dea camp. She had two runs in the Spring and was okay but clearly not ready and would improve with the prep under the belt. That looks to the case if her two trials are any indicator. I like what I have seen from her and I think she’ll sprint well fresh.
2 Shamurt (Bet Now: $2.85) is a Murtajill filly for the Tony Gollan team who was heavily backed when debuting at Doomben a fortnight back and the punters knew what they were doing as she sat on speed and showed really good grit in the straight to cling on and get the win. On the form guide it’ll say $3.1-$4.2 flucs but $7+ was on offer on Wednesday. Won’t be starting that here and she’ll take some beating.
11 Zouling (Bet Now: $17.00) is a Chris Waller trained youngster who debuted at the Doomben midweeks on March 21 on an absolute bog and he just didn’t let down at all on the surface behind Rains Aplenty. Looked sharp in the trials leading in so I’m prepared to give him another look back on top of the surface.
Race 2. (12:52) A&R Refrigeration Plate (Class 3) 2000m
On guard with 3 Great Glen (Bet Now: $3.50), a Chris Waller trained stayer who has been freshened up and is making his Queensland debut. Hasn’t raced for over a month but a change of stable life, freshened up, back to 2000m, he could easily bounce back and fire here. 2000m short of his best, but quality wise, he’s up to these.
1 High Wind (Bet Now: $9.00) is three weeks between runs for the Tony Gollan camp since racing over 2200m at the Gold Coast where he sat near the speed and fought on okay without threatening behind Exoteric. Drops big time in depth here, and though drawn awkwardly, he certainly has the class to go close to winning.
2 Mustarrid (Bet Now: $10.00) is on the seven day back up for the Ben Currie team after racing last week at Ipswich where he attempted to lead all the way on the shifty track and he didn’t let down at all behind Two For The Road in a most disappointing effort. Better on top of the ground and loves racing on his home track.
Race 3. (13:27) AG Rigging Handicap (75) 1300m
Looks an ideal race for 12 Another Dollar (Bet Now: $2.50), who is nearly a couple of months between runs since racing over the Doomben mile where she was set an impossible task from the back on a leaders track yet still wound up with purpose behind Epic Rant. Fresh at 1300m looks ideal and she does have a touch of quality.
9 Hold On (Bet Now: $4.50) rises significantly in grade and depth but she has earned a crack after stringing together four wins this time in, the latest coming three weeks back over 1200m here when finishing off strongly from off the pace to score. Up to 1300m second up looks ideal, on her home track, and draws the paint.
4 Bold Gypsy (Bet Now: $16.00) is a Garnett Taylor trained mare who hasn’t raced for five weeks since running a shocker over the 1350m at Doomben when tailing off last behind Don’t Tell Mama. Run was too bad to be true and she has since trialled at the Sunny Coast where she looked much better. On her best form, she’s right in this.
Race 4. (14:02) K&R Plumbing Supplies (80) 1625m
10 Givus A Cuddle (Bet Now: $5.50) looks very well placed to my eye from the Ben Currie team. Heavily backed to win two back at Doomben before going to Gatton where she was all the rage but just copped a bit too much pressure in front and was outgunned late by Benico’s Prince. Back on her home track, I’ll give her another chance.
3 Estikhraaj (Bet Now: $5.00) looks to be going well enough for Chris Waller to figure somewhere in the finish here. He ran over 1800m at the Gold Coast three weeks back and worked home okay but never really looked like a winning threat when fourth to Doubt Defying. 1600m is short of his ideal, but if they go quick, he’s the one to beat.
11 General Cos (Bet Now: $19.00) is a Neville Saunders trained galloper who is racing in career best form. Had backing when racing over 1400m at the Gold Coast a fortnight back and gee he let down with real purpose late to nab Johnny Be Quick right on the peg. Tick over trial here on Tuesday was nice work and up to the mile no issue.
Race 5. (14:42) Toowoomba Plastics Plate (Class 6) 1100m
2 Publishing Power (Bet Now: $2.40) is an absolute beauty for the Ben Currie team and certainly doesn’t look out of place here. He ran behind the speed demon Mr Marbellouz a fortnight back at Doomben and tried hard but the bias suited those near the lead/rail and the eventual winner was there. Unbeaten in three runs here and there looks to be good speed, so he’ll get his chance.
12 Whycatchim (Bet Now: $19.00) is a Ben Currie trained gelding who is racing really well at the moment but just needs to get a confidence builder. Hasn’t been far away at his past three outings, but has found one or two better on the day, the latest over 900m at the Gold Coast three weeks back. Back up to 1100m on his home track looks ideal.
10 Tailevent (Bet Now: $61.00) won this race last year and he comes here with relatively fresh legs for Bruce Hill. Resumed over 1200m at Doomben a fortnight ago and just found Mr Marbellouz too nippy. Looks to be a stack of speed engaged so look for him to get back and charge home, like he did last year when winning the race.
Race 6. (15:22) Toowoomba Guineas 1625m
1 Zofonic Dancer (Bet Now: $1.90) is a really smart three year old for the Rob Heathcoate stable who should lap up the mile here. Resumed over the 1350m at Doomben a couple of weeks back and worked home with real purpose late in the piece behind stablemate Trommelschlagen. Unbeaten in two runs at the mile and has a stack more upside than most.
2 Trommelschlagen (Bet Now: $7.50) won that race mentioned above and I think you can thank the ride from Cormack for the win. The horse normally sits back in the ruck but Cormack took advantage of the gate to have him near the speed and that is what won the race. Up to the mile no issue and is a definite threat.
8 Red Phantom (Bet Now: $41.00) was quite soft in the market when resuming over 1400m at the Sunny Coast on March 25 and the market got it right. Didn’t win but he closed off okay from an impossible position in the run. His record at the mile and beyond is very good and he will be strong late if they go keen in front.
Race 7. (16:02) Toowoomba Cup 2000m
Happy to give 13 Stanley (Bet Now: $23.00) another look. The quick rise to 2000m from the mile in the space of a week a fortnight ago probably went against him in the end but in saying that, he was heavily backed to win the race. Loomed large to win but just couldn’t finish it off, settling for fourth to First Crush. Now has the hard 2000m run under the belt, he should be stronger.
7 Exoteric (Bet Now: $6.50) is one I want to include. The ride from Magorrigan to get this horse home a few weeks back at the Gold Coast was an absolute peach. Got off the rail early, got going a fair way from home, built up momentum and that is what won the race. Xebec bolted up last Saturday to frank the form, and he will be strong.
2 Morendi (Bet Now: $7.50) is just an absolute beauty for the Darryl McCabe team. He just doesn’t know how to run a bad race. He comes through the First Crush race at Doomben two weeks ago and you could easily make a case that he should have won. Hard 2000m here looks ideal, finally gets weight relief and he’ll be strong late.
Race 8. (16:42) Weetwood Handicap 1200m
I think this race is all about 10 Zumbelina (Bet Now: $12.00) and where she is at, because if she is anywhere near right, she’ll go close. Placed at the Gold Coast (Metro) before being freshened up and heading back to Sydney where she was fair in the Triscay before failing behind Osborne Bulls. Drops miles in depth here. Just not sure where she is at, so market/yard will be the guide.
It’s hard to ignore what 13 Amanaat (Bet Now: $3.50) has done since joining the Ben Currie. He was okay when racing in Victoria for the Hayes/Dabernig team but he has gone to a new level since coming north, winning a stack of races and is now a leading contender in a blacktype race. Gutsy resuming win a fortnight back at Doomben when hugging the inside and finishing best. He’ll look the winner at some stage.
4 Raido (Bet Now: $11.00) was a notable drifter in betting when racing in the Goldmarket three weeks back at the Gold Coast but due to the hectic tempo in front, it really played into his hands and he unleashed a brilliant finishing burst to grab them and win. Fast run 1200m races look his go and he’ll get another one here.
Race 9. (17:17) Wimmers Premium Soft Drinks Handicap (75) 1300m
3 Bergerac (Bet Now: $3.30) on top for me. Steve Tregea trains this son of Drumbeats who won his first two races this time in before going to Doomben three weeks back where he was near last and wide throughout on a day where leaders were advantaged behind Karakabeel. Unbeaten on his home track and no doubt stable will have him primed.
9 Real Ego (Bet Now: $9.00) looks a definite threat. Just forget he went around four weeks back at Doomben on the bog behind Inspired Estelle. Didn’t let down on it at all. Been freshened up, back on his home track, firm ground, and go back three starts he wasn’t far off Bergerac, and gets a little weight pull.
13 Brave Dazzler (Bet Now: $20.00) hasn’t won since Adam met Eve but gee he is going well. He ran over 1200m at the Sunny Coast last time out where he got back off a slow speed but worked home really well I thought behind the in form Cool Sequence, who ran well on Wednesday, so the form reads okay. Loves his home track and he’ll be strong late.
