Standalone Saturday racing in Victoria continues this Saturday at Pakenham where it is Pakenham Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Pakenham Cup 🏆: View the Field for the Pakenham Cup
Race 1. (12:55) John Duff & Co (bm70) 1000m
I’ll go the way of 10 That Girl (Bet Now: $2.45 TOP ODDS), a Sizzling filly for Phillip Stokes that is first up. She’s had just the one career outing, which came at Morphettville back on June 22 when spanking them in a 2YO race, beating Garner, who of course has gone right on with it since and is one of the best three year olds in Adelaide, so that form reads so well, and loved the way she went in a recent Moe jumpout.
4 Champagne Boom (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) is a talented daughter of Spirit Of Boom for the Hayes/Dabernig team that resumes, having not raced since July 13 at Caulfield when midfield behind Can’t Be Done in a 2YO race where she wasn’t 100% happy on the wet track. Been given a really good break with the Magic Millions in mind and recent jumpouts have been quite good.
Interesting to see how 3 Parmie (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) resumes. This filly is trained by Ellerton/Zahra and resumes after putting together a couple of pretty good wins during the Winter after showing good early promise. Been given a good break and her recent jumpout was pretty solid to the eye, but given 1000m is short of her best, watch the market and see what it does.
Race 2. (13:30) Momentum Gaming (bm70) 1600m
2 Write Your Name (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS) has come back in super order for Archie Alexander. Landed some good bets to win first up on Bendigo Cup Day before racing over 1400m at Sandown when sitting off a decent speed set by Vigere and tried hard to get past that horse, but Meech rated it to perfection in front and kicked strongly, but this guy was far from disgraced. Like him up to the mile.
7 Eureka Street (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) has more to give this prep for for Mick Kent given this will be his third run back from a 70 week spell. He last ran at Sandown when chasing a good speed and sticking on pretty well in defeat I thought behind Kardashing. I think he’ll be more effective with a conservative steer and there does appear to be good speed engaged, so he’ll get his chance.
6 Cape Richards (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is a son of Hinchinbrook for the Patrick Payne team that resumes. This guy was a real money muncher towards the end of last prep. He was running well, was close up, but wasn’t winning, so he burned a few holes in punters pockets. Trialled pretty well at Cranbourne and 1600m fresh tells me he’s forward enough.
Race 3. (14:05) Fulmen Park (bm78) 1400m
7 Neighbourhood (Bet Now: $2.70 TOP ODDS) looks a smart mare and confident she can continue her winning ways. Resumed over 1200m at the midweeks at Sandown when back in the run off a moderate speed before peeling wider and unleashing a brilliant finale to score a big win, an impressive win, running some of the best late splits of the meeting. Up to 1400m, upside, stable looks set for a big few weeks…happy to be in her corner.
Fitter and up to 1400m are two big ticks for the Greg Eurell trained mare 4 Great Duchess (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS), who resumed over 1200m at Ballarat two weeks ago and despite that trip being short of her best, liked the way she found the line late in the piece behind Tahitian Dancer. Up to 1400m is ideal, has upside and form from last prep does read well.
3 Tranquil Miss (Bet Now: $51.00 TOP ODDS) is a Churchill Downs mare for George Doderico that resumes, having not raced since Feb 2 over 2000m at Caulfield when at the end of a long prep and battling away really well in defeat when third to Lamborghini. Can sprint well fresh and didn’t mind the way she went in a recent Moe jumpout behind Snitzkraft.
Race 4. (14:40) Iron Jack Aust. Lagers (bm78) 2000m
Pretty keen here on 13 Lynch Mob (Bet Now: $4.60 TOP ODDS) for the McEvoy team. This guy ran over 1800m last Wednesday at Sandown on a day where those out wide and back had no chance, but he produced a brilliant run from the back to run a close up fourth to Aussie Nugget. Against the pattern, he was outstanding, and he’ll eat up 2000m.
Remaining at 2000m is the niggle with 4 Rockarral (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS), but he does have a touch of quality about his and the first up run at the Valley was quite good I thought behind Arctic Shock after getting back in the run and not sure he was 100% happy on the tight track. Should love the spacious surroundings of Pakenham and gets in well after the claim for young Kersley.
12 Annunciate (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) has to be regarded as one of the leading chances here. This guy had been racing really well for the Hyland team without winning but that all changed over 2040m at the Valley last time when producing a sustained run from off the pace and was simply too good for his rivals. Think this race is a touch harder but now has that winning feeling.
Race 5. (15:20) Hanson Hcp 1600m
I reckon Michael Jones has 5 Torgersen (Bet Now: $13.00) flying and I think he can run a big race here at odds. His two runs for the new stable have been excellent. Was good first up at Ararat in the China Bowl behind Marcel From Madrid before going to the Kilmore Cup where the tempo was against him, but loved the way he found the line. Ran second in this race last year and drops several kilos.
1 Odeon (Bet Now: $2.80) is the class runner of the field and will take some beating here I suspect. Resumed in the Kevin Heffernan when a noted drifter in betting after a good trial and just looked in need of the run behind Teleplay, and that form was well and truly ticked off last Saturday via Hey Doc in the Group l Winterbottom. Gets the claim, maps well, fitter, up to the mile…hard to beat.
9 Brown Ben (Bet Now: $6.50) is a tough customer for the McEvoy camp who is another that comes through the Kilmore Cup where he was a little unlucky and could make a case that he should have won. Just got held up for a stride or two when building the revs before getting clear and surging hard late to run a close up fourth. He’ll run well here I think.
Race 6. (16:00) David Bourke Mem Hcp 1200m
I’ll take a punt on 4 Choisborder (Bet Now: $9.50), a former Darren Weir galloper that is having his first run for the Maher/Eustace team. This guy hasn’t raced in nearly a year since contesting the Gold Bullion at Pakenham when slow to recover and pulling up lame behind Amadeus. His best is clearly good enough and looked pretty good in a recent Terang jumpout, and in a piece of work at the Valley, but market will be the guide.
6 More Than Exceed (Bet Now: $4.20) is a month between runs for the Stokes team after racing down the Flemington straight on Cup Day when near the speed and trying hard but couldn’t go with them late when down the track behind Tactical Advantage. Like that he’s been freshened up and hopefully can get cover from a tricky gate.
1 Snitzkraft (Bet Now: $8.50) is a son of Snitzel for the Stokes camp that resumes. He hasn’t raced since the Hareeba at Mornignton back in March when just off the speed and trying hard but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Streets Of Avalon. Been given a long break but was given a good hitout in a recent Moe jumpout win, and he does have class.
Race 7. (16:40) Pakenham Cup 2500m
Weight relief and back in depth/class looks a good recipe for 4 Chapada (Bet Now: $6.00). Three weeks between runs for the Michael Moroney camp since contesting the Zipping Classic where he wasn’t really suited at WFA but toughed it out strongly, only to be bloused late by Southern France. That form clearly reads well for this, back to a handicap..he appeals.
There is a bit of timing about 8 Secret Blaze (Bet Now: $2.30) for the in form McEvoy stable. He was a month between runs when racing last Saturday at the Valley when wide and doing work. He was entitled to be run down but kept finding under pressure and was too good for Rupture. Has won up to 2400m, so 2500m should be fine and has upside.
9 Creedence (Bet Now: $7.50) is the hard fit/in form horse that I think can run well despite the class/depth rise. He comes here off the back of a win over 2600m at Ballarat two weeks ago when given a lovely ride by Williams and was able to just prevail over an in form Defibrillate. I like the booking of Cory Paris given he’s a strong left hand whip rider and this horse does tend to lay in under pressure.
Race 8. (17:20) Vobis Gold Bullion 1400m
I think 4 Yulong January (Bet Now: $4.00) can continue his winning ways. The Maher/Eustace trained four year old got back into the winners list over 1400m at Ballarat two weeks ago when leading all the way and bolting up, admittedly getting a good time of it in front. Harder here, but has the right racing pattern and has upside left given he’s only third up here.
Class will carry 1 Widgee Turf (Bet Now: $4.00) a long way here but just not sure where he is at. Thought he had every chance two back in the VOBIS Gold Star behind Iconoclasm before going to the Sandown Stakes when pulling up lame behind Gold Fields. These VOBIS races are his bread and butter and this is a very winnable race if he brings his best.
2 Ken’s Dream (Bet Now: $12.00) could be a sneaky chance here, especially from a good gate. He ran over 1400m at Flemington four weeks ago when left flat footed when the sprint went on but picked up and was okay late behind Reykjavik. Can sit near the speed from the good draw and at his best, he’s certainly capable of beating these.
Race 9. (17:55) Kangaroo Race (bm78) 1000m
I think will be the guide here for 3 Wise Hero (Bet Now: $9.00) because if he remains solid in betting, or better yet, is well backed, then jump on. I think John Price has him flying if his jumpout win last week was any guide. Admittedly, didn’t beat much, but loved the way he went in winning and looked to have plenty up the sleeve. I’ll take a chance with him.
Bigger track and fitter, 12 Propelle (Bet Now: $3.30) is worth another chance. The Ellerton/Zahra stable trains this talented mare, who resumed over 955m at the Valley where she was a notable drifter in betting and the market got it right as she didn’t really ping for that sort of race when fourth to Bold Star. Like her at 1000m on the big track, and with the lone straight, she can wind up and take this out.
Very interested to see how 7 Ben Hercules (Bet Now: $9.00) goes, who resumes for the Hayes/Dabernig stable. This bloke is having his first run as a four year old and the stable in recent weeks has been flying with their first up runners. Loved the way he went in a recent Bendigo jumpout, beating stablemate Matador, who came out and won first up at Sandown.
