The Parks track at Morphettville will play host to an eight race card this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres from the 1000m-Winning Post; Out six metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:41) Schweppes Hcp (c1) 1550m
He’s still a maiden but I think 3 Cleary Adonis (Bet Now: $1.65) can win race one here. He’s flying for John Hyam but just can’t quite crack it for a win. Ran over the mile on the course proper last Saturday where he loomed to beat the well performed Holy Dancer and hit the front, but that horse kicked back and edged him out on the line. This is a very winnable race.
5 Centre Scoota (Bet Now: $6.50) has been slightly disappointing at his past two, but off the form prior, I think he’s in this. Perhaps, he’s been ridden just that touch too close to the speed and hasn’t been able to finish off like he’s done previously. He’s a bit hard to trust, like most engaged here, but stable is having a good run at the moment.
1 Near Magic (Bet Now: $9.00) is the unknown. Took start 15 to break the maiden tag at Strathalbyn and despite starting $26, gee he was impressive in leading throughout under Fawke and was going clear near the line in a dominant display. If you can trust that and think it’ll be repeated, he likely wins, but want to see him do it again.
Race 2. (14:16) S Longbottom's 65th Bday (rs2ly) 1400m
5 Flop (Bet Now: $7.00) is flying for Gordon Richards. She ran at this track/distance two weeks ago where I was really keen on her and while she didn’t win, she still ran very well given the leader, Morvada, got an absolute picnic in front and had it too good on speed, kicking on strongly to win. Confident that Flop can go one better here, hopefully off a more genuine tempo.
6 Crockett (Bet Now: $3.80) is racing pretty good this time in for the McEvoy camp. Won his first two starts for the prep, the second win coming at Mount Gambier, before racing at this track/distance two weeks when hard in the market and while on face value, it was just an okay run, the tempo was clearly against him, so the run had merit to it. Hard to beat here I think.
3 Tatoosh (Bet Now: $4.20) is just beautifully in here and any hint of his best would see him take this out. The knock with him is that it’s been a little while since he has won, but his effort last Saturday in the City Of Marion was quite good from the back to finish just over two lengths away from Benz. Like him up to 1400m and drops a fair bit in depth.
Race 3. (14:51) Dominant (rs2ly) 1000m
The race sets up for 5 Starvirgo (Bet Now: $3.10) to swoop on these. Anthony Freedman trains this gelding, who comes through what looked a pretty decent 955m race at the Valley and liked the way he found the line late in the piece behind the Stakes performed All Cylinders. Bigger track and up to 1000m with Vorster, sitting off a fast speed, he’s the one for me.
3 Miss Labelle (Bet Now: $3.40) is a Jon O’Connor trained mare that is just about in career best form at the moment. This mare has won two of her past three, the last start seeing her win four weeks ago over this track/distance when leading, copping pressure yet found plenty under pressure and was too good. She’s effective with fresh legs and overall, this race isn’t strong.
4 I Am Incredible (Bet Now: $6.50) is a huge watch here. Formerly with Matty Seyers, this veteran sprinter is now with Will Clarken and we know the record this guy has with tried horses. Can he improve a six year old who hasn’t won in some 470 days? Time will tell, but he has the ability so I’d be watching the market and seeing what it does with him.
Race 4. (15:31) Holdfast Insurance (bm64) 1000m
I think 7 Little Rich Boy (Bet Now: $5.50) is worthy of another chance. He was very good first up down the Flemington straight on Cup Day before racing at this track/distance three weeks ago when part of a mad speed battle, then wanted to hang on the turn and dropped out late to run late. He’s better than that and off the fresh run, he’s in the mix for sure.
5 Taken Off (Bet Now: $2.80) is four weeks between runs for Phillip Stokes since racing over 1050m on the course proper here when doing work in the run but despite burning petrol tickets out wide, he surged and loomed to win but couldn’t finish it off when fourth to Nasifa. Drops a bit in depth here and should get a better run this time around.
3 Vahana (Bet Now: $6.50) is the huge query here. Karen Byrnes trains this mare, who hasn’t raced in over 12 months since getting the job done at Clare in a race where the form hasn’t been that great, but she’s got early toe and should hold a good spot from the inside gate. Market will be the guide as to how forward she is, so watch it the last 10-15 minutes before jump time.
Race 5. (16:11) Aami (bm75) 1250m
I’m going the way of 4 Enough Swagger (Bet Now: $1.80), a mare who is in a real purple patch at the moment. Looked a good thing on paper when racing at this track/distance two weeks ago and under a confident steer from Stubby, the mare was just far too good for her rivals. Now she has that win on the board, think she can win again in a suitable race.
3 Call Me Curtis (Bet Now: $8.00) was the subject of good support when racing over 1250m on the Parks track three weeks ago where he attempted to lead all the way and for mine, I thought Gary Lo gave him every chance in front, getting a cheap furlong or two, but was no match for Nasifa. Off that, not sure he wins, but he’s a good chance to run top three once again.
Back to 1250m isn’t exactly ideal for 6 Bolt I Am (Bet Now: $7.50) but he’s a handy horse who can threaten here. He ran over 1350m at Strathalbyn last time out when back on the fence and held up, with plenty to offer. Got out late and worked to the line strongly to run fourth to the above average Aiguilette. That form reads okay for this. Just wants the speed on.
Race 6. (16:51) E Grantham's 21st B'day (bm70) 1950m
I think 4 Disco Rebel (Bet Now: $7.00) is a good each way bet here. This mare is trained by Sue Jaensch and being third up, she should just about be at peak fitness. Ran over 1550m here two weeks ago, a trip short of her best, and she was never really a winning threat, but didn’t mind the way she finished her race off behind Enki. Up to 1900m is a big tick. Just hope she can sit a touch closer in the run and love the booking of Vorster.
I think 2 Star Status (Bet Now: $2.40) deserves another chance. This Macdonald/Gluyas trained four year old ran over 1950m on the Parks track three weeks back and on face value, I thought he was just fair behind Ritratto, but he led and I’m not sure leading is his go in life, so I think with a more conservative steer this time around, he can run a much improved race.
3 Set To Cruise (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Mick Huxtable trained mare that has been pretty solid this time in. She last raced in the Clare Cup a couple of Sundays back when just off the speed and looked to be in a good spot, but when the sprint went on, she couldn’t go with them and was very disappointing. Bigger track and a more genuine tempo, she can improve.
Race 7. (17:31) Tab (bm64) 1400m
4 Master Chum (Bet Now: $11.00) is going well I reckon for Rob Wilkinson. This gelding was a real eye catcher first up behind Nasifa on Cup Day before running behind that mare again three weeks ago on the Parks track and I liked the way he found the line off a moderate speed. He’s flying I think and if he can sit a bit closer in the run he’s hard to beat.
5 Cazabillie (Bet Now: $2.15) is a Will Clarken trained mare who was working up to win after a couple of solid runs back from a break, but I don’t think many expected her to spank her rivals over the this track/distance two weeks ago. In saying that, she was well backed and once money comes for a Clarken horse, more often than not they go close to winning. Can she repeat the dose?
Not sure she wins, but I’d be keeping tabs on the Travis Doudle trained 7 Star Patriot (Bet Now: $23.00), who is first up. This mare is better suited with racing under the belt but she does have talent when at her best so interesting to see how she goes. 1400m fresh I’d say no, but she looked forward enough in a recent jumpout here to suggest she could run a cheeky race first up.
Race 8. (18:10) Twilight Races 20/12 (bm70) 1400m
9 Belzella (Bet Now: $2.70) for me in the get out. This McEvoy trained mare comes back to town off the back of a spank job of her rivals at Balaklava last time out when sitting just off the speed before getting clear air and the turn of foot was very sharp as she put them away and won with ease. More to come I suspect and hopefully sits back and swamps them.
8 Cosmic Award (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Travis Doudle trained mare who has been very good at her past couple, winning her last two, each coming at Strathalbyn, winning over 1100m two back before stepping up to 1350m and was dominant after sitting just off the speed. Hardest test to date here, but she’s flying and has earned a shot in town.
Up to 1400m looks idea for the David Jolly trained 10 She’s Never Late (Bet Now: $5.50). She was kept relatively safe in betting when resuming over 1250m here two weeks ago when off the pace before Vorster tried to weave his magic wand and he did to an extent, but was no match for Enough Swagger. Like her up to 1400m and she generally improves with the run under the belt.
