A bumper ten race program has been assembled for Bunbury this Saturday where it is Bunbury Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (15:12) MCCAFÉ SOUTH WEST MDN 1200m
9 Looksnoteverything (Bet Now: $9.00) has the A1 form for this maiden. You go back through her last four runs, the horses that have won are above average, including several Bob Peters runners that are heading towards Stakes company, if not already there, so the form around her reads very well, draws soft and with the claim, clearly the one to beat.
2 Jono (Bet Now: $9.50) is third up and should just about be at peak fitness. He comes through a maiden won by Real Charisma, where Looksnoteverything placed. Jono was near the speed and battled on okay but tired late to run fifth. He’s got the right racing pattern to give himself every chance and I dare say Parnham will be positive from the gate.
6 Cotchin (Bet Now: $13.00) can be an improver here. Both career outings have come here, placing on debut behind Western Empire (Looksnoteverything second). He then raced at this trip when wide no cover and feeling the pinch at the end. Draws much better. Just depends what upside is left.
Race 2. (15:52) SUMMIT REALTY SOUTH WEST HCP 1200m
Has to lump the big weight but in the corner of 1 Ladies Of London (Bet Now: $2.35) for Lindsey Smith. This mare has been given a mini freshen up, having not raced since January 30 when launching late from just off the speed, just missing out on the win when a narrow second to Time To Sizzle. Depth here is nowhere near as strong and should get run of the race from the draw.
4 City Circle (Bet Now: $4.50) is over a year between wins but think Neville Parnham has her going well. She ran over 1100m at Ascot two weeks ago when getting a beaut run in transit just off the speed. Brown eased her wider and for a few strides, she looked the winner, but was nabbed late by Cuballing. Think that form reads okay for a race like this.
9 Mini Winnie (Bet Now: $16.00) tends to save his best for Bunbury and can be an improver here at odds. He ran over a month ago at Pinjarra when far from disgraced in defeat behind the in form Scooter’s Machine, beaten just under four lengths. Fresh legs on a track he likes, could sneak into the first four.
Race 3. (16:32) CAPEL VALE WINERY HCP 1200m
I’m with 9 Secret Plan (Bet Now: $4.80). Team Williams trained three year old that resumed over 1000m at the midweeks at Ascot. He was a heavily backed odds on pop and on face value, he was ordinary when third in a field of seven, but considering the winner has gone around 34 last 600m, those from off the speed really had no chance, including this guy. Better suited here and can take this out.
3 Vadette De Star (Bet Now: $2.25) looks an exciting prospect for Simon Miller. Debuted in a 3YO open race two weeks ago at Ascot and produced one of the wins of the meeting, charging home from last to get up and beat a pretty handy three year old in Charleton Eddie. Natural improvement off that, has to be hard to beat here.
Good test here for 1 Hot Zed (Bet Now: $12.00) but hard to knock the way he is racing at the moment, winning three on the bounce. His last couple of wins haven’t been by big margins but what I’ve liked is the way he has found under pressure and fended them off. Not sure he wins, but a must for multiples.
Race 4. (17:08) MGIB HCP 1000m
5 Excellent Dream (Bet Now: $2.90) looks the map horse. Lindsey Smith trained gelding that has won his past two, the latest coming over 1200m at Ascot back on January 30 when parking off the speed before Harvey eased him to clear air and he surged hard late to win. Fast run 1000m with fresh legs looks an ideal recipe.
Very interesting set up for 1 Gemma’s Son (Bet Now: $3.30). I’m assuming back to 1000m with a 3kg apprentice, the signs are there to say it’s going to be handle bars down from the outset. He ran over 1300m in the Pinjarra Classic last time and just went way too keen in the run. Jump and run here is my guess, and that will see him prove hard to beat.
3 Plutocracy (Bet Now: $6.00) rises a bit in depth but Simon Miller has him going well. Ran last Saturday at Ascot over 1000m when back, wide with cover, before launching late and finishing over the top for an impressive win. Harder here, but does no work from the gate and should be strong at the end.
Race 5. (17:45) WILLIAM BARRETT & SONS VASE 1200m
The key to 4 Bogart (Bet Now: $8.50) looks to be fresh legs so I like he has had five weeks off since his resumption, which resulted in a big win at Pinjarra with 60kg, with Pike really lifting him over the concluding stages. All three career wins have come first up, so fresh legs is his go and with weight relief, is hard to beat.
1 Crystal Spirit (Bet Now: $8.00) is a talented son of Bel Esprit for the Gangemi camp that resumes. This gelding hasn’t raced since September 12 at Belmont when disappointing behind Why Choose Her after seemingly getting every chance behind the speed. He can sprint well fresh and has trialled nicely in readiness.
10 Scooter’s Machine (Bet Now: $9.50) rises a fair bit in grade/depth but hard to knock the way he is racing at the moment, winning two on the bounce. Latest win came last Wednesday at Ascot when wide no cover for the trip but he was too good. With a light weight, he’ll put himself on speed and run a bold race.
Race 6. (18:20) SOUTH WEST BREEDERS' CLASSIC 1400m
It’s hard seeing anything other than a win for 2 Magical Dream (Bet Now: $6.50). This is a filly I would have backed to win a Kingston Town but unfortunately she didn’t gain a start. Instead was freshened up and ran at Ascot over 1200m back on Jan 16 where she produced some of the better late splits of the meeting in winning. She’s destined for better races, better than this, so I’m really keen on her.
1 Kissonallforcheeks (Bet Now: $2.15) is the key and perhaps only real threat to Magical Dream. Heavily backed when racing three weeks ago in the Challenge at Ascot when wide no cover for the trip yet kept finding the line and was really good in defeat I thought behind Solaia. Tricky draw to overcome, but has class and hard race fitness.
Up to 1400m is the query with 5 Island Charm (Bet Now: $15.00) but she is hard fit and racing well for Roy Rogers. Found the class of Gemma’s Son a bit much two back in the 3YO Magic Millions before going back to 1000m where she was back in the run and worked home okay without threatening. 1400m is the query, but have to respect an astute stable.
Race 7. (18:57) CITY & REGIONAL FUELS HCP 1400m
Now that 9 Amelia’s Contraire (Bet Now: $4.40) has won a race, I think she can go right on with it now. Big win from her last Saturday at Ascot. Back near last in the run before peeling very wide but unleashed a powerful finale to get up over the top of them. Gets a suck run from the gate and Harvey sticks.
8 Wild Fusion (Bet Now: $12.00) is a real model of consistency for Liam O’Loughlin. His last run came on Feb 14 at Albany where he was ridden quite negatively out the back and found the line strongly without really being a winning threat when third to Read The Riot Act. Proven city performer that is suited back up in distance.
A rise in trip will definitely suit 5 Dark Mission (Bet Now: $16.00). She was seven weeks between runs and was 1600m back to 1100m when racing at Ascot two weeks ago. She was off what looked a reasonable speed but just found them too sharp over the short course. Better suited here and can run a much improved race.
Race 8. (19:35) BUNBURY STAKES 1400m
Good race this with a host of chances. The safe option appears to be 14 Son Of A God (Bet Now: $3.30) for Simon Miller. He was a month between runs when contesting the Pinjarra Classic. Had the right run in transit and was there to win. Perhaps the break between runs just told late. Chris Parnham jumps back on, draws soft and 1400m should be okay.
He’s a beauty 4 Last Of The Line (Bet Now: $3.70) and back to 1400m should be no issue for him. I say that because he was strong late when winning the Detonator (1800m) two weeks ago at Ascot. Wide with cover and a bit keen in the run but he was too good for them. Remains down in the weights, with upside and think he’s the one to beat.
13 Serenity Bay (Bet Now: $18.00) should appreciate the rise to 1400m. She resumed in the Pinjarra Classic and was okay late without threatening, with the market drift suggesting she would need the run. Interesting that Parnham jumps off to ride Son Of A God, whether that’s a lead or not, but this mare is quite capable.
Race 9. (20:10) BUNBURY CUP 2000m
1 Trap For Fools (Bet Now: $7.00) can bounce back in a big way here. He resumed in the Detonator and just did far too much work on speed, which ensured he was a tired pony in the straight when midfield behind Last Of The Line. He is the clear class runner of the field and with a softer time of it on speed, he’ll take running down.
7 Montelena (Bet Now: $1.70) is third up and should just about be at peak fitness. Sat wide with cover in the Detonator and surged hard late, just missing out on picking up Last Of The Line. Pulled up with heat stress as well so there was a genuine excuse. Gets run of the race from the draw and will take holding out late.
2 Bella’s Idol (Bet Now: $27.00) lacks the class of some of these but he gets some much needed weight relief and is a proven performer at this track. Be forgiving of his run at Ascot two weeks ago. Had to carry 60.5kg and that just told on him late behind Saucy Jack. He’s racing well and is a first four threat.
Race 10. (20:44) TABTOUCH - BETTER YOUR BET HCP 2000m
Bob Peters wins the race and I dare he runs 1-2 with his two fillies that are heading towards the Oaks. I’m with 11 Reliable Star (Bet Now: $4.50) though. Was on her back last Saturday at Ascot and I reckon had she got a clear run in the straight for its entirety, she wins instead of a close up second. She’ll love 2000m and was 1200m to 1800m last weekend so you’d like to think there is room for improvement.
9 Antique Jewel (Bet Now: $5.00) is the interesting runner. Odds on pop when racing in a 1400m maiden last Wednesday at Ascot. Wasn’t the most impressive of wins, but what I liked is how strong she was to the line, looking like a filly that will eat up more ground. She gets that straight away and is in the right camp.
6 Born To Try (Bet Now: $4.80) is heading in the right direction for Lindsey Smith. Four year old mare that steps up in trip after a strong win over the mile last time out at Ascot, sitting off the pace and finishing best. Yet to prove herself beyond the mile but off last time, the 2000m should be no issue.
