Group l racing for the 2021 calendar year kicks off this Saturday at Caulfield where it is CF Orr Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Good little test here for 7 Regardsmaree (Bet Now: $2.00 TOP ODDS) but it was hard not to be impressed by his win here on Australia Day. Sat wide with cover before McLeod eased him wider and he put the race to bed in a few strides to win and win well. Relative times were ordinary but that was due to a very slow early tempo, so keen to see how he goes.

The query runner is clearly 1 Mystery Shot (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS). He was just too bad to be true when resuming down the straight at Flemington. He was beaten 400m out and ran tailed off last, beaten just under ten lengths. He is clearly a better horse than that, and he gets to a track/distance he loves.

9 Imperial Lad (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) has come back in good order for John Moloney and down in the weights on speed, he’ll give a bit of cheek. Set a solid tempo at Sandown two weeks ago and battled away pretty well when third to Second Slip. The claim seems him right down in the weights and he’s got the right racing pattern.

5 Arcaded (Bet Now: $3.10 TOP ODDS) looks a decent prospect for the Godolphin team and James Cummings. Had good specking at odds when debuting at this track/distance at the midweeks and she led throughout to spank her rivals in impressive fashion. The eye said it was good and the clock agreed. Hard to beat against these.

3 Tayla’s Moment (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) is a daughter of Shalaa for the Ellerton/Zahra camp that comes through the Preview where she got back off the speed and worked home strongly late when second to all the way winner Dosh. Off that effort, 1100m should be ideal and is one of the leading contenders.

9 Lady Audrey (Bet Now: $16.00 TOP ODDS) is a Michael Moroney trained filly that was hard in the market when she had start one at this track/distance. Sat outside Arcaded and looked to travel well but when she was asked to go, she did respond, but just had no answers for Arcaded. Doubt she turns the tables but runs well regardless.

4 Construct (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is a Team Snowden trained colt that resumes. Hasn’t raced since his debut in the Breeders Plate when a closing second to subsequent Magic Millions winner Shaquero. How strong is that form? Have to wait and see, but thought his recent Gosford trial was more than encouraging.

3 Extreme Warrior (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is a key threat. Talented colt that resumed in the Preview and Mick Price, as is the case the majority of the time pre race, was honest in how he thought the horse would go and said that he would need the run. That’s how it panned out, but it was still an excellent return when a close up second. Fitter, up in trip, very likeable.

6 Marine One (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) is the one to watch most I think from a Blue Diamond perspective because he is screaming of a horse wanting 1200m. That was the case fresh in the Preview. Took a while to get into his work but his last bit was very encouraging. If they overdo it in front, he can finish over the top.

Just leaning the way of 2 Amish Boy (Bet Now: $3.70 TOP ODDS) with race fitness and class. Comes through a strong form race fresh behind All Time Legend, pulling up with excuses post race. They then rode him cold in the Magic Millions Guineas and worked home strongly when second to Aim. That form reads well, hard fit…looks one of the hardest to beat.

9 I’m Thunderstruck (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) looks a quality animal for the Price/Kent team. Jumped out like a jet prior to debuting here in a maiden when backed with real confidence. Did a bit wrong in the straight but knuckled down strongly to get up in the last couple of strides. He’ll eat up the 1400m and I think can measure up.

3 Young Werther (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is back and I think he can resume a winner for Danny O’Brien. Had a three run Spring prep to start his career and was really impressive despite just a lone win. That came on debut in a Ballarat maiden but second start, should have won, before a four week break into the Derby where he ran a credible third to Johnny Get Angry. He’s got quality and will be charging at them late.

10 Pinkham (Bet Now: $2.40) looks a pretty good filly and appears wound up for this. Price/Kent trained filly that hasn’t raced since her debut at Seymour back in June when heavily backed and despite sitting four and five wide no cover, she spanked them and ran sizzling time. Caulfield jumpout was followed by a really strong hitout in winning a Geelong trial, so fitness levels won’t be an issue and if she can get on speed without doing too much work, I think she’ll take some running down.

1 La Mexicana (Bet Now: $3.00) is a key threat for me. Team Freedman trained filly that did a great job in the Spring, winning the Crockett on Cox Plate Day. Spelled and resumed over 1100m here against the older horses where she got a beaut run behind the speed before getting an inside split and her class came to the fore. Fitter and up to 1200m, hard to beat.

7 Highly Discreet (Bet Now: $17.00) is a daughter of Street Boss for the Phillip Stokes yard that is first up and I think she is more than capable of winning this. Last raced in the Spring when a solid fourth in the Twilight Glow behind Hindaam. Trialled well enough at Geelong and her best efforts on paper have come first up.

Going with 2 Nonconformist (Bet Now: $4.80), resuming for Grahame Begg. Is first up, having not raced since the Cantala Mile when good in defeat in a very fast run race won by Yulong Prince. He loves Caulfield, he sprints well fresh and closed off very nicely in his Geelong trial when second to Sir Dragonet. Just needs to hold up from the gate.

3 Night’s Watch (Bet Now: $14.00) is an enigma but I reckon Archie Alexander has him humming along beautifully. Two runs in December for the stable were very good, first up at Pakenham behind Tavidance before close up in the Lord Stakes, both races run as barrier trials. His actual trial at Geelong behind Sir Dragonet was very good and I think he’s ready to rock and roll.

6 Best Of Days (Bet Now: $4.20) has been a really solid horse throughout the Sydney Summer and has to command some level of respect. He hasn’t raced since Boxing Day when a game second to Spirit Ridge in the Summer Cup in what was a real sit/sprint. Tick over trial was solid and has race fitness.

First look at this race, I thought it was a tough one to sort out, but finishing the form for it, I’m really keen on 3 Sierra Sue (Bet Now: $5.00). I can’t see much early speed engaged here, and we know that this girl can lead throughout if they want to, so I hope they’re positive from the outset. They rode her forward in her slick Cranbourne jumpout win, so if that does eventuate here, I think she’ll be too nippy for them.

7 Lashes (Bet Now: $13.00) does seem to race best with fresh legs so three weeks between runs I do like. That last run came at Rosehill when off the speed and chasing strongly late when second to Tailleur. Stable have a good record when bringing them to Melbourne and sitting just off the speed, she’ll be strong at the end.

Great to see 2 Mamzelle Tess (Bet Now: $31.00) back at the races. Quality mare for the Corstens camp that is first up, having not raced since April 18 when close up in the VOBIS Gold Mile at Caulfield behind So Si Bon. Has trialled up well in readiness for her return and does have quality about her.

Some betting agencies put up $3.50+ for 2 Sir Dragonet (Bet Now: $2.80) to win this…that was nearing on silly stuff. He only has to be half fit to beat this lot up. He’s the reigning Cox Plate winner that is taking on, for the most part, Group ll/Group lll class horses. On class, his main threat is Fifty Stars, but he gets better as the prep goes on, and Sir Dragonet just looked outstanding in his trial win. Anything over $2 is a bet for me. I think he should be odds on.

5 Streets Of Avalon (Bet Now: $7.50) has been a grand campaigner for a number of seasons and does save his best for 1400m. Though, he was pretty sharp in winning fresh over 1200m at the Valley in the Australia Stakes. Once he landed outside Tavisan and that pair controlled, it was race over and the class of this guy came to the fore. He’ll put himself on speed and give his all.

Connections are hoping to secure an All Star Mile spot with 9 Sovereign Award (Bet Now: $11.00) so i am keen to see how she resumes. This mare really came of age in the Spring, graduating from a midweek class horse to being a multiple Stakes winner in the Spring. Trucked up nicely in her Geelong trial and can sprint well fresh.

Think a fast run 1100m will be ideal for the James Cummings trained 1 Viridine (Bet Now: $4.20). He ran in the Australia Stakes last start where he was sitting back off a very slow speed and that set up just didn’t suit him when second to Streets Of Avalon. Good record at Caulfield, sits off a more genuine tempo, like him here.

8 Causeway Girl (Bet Now: $21.00) is bursting to win a Stakes race. Clinton McDonald has done a great job with this mare but she just can’t quite crack it for a blacktype success. Looked like it would come here last start in the WJ Adams but just missed out on picking up All Banter. Hard fit and racing well, hard to beat.

10 Sword Of Mercy (Bet Now: $7.00) is hard fit and racing well for the Ellerton/Zahra team. She ran in the Kensington three weeks back at Flemington when near Fabergino and tried to go with her, but the WA speed demon was just too good for them. This girl is flying and is hard to beat I feel.

BEST BET: Race Eight Number 2 Sir Dragonet

NEXT BEST: Race Seven Number 3 Sierra Sue

LONG SHOT: Race Three Number 4 Construct
